So by crushing a can, it may no longer register what it is and put it in the non-recyclable pile.' Though: 'If you already separate your recycling, with cans being placed together in their own bag or bin, then crushing your cans is totally fine.' It's their base of operations, so maybe they have a more nuanced system to their recycling.

@@ducky5945 I think a lot of recycling is done by hand in recycling centres here. There will be machines sorting somewhat but workers identify components that have been mixed up. Where my family lives, the council even sorts recyclable material that has been put in the rubbish by mistake.

Crushing cans depends on the location you're recycling at, but where I work they prefer it when the cans aren't crushed because it's more likely for people to go over the weight limit.

Lewis is right I worked at a recycling plant for a year and we end up throwing away alot of stuff because people stuff trash and food into plastic, and cardboard boxes have trash in it most of the time and we can't get it out because they crush it. So 70% of it ends up in the trash just because people leave trash in it. Humanity sucks sometimes. When I mean they crush if I mean the garbage companies do, so keep that in mind next time you recycle, don't waste everyone's time by putting trash in it.

Fun fact your are not actually supposed to crush cans for recycling. They can get stuck in the rexycling centers sorters and crushers.

It depends on your cities recycling centre! If your city uses single-stream recycling (all recyclables are sorted together) then it's bad to crush cans because it's harder for the electrical currents to identify aluminum cans, and causes them to get stuck as you mentioned. However, if your city uses multi or dual-stream recycling (where you separate your cans from other recyclables) then it's perfectly fine to crush cans, and helps save space if you have a lot that needs to be recycled.
