Weekly BobBlast Issue 539
Tools of the Trade, Part Three - Paint
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week’s BobBlast is the third part of a series we are calling “Tools of the Trade.” Over the next few weeks, we will feature the different tools that work for me in my studio. You can expect to see BobBlasts on paint, brushes, drawing materials, art-making tools and whatever else we feel like doing! This BobBlast is all about the acrylic paint I use in my studio.
Paint-It’s what painters use to make a visually lasting impact, as they paint their story. Painting, in all its fearless forms, has been the medium for communicating what the artist wants to say… visually. Originally, muddy earth tones and black ash were the earliest art materials for leaving a mark. Since then, painters have been improving the quality and colors of oil-based and water-based paints.
Today, the best quality of paints have the most pigment, saturation and full, heavy body thickness. With my brush loaded with pigment, I have more options and results.
I have found two grades of artist paint:
Professional Grade
•Higher quality product
•Has more pigment
•Thicker
•Smoother flow
Student Grade
•Costs less (for obvious reasons, like less pigment)
•May not be archival
There is no “perfect paint.” My thinking is… use what you already have and paint the most experimental and avant-garde you can imagine! There’s nothing more to buy and you already have it in stock. Use it up!
Watch me demo with three different types of paint I use in my studio:
•Holbein Heavy Body Artists’s Acrylic Paint
•Holbein Acrylic Inks
•Holbein Acrylic Fluid Paint
I choose Holbein paints for their high quality, pigment load and they dry with the same color intensity as when they were wet.
What would you paint if you knew it would be great? Go paint it!
