I guess this means I've been watching this obsessively for 10 years now. It's never lost a fraction of its impact for me. The Berliner Ensemble singing Shakespeare in Rufus Wainwright's best crack at Neue Deutsche Welle...Christ it doesn't get better than this.

Was wird gesungen??? HILFE!!! Warme Grüsse aus Brasilien.

3x So wie ein schlechter Spieler as the bad actor Auf der Buehne on stage Vor Lampenfieber seinen Text nicht kennt does not know his text because of his fright So wie der wilde Stier as the wild bull der allzu kuehne the too bold vor Wut dem Fechter in den Degen rennt in anger runs in the fencer's epee vergesse ich I am forgetting du zwingst mich zu verzagen you force me to lose heart der rechten Liebeswerbung Brauch und Sinn the right courtship's tradition and sense fuehl meine Staerke feel my power Liebeskraft versagen love power to fail Bringe mich vor Leidenschaft um den Gewinn I am so passionately so I cannot win (...) So lasset meinen Vers davon verkünden so let my vers tell of Einem stummen Rufe der beredten Brust a silent call of a eloquent chest Von meiner Lieb mit höherem Empfinden (not sure about it) of my love with higher greater sense mehr als mein Unterlass more than my ceasing zu tun to gedacht I though lern lesen doch learn to read but Was stumme Liebe schrieb what silent love wrote down mit Augen hören kann with eyes I can hear lernt lesen, was stumme Liebe verstän' geliebt' (these last two words are not really german, like they are transformed shakespearesque - verstän' could mean something like of course) mit Augen hören kann verstän' gelieb' The woman in black: Lern lesen, doch was stumme Liebe schrieb: mit Augen hören kann verständ' gelieb' Sorry I am a bad translator. I tried my best :D

not too bad... maybe i can help. the song is more a paraphrase of the sonnet than a literal translation. the last line reads: "mit augen hören kann verständige liebe" verständig meaning smart, wise. translation of "love's fine wit". cheers

Its Shakespeares Sonnet No. 23: As an unperfect actor on the stage, Who with his fear is put besides his part, Or some fierce thing replete with too much rage, Whose strength’s abundance weakens his own heart; So I, for fear of trust, forget to say The perfect ceremony of love’s rite, And in mine own love’s strength seem to decay, O'ercharged with burden of mine own love’s might. O let my books be then the eloquence And dumb presagers of my speaking breast, Who plead for love and look for recompense More than that tongue that more hath more expressed. O learn to read what silent love hath writ! To hear with eyes belongs to love’s fine wit. I'm sure you can find it in your language too.
