The Universal Color Wheel Works.
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Ah... the Universal Color Wheel! This BobBlast may serve as a gentle reminder for us painters who rely on our standard, universal color wheel - as well as those just starting to paint.
There are TWELVE separate colors on the rotating color wheel. The artist determines the color combination before starting to paint. The color combination must stay in place throughout the painting. If the artist abandons the original color combination, (changes his mind, etc.) the painting begins to fall apart. Practice small warm up paintings of each color combination to familiarize yourself.
Selecting the color combination is very important - you can convey feelings, emotion and mood through the voice of color. Some examples are:
1. Stormy Night - Select dark blues and purples
2. Convey Excitement - Select reds and oranges
3. Serenity - Select pale pinks, light blues and greys
Simply said, the color wheel works well... if the artist uses the specific color combinations shown on the rotating wheel. There are MANY color combos you can work with from the universal color wheel and this BobBlast touches on only a few that I use. In the interest of uncomplicating your time in the studio - I demo and talk about the first four color combinations that we ought to know: Monochromatic, Analogous, Complementary and Triadic.
Monochromatic - Choose only one color PLUS black and white.
Analogous - Choose four colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as: Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow and Yellow-Green. These colors all touch each other on the Color Wheel. Spin the wheel to see more!
Complementary - Choose two colors opposite one another, such as: Red and Green, Yellow and Violet, Blue and Orange.
Triadic - 3 Colors. Choose ONE color, then the other two colors are determined by counting to four around the wheel. Such as Red (count four) Blue (count four) Yellow.
Practice and stick with these combinations until you feel comfortable moving on to the many more color harmonies and theories available out there!
If you like successful and heavenly pleasing works of art, stay with the color wheel... you devil you!

Thanks for this reminder. My focus this Month has been color combos and harmony. I tend to do other things well. Can you also discuss the "Mother color" aspect when applying color combos?

I never decide in the beginning...it just evolves. BUT... I am going to try this and see how it feels. (no art school, just painting for...me..but wanting to learn more!) Thank you!

Hi Bob! You're a great teacher. One of the first vids I watched was 'carrot people'. I'm so new (3/17) I needed some really easy way to add some peeps to my painting. I fell onto you. I'm hooked. I love your red under-painting. Why do you call it gesso? I am so confused? I bought a GALLON of white Gesso to prime canvas. Can I use the under-painting on ready primed canvas? The color wheel has been the bane of my creative ideas. I learned only last week we can make every color from the primary colors! Thank you for sharing. I like your simple color wheel BTW

You should make your color wheel into an app. I'd buy that.

Can you comment on why artists use yellow, red, blue as primaries when the colors should (?) be yellow, magenta, cyan?

It's not just yellow, magenta and cyan. Some add magenta and cyan to red, yellow and blue in order to be able to mix vivid pinks and violets. So it's just an extended palett

Thank you Bob, for this gentle reminder. How would you rate the universal colour wheel to your own? What prompted you to make the modifications?

What do you mean by the universal wheel? Bob was showing totally standard 12 color wheel and a few classic color schemes, clarify what modifications if you want, just saying for your info.

He did not mention it in this video, but I'm referring to Bob Burridge's Goof Proof Colour Wheel: it has 10 colours instead of 12. You will find it quickly by googling it. I've always been intrigued by it, but I must admit, it works.

Universal color wheels should be available pretty much anywhere art supplies are sold. Michaels, Jerry's, sometimes even Walmart carry them.

I don't think these colour wheels are any good. There ARE no rules. My recent pictures of dystopian futures have pink and yellow and red. Traditionally happy colours but in the context of my work they are anything but. Love your videos!
