Feeling incredibly grateful for a life where music and magic are everywhere! Bobby and Phil had so much fun celebrating the 40th anniversary of Terrapin Station at LOCKN' that they decided to embark on their first-ever duo tour!
Director/Producer: Jonathan Healey

This was one of the best nights of my life, especially this moment. My dad introduced me to the Dead since I unfortunately missed the bus, and he was with me there for this show. We both cried hearing Bob sing this. Dad cried cause of how much the song meant to him, and I cried cause of how much my dad introducing me to this incredible band and family meant to me. Scanning that crowd there were a lot of teary-eyed heads, it was pure magic. But after all "...statements just seem vain at last..."

That lyric is part of Hunter's "Jack O' Roses", a song from Part 2 of Hunter's "Terrapin Station Suite" (the Grateful Dead LP has Part 1, including "At A Siding" which the Dead never performed live but which is included in the performance on this video). Grahame Lesh has reworked Hunter's version with original music and some lyrics. It is beautiful. Phil Lesh & Friends, with Grahame, busted it back out twice this summer, including Portland Maine July 10, out of "Terrapin" (but without "At A Siding").

Lockn is a magical place- went twice in 2014 and 2018. One of the best places I ever experienced and I'm old and have been to a lot of places. The atmosphere and good feelings there are hard to describe and the music is like this piece I'm listening to now. Hope we can have it again like in the past. Also the whole weekend has been web casted for free for those who don't make it to Virginia.

@@hashburystumble8808 Jack O"Roses is played here the way Phil plays it with the music that Brian Lesh wrote. To my ear, it sounds like Across the Universe by the Beatles. Robert Hunter's Jack O'Roses album has the version I prefer, where the lyrics are set to Jerry's music, as god intended.

I have had the very same experiences with my daughter...she paid a $1000 for a ticket to the July 4 show in Chicago in 2015...my wife then forced me to go...which destroyed a wall that had kept me, now us, from enjoying this live music venue in so many ways with so many great cover bands...and to see the guys staying true to their hearts and taking the music to a new generation...priceless...and humbling!

Last time I seem to remember Jerry sing this was Soldier Field in 1995. In December of 2002 Phil sang as "The Dead" played and that really was etched into memory forever the way he enunciated the lyrics made it seem different and I think they played it at Alpine Valley the previous summer but that is fuzzy now but was a great weekend. I don't really know when Bobby took over the lyrics but this sounds great. I've always loved the song but sometimes I was disappointed but not from the way it was played but because I knew it isn't very jazzy and often placed so you knew that there were no detours but head first into drums without much of a transition but I'm still not or wasn't complaining all those years ago. Though I do recall that 94 or 95 I'd turn from the stage and look into the sky for the parts that my eyes were open for.

hazelnut, There is aslo something that is intangible...it is the charisma of the artist. This is something that cannot be replicated no matter how many scales you practice. You either have this or you don't. And Jerry clearly had that. This is why these other players, no matter how technically correct they are, cannot fill his shoes.

This was some performance. Thank God I've got a companion book by David Dodd, the complete annotated GRATEFUL DEAD LYRICS, which I highly recommend. I've never paid that much attention to the lyrics of any songs, Dead or otherwise, simply loved the music itself, but it's worth it to invest in this book. Robert Hunter used his Muse wisely.
