Her family and mine went to the same church in the Atlanta community in chickasaw county mississippi. Some of the best folks youd ever meet. Her grandmother maude streeter gave me a crystal dish for Christmas 42 years ago when i was 15. It still sits on my coffee table after all these years. Love the reaction!

Its located in the atlanta community like i said but i believe that its address is probably listed as woodland Mississippi. Both of our families are buried in the cemetery there. And i dont know about her singing in that church. She had moved away long before i moved there.

Bobby Gentry is an American singer-songwriter who was one of the first female artists to compose & produce her own material. A lot of her songs were stories. Her biggest hit was in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe". Other songs are "Mississippi Delta", "Fancy", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Sunday Mornin" (with Glen Campbell) etc.

In the sixties we heard music on our radios, at home and in the car. This song had massive airplay. The songs story was so very easy to see in your minds eye. As you said haunting, so so haunting. Another haunting and beautifully written songs is Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

You did a reaction a while back to Reba McIntyres song Fancy, Bobby Gentry also wrote that song and had a #1 hit. She stopped performing, and started producing. Another golden voice did the same thing. Gary Pucket of the Union Gap also went into producing. You should check them out, soon, oh what a voice he had/has. Gary Pucket and the Union Gap. The point of the song was how crass her family acted concerning a tragedy involving someone they all knew. Whatever was thrown seems important, but it isn't. It's a MacGuffin.

And the fact that she can't talk about her deceased child, or his father, and the fact that she knows perfectly well why his father Billie Joe has committed suicide. She just has to sit there and be silent with what she knows...and take it. And pretend to eat. Which, according to the song, her perceptive mother notices she is failing at...not having eaten a bite. And contrary to what some people think, it is not at all about the alleged, but nonexistent "family crassness or unconcern" about either her or her secret boyfriend. Families, particularly fathers, talk about teenage boys like this all the time. Particularly ones they don't directly know, but do know of in general, but don't have a high opinion of. They don't even have to hate them. All it takes is just to know of some infraction or another, or failure of some sort, by the hapless young man, or if he has a sense of humor or something, and played a prank or something, and the father will automatically talk trash about him. And it wouldn't matter if he did just commit suicide. Billie Joe was known for pranks...as was the man's own son, as helpfully referenced in the song. That should have been a clue, as to the cause of the fathers casual contempt. The clue is that he probably pranked other people as well. And that is why the father said he didn't have "a lick of sense". That is PRECISELY how a father of that day would refer to a young man who was known to have a gonzo sense of humor. I pick up on these clues, other people, not so much apparently. That's the story in a nutshell. It's so utterly simple. It's embarrassing that some modern people, who are naive and culturally removed from the culture this song is written about, and who besides, don't have any independent, critical thinking skills, cannot automatically perceive the story. I automatically knew what this song was all about when I was a teenager. And so did everyone else at the time. Some people here think I'm getting "wound up about it", but it is just the contempt I have for people who are incapable of thinking their way out of a brown paper bag. I feel like someone who is having to explain a Dick and Jane, and Spot the Dog book to someone. This story is of course more complicated than that, but it's not mysterious, nor a story with a hidden meaning or anything. The listener has a birds eye view of all the details of the story, necessary to understand it. And no movie is necessary to understand it further. And unfortunately the movie that was made, was a purely invented farce. It was not the story of the song at all. There was no rag doll, and Billie Joe did not have a gay experience. The producer of the movie was gay, and he wrote himself into the story, that's all there was to that. Geez people! Get a BRAIN! And THINK with it! Don't just use it to prop out the inside of your skull! Use your brain!

@@dchall8 1) Simply saying "muh Gentry said this and muh movie said that" is not an argument. It is mental laziness! 2) Gentry was trying to avoid the appearance of being difficult, by disagreeing with the absurd false interpretation of the movie. She wanted more movie deals for her songs. She ultimately didn't get them, but she wanted them. 3) Songwriters frequently (and inexplicably to me) often state that they don't know what their songs are about. This is not uncommon. Many of them write from their subconscious or unconscious mind rather from their conscious mind. And while this may make their songs more creative sometimes, it literally keeps them from actually understanding their own song consciously. In these cases, I've noticed that their conscious interpretation of their song is poorly constructed logically, or is illogical, or is utterly impossible. This is the case here, if, in the unlikely event, Gentry were actually NOT looking for additional movie deals. Which I am 100 percent certain that she was. So, in conclusion. In point #2 above, I don't know more about her song than she does. But she is lying to her fans to this day about the song. And knows it. In point #3, she's not lying to the fans, but she is deeply incorrect. And in this scenario, in fact, I and millions of her fans do literally, in fact, know more about her song than she does. At the end of the day, it is a deceased baby. It is centrally important, and is in point of fact the pivotal fact of the entire song. And the movie, in every way that it contradicts the song, is a retconned lie, after the fact, of the song. Gentry is lying, or she is wrong! It wouldn't be the first time that a music industry person lied to the fans, or was wrong, and it won't be the last.

Keep in mind that this was live. The studio version is very close. I remember this from my childhood and have a very cherished vinyl album from the 60's with Bobby Gentry and Glen Campbell which is an outstanding album. I thought the BBC violins/cellos were outstanding - they really knew how to arrange so that it sounds very close to the recorded version.

Back when this song came out in 1967 there were huge debates over what it was that she and Billy Joe were throwing off the bridge. The general consensus was that it was a baby and Billy Joe was so full of remorse that he took his own life on the same site. When Bobbie Gentry was asked what it was she would never tell. She said to just interpret it however you wanted to interpret it. She also wrote and was the first person to record Fancy that was recorded much later by Reba McEntyre. You are correct that her song writing is nearly flawless.

The bridge mentioned in the song soon became an attraction and many attempted to jump from it. However, no casualties were ever reported since the bridge was only 6 meters high. The bridge collapsed in 1972 but was later rebuilt.

I forgot to say that she is from my home state of Mississippi. I have played in the Tallahatchie River many times in New Albany, Mississippi because it runs through there also. And, I am sure that you caught the mention of TUPELO. Of course that is where ELVIS was born and grew up, until he was around 14 years of age. She is a fantastic singer and song writer. She also sang her piece "FANCY", although Reba seemed to do better with that one. However, I do like to hear BOBBY sing it too! "ODE TO BILLY JOE " hauntingly beautiful and stays with you for days after you hear it. In my opinion, it is the perfect song; A MASTERPIECE!!! I have never heard another song that affected me in the way this song did! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! And like I said in the other comment, "ODE TO BILLY JOE" won single of the year and she won best new female in 1968!
