@@jilliant.4550 Huh? The story wasn't "embellished", it was down right incorrect, factually wrong and 90% of it is pure fantasy. I mean for crying out loud, the story says that the flag was held up and people were killed holding it, insinuating that's why American's don't "let the flag hit the ground". Pure and utter bullshit. Nobody died holding the flag, nobody held the flag in the first place and the flag was never even on the ground. Less than a handful of people died (4), and none of their deaths had to do with the flag. The song lyrics at the end state "what so proudly we held", because the video says "we held the flag". The literal lyrics to the anthem itself is wrong and incorrect in the video, it's HAILED, not held, nobody "held" shit. Also, the flag was NEVER a target, it was never even a part of the attack. The British didn't give two flying shits about the flag flying. I mean I could sit here and go into more details about the factually incorrect nonsense and lies in the video, but that's all anyone really needs to know - barely anybody died, the flag was NEVER held by anybody, the flag was NEVER on the ground and the British didn't give a shit about the flag. This isn't "embellishing" or "not being entirely accurate" - this is lying, incorrect false fictional nonsense that never happened.

The war of 1812 is where this comes from, this is sometimes refered to as the Second American revolution. It actually is full of wonderful stories of American grit. I remember reading where the British infantry were advancing on Alexandria, VA and the only militia force available were twenty-five 12-15 year old boys from the local school. They got their rifled muskets from home and defended a bridge crossing for almost three hours. Fighting a blocking battle so that more local men could be rounded up to defend Washington DC.

Fun fact, in the US military it is considered wholeheartedly disgraceful and disrespectful to allow the flag to touch the ground, even for the briefest moment and even the smallest piece of the flag (due to the history of the song). They even have toy practice this in basic training with a unit flag called a “guideon”. They’ll grab it from your platoons guide and chuck it as far as they can, forcing you to run and catch it. Some guys even dove head first into the muck and sand to keep it from touching the ground. We’re fiercely patriotic, most Americans anyway. Also, don’t be ashamed of your countries history brother. Every single country on the planet has had a dark history and done things that where reprehensible at some point in time. Recognize it, understand and apologize, and vow to never do it again, but don’t allow yourself to feel unending guilt or shame for your country. It’s what’s distorting pride in America nowadays.

As an example, just some of the things we Americans should hang our head about. Taking the british prisoners and using them as slaves. "indentured servants" Black slavery, what we did to the indians and the land itself, Japanese-American concentration camps during WW II. These are just some examples. No country is perfect.
@kristofevarsson69033 жыл бұрын
@@32202masterj One of the reasons the War of 1812 was fought was because British privateers would capture American shipping vessels and indenture their crews into slavery of their own; American slavery was one of the shortest periods of organized chattel slavery of one race over another in human history meanwhile the Arab Slave Trade continues every day with most slaves being sold to Saudi Arabia; Just about half of all the smaller wars making up the greater Indian Wars here in America were instigated or perpetrated by the tribes themselves, it wasn't always just us attacking them - don't pretend the Amerindian civilizations weren't warlike especially amongst themselves; Japanese-Americans, German-Americans, and Italian-Americans all did truly suffer in concentration camps here in the States on a level of depravity and agony comparable to the ones in Germany and the Pacific - the only major difference is that we weren't trying to exterminate them, and even that claim is a little bit shoddy. I wholeheartedly agree no country is perfect.
@32202masterj3 жыл бұрын
@@kristofevarsson6903 My only point about the Indians is it was their country. We, well in my case, half my ancestors invaded the country. Also we have not taken care of it. I don't deny their were bad individuals and tribes. We both agree on the main point. There are and have never been perfect countries. Just as an example, because it wasn't one of your responses of my first post. Black slavery. Yes southerners bought them. But who transported them? The northern shippers. Now what most people never bring up. Who captured and sold them in the first place? Rival tribes in Africa.

Mr. Key actually wrote four stanzas, but we only sing the first. If anyone's curious, here is the complete song: O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country, should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation. Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.' And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

For to kneel is to say you disagree with what she stands for. Freedom and Justice. For me, to show disrespect to those ideas and to the men who died for those ideas is abhorrent. The flag stands for all that is good and is what our country set out to strive for. We've had growing pains and didn't always get it right, and to voice an opinion on those wrongs or any perceived current ones is anyone's right per the 1st amendment. But it shouldn't be done to the detriment of the symbol of all that is good. That would be like disrespecting the Ten Commandments because people weren't always following all of them. The ideas it stands for is what your showing respect to and not the men or Government that go against it.

As an American, I knew this general story, but the details are better. I worried, when younger, that foreigners would misinterpret it as an arrogant praise of war instead of a representation of principles of a hopeful people. The Anthem always makes me cry and I’m forever grateful for the fine people that came before me. It’s true that there’s strict rules about not desecrating the flag in any way, to honor those that fought for and love our country. Thank you for your lovely comments. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

The overall story is awesome, and true, but the details are largely fabricated.

I'm a Desert Storm Army infantry veteran and I cry EVERY time I hear The Star Spangled Banner because I know what those words mean and what those who held that flag up felt. I will die before I let ANYONE take down My Flag. I served because I wanted to return the gift of Freedom that was given to me by SO MANY even many in my family😢 God Bless America

American Vet here, I've seen this video dozens of times and it always gets to me a bit when he says it was patriots bodies holding the flag up. More people should know the story. Don't need to apologize for not knowing the origin of the National Anthem, most people don't know the national Anthem of other countries. Also, don't be ashamed of the British with the prisoner quarters, that's just the way things were, it's not like we had bleach or sanitary wipes. Great reaction

Late comer, 11 mths after posting, but heart warming that our friends, the British, which my ancestors came from on Dad’s side, reacted with such honesty. Both sides lost loved ones & today we stand side by side in global wars. We’ve come a long way. Heartbreaks losing the dear Queen. I grew up admiring her for 65 years & wept all thru the weeks of honoring her God bless America & Britain. God save the King

It's a little crazy that our origin is because of British Expansion. I mean my original North Ameican Ancestor was an English Colonist in 1635. An Exile sent to colonize for the King at 20 years old. His descendants fought the British in the Revolution and this war, The War Of 1812. And today you probably can't find a stronger alliance between two other nations in the world. This story isn't just for Americans, it's for anybody who believes in peace and freedom and is willing to fight for it. In this era of oppression and conquest of our free societies It's needed more than ever. Let Freedom Ring.

I spent 20 years in the US Air Force (1974 to 1995) I volunteered to be in a drill team and color guard and in 1976 during America's 200th year celebrations we marched in the Saint Patrick's day parade in New York City. We went all over New York State fostering a fellowship with every performance. I loved marching and drill and ceremonies. When I became the ranking member of the color guard I carried the US flag, raised flags, and lowered flags which had to be folded just so. The reason I mentioned this was because we were never to allow the flag to touch the ground for any reason because treating the flag with respect and honor was a privilege I'll never forget. After our drill team broke up I joined the mortuary detail as part of the color guard. At all of the funerals of deceased military members ceremonies the color guard was always at the head of the casket at the gravesite. The pall bearers (all military) would fold the flag draped over the coffin. The color guard remained at attention during the 21 gun salute, the playing of taps, and the folding of the flag and presentation of it to the family. We might not have known the story behind our national anthem, but the flag represents freedom and is our symbol of the "standing on our feet versus living on our knees. The thing is most of us in the military fight because we want all people to enjoy the type freedoms that that we have in the US. Forget politics, the reason most volunteer and go into harms way is because the downtrodden, the persecuted, the places where evil lives, the genocidal dictators, all of the victims - what our flag stands for is the heart of who we are (patriotism exemplified) and the drive to help is part of our DNA. This is the reason why the US is committed to helping UKRAINE. We were there once upon a time and fighting for and supporting UKRAINE is a given. We really are all about freedom for all regardless of country, ethnicity, religious affiliation, race, etc. We are all human beings and deserve to be treated with respect. Sorry for the length. I loved your reaction.

The music used for the American national anthem was originally composed by John Stafford smith for a British song called To Anacreon in heaven The picture of the prisoners I’ve seen in a book about convicts being transported to Australia

Thank you for taking your time in learning about us. I love my country and my flag but I hope you see tho that we’re still family. Just because we wanted our own space our land and identity and ways of doing things doesn’t mean we’re not still part of Britain. We’re family and families fight but we have forgiven our history and past. One thing I can assure you of is our deep friendship and love for your people our people and we’d always have your backs in any fight.

I can't count on both hands how many times I have been listening to these videos. Every time I find another one, I listen again and sob. To me it's the most beautiful song on earth. America is my second home and I'm proud to live here. I honor all military personal. They give their service for free and willingly sacrifice their lives for their country. Thank you for allowing me to live here as a free human being. May America never forget how they received their freedom. Many times we forget that we are a nation under God. May our Lord bless us always. As long as we don't forget that, we will be a free country. Amen. What does the word Amen mean? It means, so be it. Amen.
