I’m a dancer and I get REALLY bad shin splints. My advice is to do shin exercises before and after every practice and do them regularly. Look up some more but here are some that I do. Sit down in a chair (make sure your foot is flat on the floor) and lift your ball of your foot off the floor (leave the heel on the floor) and lower. Do this a lot!! It hurts like heck but it helps over time. Another one is to get a towel and use your toes to grab and bring it to you. Do a wall sit and do the the same exercise on the chair. Stand up and lift the ball of your foot up and lower. Also from my experience the muscles in your calf cause non stress fracture shin splints so rolling out your calf (if that is what is causing it, it will hurt SO BAD) but it’s worth it because it will feel better over time. Also ice it all the time!! 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off multiple times a day! It helps a lot and take Advil!! Taping it is great! Get KT tape (or off brand! I use therapists choice from amazon and it’s like a lifetime supply for only 29 dollars! Mine is not precut but you can get it precut!) look up a good taping for shin splints! The one where you use one strip down your leg and two across doesn’t work do the one where you cut the tape so that it splits right at the point of pain and then another one across (sorry if this doesn’t make any sense) Calf compression sleeves help a ton too! Also Biofreeze helps a ton!! I tried icy hot but it didn’t work for my shin splints (it works for everything else though 😂) Hope this was helpful!

Shin splints are no joke. I ignore them while I was in high school for cross country. When I went to basic training, my drill sergeants asked who gets them and I didn’t speak up because I didn’t trust them. I ended up fracturing them in airborne school. Again I kept quiet and hid my limp until I graduated. That’s when all this was explained. There were times I didn’t keep up with my stretches for one reason or another and I would refracture them throughout my career. I’m currently trying to get back into shape and I can feel them coming up again, which is what lead me to this video. I never tried a foam roller so I’ll be getting one tomorrow. Thank you for your advice.

@@margiesvanmori I'm 6 feet tall and my weight is generally between 200 and 210 lbs so I go through shoes pretty quickly. I usually run between 100 to 140 miles per month and I can only get about 400 miles out of a pair of shoes before they are wasted. You can try different brands and styles but generally, once you find a pair that doesn't hurt your feet stick with that same brand and model. I have flat feet so Saucony Omni has been my shoe for the past 2+ years. For me, compression sleeves and calf stretching prevents shin splints.

I got shin splints when I went through basic training in the Army; after about 2 weeks they turned into stress fractures. That was painful, in more ways than one, I wanted to walk, but I couldn't. I still tried, and put myself through hell for a week or two more, then finally went on sick call and got put on code for a few weeks. It was strange, because I could get and walk a good distance, say 200 yards or so, then my legs would start to hurt and every step I took after that the pain got worse to the point that I had to physically grab my pant legs and pull my legs forward to take the next step. I could sit down for 5 minutes and they just sort of reset and I could walk a short distance again before the pain started.

I broke my fifth metatarsal at the end of March and was put in a boot for 2 months. Had no pain at all (in my foot or my leg) the whole time I was in the boot but the next day out of it, I suddenly couldn't climb the stairs and had a lot of pain along the outside of my leg, from the hip to the ankle. I also developed shin splints in that leg. From what I can gather it's something called iliotibial band syndrome. I went to PT for it but they were treating it as hip bursitis and the exercises were making it worse. I've been doing some of the things you've mentioned (haven't tried rolling over a tube). I wish they would warn you about this when they put you in a boot and give you some exercises to prevent it. Thanks for the video and exercise suggestions. 👍

In my experience rolling will alleviate pain but it will not 'cure" shin splints. The only cure is reducing load as soon as you start to feel them coming on, use calf guards/compression tape/garments, ice post activity and substitute running for other activities where you can. Once you have full blown shin splints it basically means no running (unless you wanna get fractures or be in extreme pain every step) - ride, swim, circuits, build to walks, then race walking , then running. As far as heel striking goes I always heel strike - I only developed splints after a couple years off running due to another injury and then coming back too soon to frequency and distance I used to do pre-injury rather than a slow build up. In short ti was overuse after under-use and had zero to do with my being a heel striker. I now wear compression guards as a matter of course for any run over 60 minutes.

I am overweight and almost thin. I really want to lose weight and be healthy and feel good I will cry if I can’t workout. I needed this video I’ll do this before my workouts each and every time so I don’t worsen my legs and instead strengthen my shin. I do toe first everytime but I think I overdid my workouts because I’m desperate to get rid of fat. If I stop working out I lose all I have been working hard for and I even backslide and break the routine and that’s what I don’t want.

I know this video is 5 years old and honestly you'll probably not even see this comment to help at this point. BUT I have what I believe are shin splints but the part that confuses me is the part talking about heel striking. Why is it that when heel strike It feels less painful then when I land on my toes. I see a lot of research around trying to land more toward the middle of the foot or balls of the feet but this causes me pain. As an example, I am currently unable to comfortable bounce up and down on the balls of my feet or even do jumping jacks because of the shin pain. Should I still be trying to learn how to run less on the heels even though heel running feels better? Thank you!

These videos are so useful, thanks for this free information! I’m a one foot jumper and was doing a dunking session. My shins were in pain afterwards for the last couple of days and these exercises relieved some of the pain

The roller helped me. I basically walked 6km and 10000 steps in the city, up stairs, ramps and flat streets... in FORMAL shoes. Shin and heels still hurt 2 days after the fact. The roller is helping a lot so far

I’m in high school and play football and track. My schools track is concrete and the sports are back to back so I haven’t had an off season in a couple years. I’ve had constant shin splints for about a year now

Tow walkers. One short leg so you put all the waite on one leg but on the toes when walking .when standing all waite is on that one foot witch now that's when you feel the heel spur pain in that foot so 3 things. Are heel pain left foot shin pain in right leg. And sciatica in both legs and buttocks & thighs.
