"Coffee Cups - Paint Everyday Objects."
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
You know how much I like sketchbooks! I have devoted several BobBlasts in the praise of sketchbooks. I use mine as a tool: not only do I journal about my art, I also sketch and paint in my sketchbook. A very cool thing to do is to really explore an artist you admire by looking in their sketchbook; for instance, I've learned a lot by looking at Richard Diebenkorn's sketchbooks. (Title: Richard Diebenkorn: The Sketchbooks Revealed) His daily drawings were everyday observations, from complicated sketches of his studio sink to his cigarette butts in an ashtray, his eyeglasses, combs or a match.
The lesson I learned was to practice drawing common, everyday single objects. I was learning how to see and paint simple objects such as a coffee cup. In fact, lots of coffee cups.
This BobBlast is about how I observe and paint a simple cup. That's the first demo - all black and white, practicing sketching lights and darks on a column (the cup).
The second demo is revisiting an older 30x30 inch coffee cup painting on canvas. I thought it was finished, but after looking at it again - I realized I wanted to rework it - give the painting another chance! My goal was to make it looser, redefine the shapes and change some color to punch it up!
So, sketch what you see in front of you. Your muscle memory recall will be a good resource later - when you paint.

I absolutely love this Blast, Bob! Even had a moment of panic when you pulled out that big brush and started to change what I thought was a perfect painting. You DID change it, and for the better,, surprisingly. Watching you paint with confidence and a sense of fun is inspiring.
