A penny, a nickel and a dime add up to 16¢, so if we divide that amount into 240¢, we get 15, the answer.

15 but I don’t know if there’s a better way to do it. I added 1+5+10 and determined that 16 would be the total if only one of each coin was used. Then I divided 240 by 16.

Just started guessing. Had to be in increments of 5 or 10. 10 each was to little, 20 each was too much, so 15.

Figure it out in cents. Total of 240 cents. Since you want to use the same number of each coin let N equal the number of each coin. But in order for the total number of cents using the same nunber of each of three different coin denominations to be the result of the equation we are building, it will need to be expressed as the sum of the cents represented by the three coin denominations multiplied by the number of each of those coins that is used So: (1+5+10)×N=240 16N=240 N=15 Therefore you need 15 pennies, 15 nickels, and 15 dimes to make $2.40. This is actually only solvable to a single result because the number of each coin is the same. If you had different amounts of the different coins then you would be left with an equation with more than one unknown.

I did the same thing without the decimal point; instead of $2.50, I was using 250 cents. For me, it made the whole thing a little bit easier.

15? My reasoning is X would be the quantity and would be the same for pennies, nickels, and dimes. So the value of each group would be the value of an individual coin times how many (which is X). 1X + 5X + 10X = 240. 16X=240. X=240/16. X=15. ..... Yay!

Greetings. The answer is, each coin is, 15. Now, we will determine the value of each coin as follows. Let us assume that the different coins are represented by the letters X, Y, and Z for 1 cent, 5 cents, and 10 cents respectively. Now, we will add the values to get X+5Y+10Z=240. We are told that the different denominations must be equal. Therefore, X=Y=Z and X+5X+10X=240. That is 16X=240, and X=240/16 =15. Each coin numbers 15. 15×.01= $0.15 15×.05= 0.75 15×.10= 1.50 Total = $2.40

I would suggest that it is simpler and less scary to work in cents, rather than dollars, especially as each coin is valued at less than a dollar. That way, you are not using decimals.

Prior to watching this: A penny is 1, nickel is 5 and dime is 10 (I assume, I'm English). Add these three together to get 16. Divide this number into 240 gives you 15. So, 15 of each coin or 45 coins in all.

Here in Australia, we do not have pennies, nickels or dimes. Therefore, I assumed that a penny is 1 cent, a nickel is 5 cents, and a dime is 10 cents. That being the case, the number of each coin is 15. Let x be the number of coins, then, 1x plus 5x plus 10x = 16x. Therefore, 16x = 240 (cents). Therefore, x =15. To prove it, 15 pennies (15 cents) plus 15 nickels (75 cents) plus 15 dimes ($1.50) equals $2.40. I am writing this before John gives us a solution.

As in UK, 1 penny = 1 cent = 1/100th of the main monetary unit (one dollar ($) in USA, like one pound (£) in UK) One nickel, or 5¢, is 5 hundredths (5/100) of the main monetary unit One dime, or 10¢, is 10 hundredths (10/100) of the main monetary unit So, 0.01x [pennies] + 0.05x [nickels] + 0.10x [dimes] = $2.40 0.16x = 2.40 0.16x/0.16 = 2.40/0.16 [divide both sides by 0.16] x = 15 Thus, Bob needs 15 each of pennies, nickels & dimes to get $2.40
