When I was a young teen, my father told me about Luther Perkins, and the incredible story of how J. Cash found Bob Wooten to be his regular guitarist. When we would watch "The Johnny Cash Show" on TV, I remember saying to my Dad, "He looks more like Johnny Cash than Johnny Cash"😅 As every TRUE fan of Cash, Luther, & Wooten knows, Bob played his solo on Folsom Prison Blues slightly different than Luther did. I read an article out of a music mag one time where Wooten was being interviewed, and he admitted that where he ,Wooten, did a credible job when he played "I Walk The Line " on stage with Cash, try as he may, he couldn't play it "exactly like Luther".

Who else here in 2022? Great voice & sound. Saw Bob a couple of Times as part of the Cash Show in Germany. Once talked to him briefly at the backstage entrance before the concert started. He came to us few fans who where there right corner/right time. 😄 R.I.P. thx👍

My sister and I heard Bob Wootton play at the 100 year old Fairmont Opera House in Fairmont,MN in August,2012.He had a memorable performance.I liked his version of "Sunday Morning Sidewalk."

I'm 63 now and grew up listening to "Ride This Train" from about 63-64 and found that CD years ago finally and have loved it since then.I'm a wild electric player/fan too but there just aint nothing like Luther Perkins !, but have given it up for Worship Guitar for The King of Kings the past 20 years or so...!!!! I guess I LIKE it and things just a happen that way...... AMEN!

@@DarkKnight_4805 I remember him forgetting the lyrics for a couple seconds. I also noticed him dropping his hand. This was the first song of the night and he may have been just getting warmed up. I don't recall him messing up any more lyrics. I talked to him briefly after the show and he seemed fine.

Thanks for the comments, Brad, all are good points. Having met and talked with Mr. Wooton, I can say in my experience he is a nice man. Having an ego in the entertainment business is not uncommon and in some ways necessary. I'm sure Johnny Cash could have had just about any guitar player he wanted, so there must be a reason he stuck with Bob so long. I'm guessing Bob would be one of the first to praise the talents of the writers and original performers of these songs, however, they are no longer here and he is, still giving us his version of the "boom-chicka-boom". Lastly, I would think that Carl Perkins falls somewhere in the top percentage of rockabilly guitarists, and could easily get the right sound for Cash's songs, where many others can't. Thanks again.

While I'm a huge Cash admirer/fan, I can honestly say that I am not a huge fan of Wootton. Perkins wrote the guitar parts that Wootton would cover for his entire career. This doesn't make him Perkins. My dislike for this man only came recently when i watched an interview with him where he was quoted as saying, "...only about 1/2 of 1% of guitar players can actually play this style the correct way..." Guy has a bit of an ego, whether he shows it often or not. Playing anything Cash is not the hard part. Being the men who WROTE this timeless music is the hard part. Cash, Perkins, and Grant deserve credit. Chicken picking is fun. The boom-chickuh-boom came from Perkins. Give credit where credit is due. Carl Perkins also spent several years playing with Cash before Wootton came along. Carl nailed this stuff just like any other solid musician could. So please, if you're going to give credit, give credit where credit is due. Not to a guy who has literally rested his laurels on the good grace of others for an entire career.
