So glad you mentioned the 'grades', as I have several medicalese terms, lol. Meniscus, ACL, MCL, and fractured tibia. 7 weeks out, swelling came down after 2, but if I can find out those 'grades' of my injuries, I will have a better idea of whether surgery is likely. I have a full ACL year but wasn’t eligible for surgery. It’s causing me to separate from the Marine Corps, but I am now able to jog up to medium speeds, no restriction upper body lifting, and only mild restriction lower body lifting (no heavy dead’s or squats). I strengthen my legs daily with banded exercises and stretch and normal life is absolutely normal, like nothing ever happened. However, I will never play competitive sports or perform duties as a Marine, so luckily I planned to discharge anyway and start my business. What you intend to do in life determines whether the surgery is needed or not

I have a grade 3 ACL,MCL,PCL tear since 6 month and am back to 100%movement after 5 weeks of 5h daily rehab. Now weight bearing, hiking, running even sitting on my heels for 5 minutes without any pain - after research this seems like a miracle and doctors don't recommend surgery. Although I think I should have surgery due to my physical lifestyle and work (rope access/construction, snowboard etc) I have a surgery planned but might opt out of it - really not sure what the best way of action is for me.l but am worried that my knee will prematurely wear out due to my active lifestyle I want to keep.

Hi Bob n Brad! I have valgus deformity, ,(knock knees), my patella are dislocated, and a Collagen Deficiency Disorder, called Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobe. For 15 years I tried to figure out what my trash can full of symptoms . My first diagnosis was Fibromyalgia. But I didn't stop there, because it's too vague. Anyhow, as time goes on I keep having more symptoms! I found out my patella were displaced about age 45; I could no longer squat and stand. In 2016, age 57, my right knee had a very painful MCL tear. Advice was to brace it and let it mend. Because of EDS it didn't take weeks, it took months,! I had to do stairs several times a day, that became my PT. It never really healed, and my DO recommended s Fulkerson Osteotomy in 2017-18. I went to rehab direct from the operation. It was painful. But I got walking and went home. From there on, I would have sharp pain about every 6 weeks. It took about 4 weeks to heal, and might have 2 weeks of activity, then the pain. I started diagramming the areas, and when I looked up knee anatomy, I realized I had been tearing every ligament near my knee! I also still have cartilege under my kneecaps, that started about 15 years ago. It was supposed to get "cleaned out" during that surgery. I don't think so! So, last summer, 2019, I sprained it again. Then it was a regular thing. A few days ago, I had another problem. My Fibula actually popped out of place! I am trying to figure out what exactly in need to do to pop it back in. I need to not sit Indian-style evermore!! I'm wondering these things: 1. Should I have surgery to replace the tendon? 2. Should I just get a knee replacement? 3. Would cadaver parts be better, or how would I know donated ligament would match my blood type, and would that part get the EDS from me? Sorry this is so long! Not sure how to find a reply! Thank you very much!! Diana Crockett

I tore my PCL in 1996 playing softball. I was covering home/blocking home (natural catcher reaction), and the girl never slid, she just ran into my leg, hit me right below the kneecap and I just dropped. It felt like my knee was falling out of my leg through the back. Went to 2 different doctors who both told me I had a bad bruise. :( No MRI, just xrays to make sure there was no break. I couldn't walk without my leg giving out forward with each step. I rested with a knee immobilizer for 5 weeks and then just a knee brace, gradually exercising my quads and hamstrings. Fast forward 6 years, playing ice hockey, I went knee on knee with a girl and immediately felt like my knee was on fire. Felt like everything under my kneecap was just swelling up. Went to a new doctor, one who worked for local pro sports teams, and he said, yeah the PCL is completely torn (MRI confirmed it) but there's nothing we can really do because the surgery for this has only 50/50 odds of better recovery than when you went in. ACL was stretched but fine. I am double my age now from when my injury occurred, and moved to a warmer climate....less problems with the knee now so I think it healed on its own. Occasionally, when I'm playing softball it will jerk forward moreso than it should and hurt a bit, but nothing major. I did actually fracture my ankle (talus) on the same leg 8 years ago playing softball, stepped in a sprinkler hole running for a fly ball, and tore my anterior talofibular ligament. Not sure if the history of knee issues had anything to do with it causing that amount of damage, but it has taken literally 2.5 years to recover and not have pain. I've had to learn how to walk properly again because I've been compensating for my knee and ankle for so many years. I have a really high tolerance for pain so even when these injuries occur, it takes years for me to actually realize it. The ankle, took 7 years to realize something was not right because it started healing so quickly after the injury despite being swollen. I've learned unfortunately how to live and play in pain.

Long Question: I know this is an old video, but would like your opinion on my injury. Several years ago, I had an acute injury to my knee. I was flying down basement steps with hands full not holding onto the rail. At the bottom I turned to go left, but my toe caught on something left in the floor. In an instant I knew I was going down hard on concrete, so I stiffened my right leg to prevent my knee from hitting concrete. Surprisingly to me my foot was firmly planted on the floor and didn’t budge either. I went down fast and hard and my knee bent BACKWARD and I experienced a very loud and painful snap in the back of my right knee. I couldn’t get up and my son ran to the basement and basically carried me up the steps. The injury swelled and I stayed on the sofa for over a week, gradually the pain subsided. My family begged me to go to the hospital, but I have had bad experiences with doctors and don’t trust them. I recovered some and used a crutch, then cain to get around. After 5 months and hitting a recovery plateau, I went to an orthopedic doctor. I wrote all this down and sent to him before the appointment. His very young assistant (his son?) read thru my note, but skipped over the pop and hurting in back of my knee. He didn’t do any of these procedures to check the ligaments, but pulled on my leg some. I told him that when I sleep on my back it feels like the knee is bending backward, so I have to bend my injured leg to the right to sleep. Then the ortho took an X-ray and told me that I had arthritis and had had it for years and needed a knee replacement. He also refused to discuss how I go the injury and the loud and painful snap. They wouldn’t even look at the red spot still behind my right knee that shows where it snapped and where I still get some swelling and pain. I told him I was not doing a knee replacement, after which he had a temper tantrum and started throwing stuff around. I did a couple sessions of PT, but never back to him. I know this is ligament damage and I’m functional, but standing or walking too long will give me swelling, pain behind the knee and often shin splints on the right lower leg as I use muscles to keep my leg aligned. I also have problems with my knee going out of joint if I walk too fast and sling my lower leg out too far. I am convinced that this is ligament damage and not cartilage. I don not have bone on bone pain. What do you think and how do you pick a competent doctor who will listen to a woman over 50???

My son in an accident at work ( he does live action shows in amusement parks) tore his ACL, MCL, PCL, Posterior Lateral Corner, popliteal artery, poroneal nerve. This happened June 11th, He has had a few surgeries but still no repair of the ACL, PCL, The meniscus was flipped back over. He has a orthotic for his foot drop. My question is can he start weight bearing without the surgery. We are hoping it happens in the next few weeks but he feels like he can put the foot down. But your video seems to say maybe the fluid inside may not want pressure until the surgery is done. We have a good orthopedic surgeon Dr Michael Shepard in Orange Ca., but he is waiting on vascular to give him permission to operate. Can he use pressure?

@@ritikarajput3727 I did get surgery, but several years later. For the most part I was able to function normally with physiotherapy and keeping the muscles strong. It wasn't until many years later that I decided to have the surgery. The surgery is a slow recovery. There are typically at least 3 things you need to be aware of. First, the ligament repair will typically feel good within weeks of the surgery. For me I was able to walk without pain and with full mobility within 3 weeks. However, they typically harvest part of your hamstring tendon to replace the ligament. This takes roughly 3-4 months to fully transform from tendon to ligament. And while you might feel good and strong, your new ligament is not and can very easily be torn. Follow the advice of your physiotherapist. Second, they take part of you hamstring tendon and Thant makes your hamstring very weak. For normal people this can take 9-12 months to feel better. Third, there is always an increase risk of arthritis after the surgery.

went to see the doctor, I was asking if I had patellar tendonitis, or Osgood slatter. He explained to me that it could be my ACL. He did an exercise on me, where he grabbed my left calf with his hand and his other hand on the knee. Then he pulled against him. The left was coming out way more than the right was, which is a sign that the ACL isn't doing its job because it's the ACL's responsibility that your leg and the little dot slightly below your knee (under the fleshy part) doesn't go out of its place (forward) and it did on my left but not on the right. I'm an athlete who normally plays football(soccer) every day. basketball here and there. however, when I tape the fleshy part of the knee it does hurt when I run or play basketball or football. It reduces the pain levels very much when I tape it when I'm doing everything related to football. I can squat on 1 leg usually with the other leg stretched out completely forward and squat, but now the left leg when I squat hurts when I go down to a certain point, but not on the right. Right now I'm waiting for my appointment for MRI where I take pictures of the ligament and stuff, this is maybe taking 2 weeks - 1 month, I'm training push-ups currently but don't know how to train the ACL, or don't become weak when I come back after resting much, he said rest while we wait for your appointment when we will see what we will do. Do these kinds of pains go away? does it heal over time? he didn't suspect that I had torn the ACL, but didn't mention anything about levels 1, 2, or 3. but 100% I'm on 1, or 2.

my 17 year old high school wrestler He had a partial grade 2 LCL tear on upper side. It not detach from bone so Dr said no surgery. He was off from wrestling for 3 months. He just started to drill and wrestle live last week. He tweeked it a little bit on second day but was fine and kept going to practice. Yesterday he was wrestling college wrestler and his knee was getting yanked and tweeked so he stop wrestling cause it was aching/hurting on the side and a little bit on the back on the same side of LCL..He said it felt tender. Do you think he is returning too early to wrestle live, does he probably needs another MRI to see if is healing properly? Dr even gave him a Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to speed up healing. He has fool extension and can bend it normally. He can squat, rdl, deadlifts with no problem. Is just when it gets bend lateral that it hurts him..do u think he should do physical therapy to get it stronger and maybe just do drills amdstead of wreatling live? Sorry for all the question..

I tore my LCL, MCL and ruptured my ACL along with subchonderal fractures to my Tibia and Femur 4 weeks ago. Fair to say doctors don't care, was told to 'go home and see how you go' and 'maybe you just hurt some soft tissue'. I only know the exact injuries due to booking and paying for my own MRI, still not seen a knee specialist yet...due to see one tomorrow....was told waiting time for ACL reconstruction is a minimum of one year wait here in the UK too.... I'm not a happy man currently..

I hurt my knee 2 months ago, and got an MRI. I was told it was a grade 1 sprain. But it still bothers me now and pinches in the back of my leg when I flex my leg as its bent. I'm stuck and want to get back on the field.
