note for Seth and anyone else using a pickup or larger for hooking up the pump to power. Most newer model and a large portion of earlier models have a 7 pin connector for connecting a trailer with electric brakes. There are two terminals that will provide a ground and 12v at all times. I have this arrangement for a transfer tank to fuel equipment and it's been a great addition. No extra battery in the bed, no draping a long cord to connect to the underhood battery, etc. Please don't hook up to the flat 4 wire connector, if you blow a fuse you may not have running lights, brake or taillights. The 7 pin is protected with either a fuse or circuit breaker.
@ke6gwf3 жыл бұрын
The trailer connector is not designed for large loads. It's supposed to recharge batteries in a camping trailer. Look at the size of the wire running to it. For running a pump you want to have a large wire straight to the battery to avoid voltage drop. Putting a local battery charged from the main battery is a good idea, but you need large enough wires straight to the alternator to get continuous current.
@brownsbloomtenders3 жыл бұрын
@@ke6gwf actually they are there to recharge the break away battery on any trailer with electric brakes and a backup battery. On both of my Dodge pickups they have a 20A breaker to protect them. I'm certain that will vary across manufacturers somewhat. The diaphragm pump Seth is using draws roughly 4 Amps so should fall within the operating range of both fuse and vehicle wiring. Most of my equipment trailers, traditional hitch and gooseneck or 5th wheel have these break away systems. You are correct in that they will recharge the house batteries on a camper.

Thank you Bob and Seth. You're exactly right, 5 gal containers are a pain to try to pour syrup. I bought a 6 gal container from Wal-Mart. It weighed 62.5 lbs full of syrup. But was that a feat to pour! This looks like a process I can make work. My goal is 50 hives.

Neat system and as I run a boatyard we have loads of those pumps floating around. One thing you might notice when running it off a battery. If the volts do get too low then sometimes the shutoff doesn't trigger. You think you've got a bad pressure switch, but it's just the low volts.

VERY timely video Bob! Just purchased a 275 gallon tote and I have been mulling over the best way to set up syrup feeding. Yes indeed, feeding bees with 5 gallon totes or buckets is not ideal. Thanks for posting! 👍

Totes work great for me, I got a sur-flow 12v ,3.8 gpm on mine, I plumbed it to valve on tote, an other side of pump goes to a 3/4" garden hose 100' long on a old manual hose reel I already had, I cut male end of hose off an put a ball valve with a street 90° on end of valve, it works awesome, it doesn't like 2/1 syurp though, so I thin it just a bit, I feed all pro-sweet though, it may be a bit thicker than 2/1 sugar. Also I mounted everything on cage that holds tote. An just plug it into trailer plug on back of truck.

I purchased the same pump, a 1inch dispensing nozzle, and a 1" hose. Haven't decided on the plastic 65 Gallon Horizontal Leg Tank ($340) from tractor supply or a 55-gallon drum. Feeding 50 colonies. The horizontal tank is a lower profile, less apt to tip over, the 55-gallon drum is far less expensive. Any recommendations Bob?
@bobbinnie98723 жыл бұрын
I've never used the Tractor Supply tank so I'm hesitant to say for sure. I looked it up on line and see that it has an outlet at the bottom so it could be more convenient and bee-tight but you would still need a filter screen in line ahead of the pump.

Nice setup. Just need to mount the hose on a small reel. As stated pickups really don’t work well for beekeeping operations of any size. Flatbeds or even stake bodies are much more convenient.

Agreed. I would also caution people to make sure the reel doesn't have a small ID on the swivel.

Wouldn't take a lot to craft a bit of pipework to use a pump which uses one outlet back into the pump to get it swirling and once it's mixed switch to the pipe with the trigger. I don't know if that pump would cope with sludge though?
@woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc3 жыл бұрын
@@johntusting2467 Yeah that's true but being a farmer and having used diaphragm pumps a lot for spraying I'm not sure if the diaphragm pump would have enough flow to get the syrup to swirl and mix. Unless you or someone know of a 12v pump that would have enough gpm, a person may have to have a mixing setup and then put the liquid in the feeding system to take to the yard.

U don't open feed in the south? I don't like feeding in the hive any more than I have too. Too labor intense. When needed I feed 15 gal of 1:1 in a small livestock tank for every 60 hives. Mix it just b4 light in the tank and top with straw. It's gone in 3hrs. A hose, tank and shovel are my investments. They are going to fly anyhow. A week of fall feeding at that rate and the hive are heavy. Anyone still light... that's rare but if yes I just add a box and feed from an inverted jar.

Hi Diane. There are bee yards that belong to other people in our area.
@dianetaylor67513 жыл бұрын
Yah I get that for sure. It's why I want my bees to clean it all up in around 3 hrs early as possible. After lunch time the hoards move In. Other's bees, wasps, hornets, butterflies, swift flies and more. Morning seems to be a magic time that these bums are else where. But let the day warm up and suddenly it's like the Apocalypse is impending and marauders are everywhere. Time to feed all my hives individually is just hard to come by for me.
