This really is a great video, because what's funny is that I was having a discussion about this subject with one of my teachers on Amsterdam Fashion Institute about a month ago. She was unfortunately down talking about integrating and using CLO3D and other digital design software in my processing and didn't understand why it is a huge advantage to me. She then gave me a lower grade for using it which I disagreed to, so later on I found this video and send it to her which led to her apologizing and revising my grade. The conclusion of my story is that you really are inspiring and teach very well since it puts in perspective why it's important for design teachers and more people in the industry to be educated about the advantages of technology integration for it can make changes in how someone will be graded or understood - I love how you viewed it from both sides as I too love and respect working physically too but I really use the future forward tech as an extension of my work and its great that someone like my teacher now sees that too. So thank you!

same problem here. I just completed first year and it was a battle every time I mentioned CLO3D or AI design to help my workflow. So many fashion designers are stuck in the past and refuse to accept these technologies can actually amplify a designers ability.

I am sure there are other courses and KZbin channels. I teach at Parsons School of Design and there is an online certificate program. It has 4 levels. I teach level 3.

great video! Thank you, you just gained a new subscriber. I'm fairly new to the fashion field, I started studying (online, short courses, a bunch of trial and error) 2 years ago and I would like to continue learning, this time with technology. I started to make patterns on Ai very recently, and all this time I use the traditional method. While I enjoy it, it can be very time consuming and exhausting. Using software like these is a great way to speed up the process and it's very efficient. While it's absolutely great, I believe it's necessary to learn how to make patterns with traditional method and make a physical sample FIRST before starting using software. I have a question, have you done a video where you sew the patterns you make on CLO3D and whether they look the same as on the avatar?

Absolutely!! Without fundamental pattern knowledge you cannot create real outfits even in digital fashion. I have not made a video where I have both the physical patterns and the digital patterns, but my students at Parsons School Design do it all the time. Not the videos, but the process. Some make the digital outdoor and then print the patterns. Others do a fitting on an avatar and then make the patterns or visa versus.

Initially, I was considering the PAD system, but recently I came across CLO3D, and now I'm feeling a bit torn. I was wondering if you could provide some insights on whether CLO3D is as accurate for pattern making as the PAD system. CLO is very accurate, but not the easiest for drafting patterns. The advantage of CLO is that you can see the garments draped on an avatar and see how the fit is and/or how a particular fabric behaves on the body. I see that as an advantage over other software that is pattern drafting only. If you don’t care about seeing the garments on a figure and just want pattern drafting I would recommend PAD, but if you want to see the actual garment immediately CLO is your best friend! I love Clo! I think its amazing and I absolutely agree that 3D sampling is the future of fashion design. Clo 3D is definitely worth learning, I've been using it for about a year and started because I wanted to learn digital pattern drafting. It's such an amazing resource and I've become totally engaged with the whole rabbit hole of 3D software capabilities!

Just finished a class on CLO3D at a local junior college. It was great. Like you said...way faster prototyping...and for actual fitting, make it and figure that out. But you will save muslin and other fabrics by starting with CLO.

Hi! I am hoping you can give some insight to my delimma. I am a new self-taught sewer, interested in having my own atelier where I custom create garments from a catalogue of my RTW designs. Clients can come in or go online, choose what they want and I custom create it to their body. I am thinking that learning Clo3D will be best for me to get started with doing this because 1.) it is just me and I’ll need to work quickly. 2.) I am more interested in the end result that the process of “feeling” the materials from the beginning, as you mention in the video. 3.) since I am working with different bodies, I feel it would be easier to simply update my mannequin to each persons measurements to adjust my patterns and then begin to cut and sew. I would essentially be using Clo3D as my pattern making process. To then print those patterns and physically create a sample for each client. Do you think that is a proper way to use Clo3D or is that too far-fetched?

That is absolutely a valid way of working with CLO! You can create an avatar with the desired body measurements and then make the patterns and simulate your designs. You can show various color ways and decide on your designs together with your client. And yes you can print the patterns directly from CLO and use them. I have students who use this exact process and make their designs. Good luck and let me know how it works for you!! 💛

Clo3d, Style3d, Browzwear, Optitex and the others 3d software are all great. No matter which one you like the most and why. All have the same problem in my opinion. Can we really trust the digital fabric behavior? Not 100% for now. But as first draft of your designs they win hands down. No doubts. The fashion industry need more designers using 3d technology. Pattern makers are more likely to embrace 3d. Designer are a little scared from the 2d part of the 3d workflow.

Absolutely! The way CLO adjusts the fabric or material around the avatar makes the simulations look great. We have a long way to go until we can completely trust the digital methods, but such software has already won its place in the industry no matter what!

@@BobbinTalk CLO3D is more likely to be used because of its single user license offer. For all the others you need to work in a company who has one of them. Now Style3d has starting spreading outside the China market. They are bringing some interesting improvements. I think it's important to have an healthy competition to keep R&D teams awake.

Yes you can!! You can customize an avatar with your own measurements and use it to create and simulate garments on it.

Hi Can you please make another video on how to change camera angles while animating? You might have seen ppl animate from different angles while the avatar is doing a walk. Does it happen after animating different angles and then editing it with other video editing software? Can you please answer my doubt?

I'm still waiting for better avatars to create close fittings garments, especially lingerie. Not being able to change the bust sizing is the only disadvantage. Its cool that they added the soft body feature but it's far from being a perfect science if we are doing custom bodies outside of a standard sample size. I do find Vstitcher avatars have more options to truly fine tune the body measurements however its abit harder to use for those who aren't use to the UI

You can change the size of the avatar to whatever custom measurements you want including height and bust measurements. Just open the Avatar Size by going to Main Menu > Avatar > Avatar Editor > Avatar Size

Can I ask you for your opinion on artificial intelligence? I mean it's one thing to simulate physics as in cloth, but now AI can simulate essentially all forms of art as well as the logic and observation that goes into the discovery process of art. Don't you think that many clothing designers will be replaced with a button press on an AI clothing generator? I certainly do. Eventually you will be able to show an AI what you have in your closet, and what you like on celebrities and the runway, and the AI will create a brand new wardrobe custom tailored to fit your size based on what you show it. I don't see how that future would be avoided outside of the possibility of humanity stumbling into nuclear self annihilation. What I'm getting at is the fact that AI is an existential threat to anyone who feels like participation in art is a reward in and of itself. And one of the few things that humanity does which makes existence on earth seem meaningful. But now AI will be the most prolific artist in the history of earth. Absolutely flooding the internet with AI designs at a break neck pace. What will clothing designers do in 10 years or so when AI begins to take over completely? Or do you think that AI isn't a threat at all? I'm curious.

That’s a complex prediction to make, but as of right now Ai has no imagination of its own and cannot make clothes. It can pull from inspiration based on prompts from humans and mix and match various art styles, but it cannot think for itself. It is limited to the database it draws from and the people directing it. It is very far away from draping fabric for example, or drafting patterns or sewing a garment. If anything this creates a whole other skill for all of us. That’s prompt engineering, the art of directing Ai so you can get the results you want.

​@@BobbinTalk Interesting. Thank you for the reply. But consider this. You remember when Google and Facebook were new, right? None of us understood the reason for their existence or what they business plan was. We didn't understand that they were gathering intelligence on everyone and selling it and that this was their business model. Predicting human activity, needs, and desires in order profit from the value of this information. Well... consider this... AI is in a similiar situation as Google and Facebook once were. People don't understand what the true business model for AI actually is. They assume, as they once assumed with facebook, that it was just a cool new tool that benefitted them, their friends, and their families on a personal level. But that's not true. The AI is learning from the prompts that humans enter into it. With every successful prompt a human enters, the AI figures out which prompts work better and it retains this information. Bit by bit, as the general population becomes better with prompts, the AI's data on prompts also improves, until it gets to a point where it can make prompts without human involvement. In fact, it will make prompts better than 99% of all humans could makesbut also at an exponential speed that human can't match. The reason that these AI companties are allowing massive numbers of users to enter prompts is that one day the AI can make these "prompts" without us. Just like facebook and google, they are profitting from us, without most of us even realizing it. The idea of a prompt engineer is appealing, but obviously, a computer will be able to make better prompts faster than a human can type, speak, or think once it has been given the instructions that allows it to do this. I don't mean to be argumentative, I just want artists to think carefully about what is going on with AI.

The designer doesn't only sketch but the sketch is only the initial part. so, even thou maybe ai will create the design but it can't make the real clothes. A designer will source their materials, will talk to vendors and technicians and tailors, and people who will finish garments. these processes can't be done by an AI.
