(I know you actually specifically meant Alan and he ISN'T trans, but) the upward lilt while speaking is a female thing and they actually sometimes teach it in "voice training" for trans people. Because trans people are already the gender they identify as they tend to do it anyway, but generally men will keep the same tone throughout a sentence whereas women with raise their voice toward the end a little in an upward lilt (kind of like everything sounds like a question)
