When Adam Petty was killed, Judy and Bobby Allison were separated. Judy went to Bobby and said "we need to help them through this ". J&B reunited (and still are) to help the Petty's through their grief! What could be more Godly than to put aside your differences to help others!?

I met Bobby Allison at Heidelberg Raceway in the late 60s. He was my Hero then, and still is today. No other driver could do what Allison could do! Build it, set it up, race it, repair it if necessary, and Win in it! Bobby could do it all.

It’s a miracle he survived. I have a weird feeling that The Allison Family/Alabama Gang was cursed. - Donnie Allison’s career-ending crash at Charlotte back in 1981 - Bobby’s 1987 crash at Dega - Bobby’s 1988 Near-Fatal Crash at Pocono - Davey Allison’s 1992 injuries from bad crashes - Clifford Allison died in Michigan 1992 for Busch Series Practice - Davey Allison died in 1993 from a Helicopter Crash - Neil Bonnett died in 1994 at Daytona during practice

I don't know about cursed but they had an awful run of luck. I guess you'd call it cursed in the sense that a family of 4 different drivers all experienced some level of severe/near fatal/fatal wrecks or in Davey's case a freak accident. I think calling them cursed seems more gentle than accepting they just had such tragic circumstances surrounding some amazing highs.

I had a TBI three months ago from a bicycle accident - NOWHERE as bad as Bobby’s but also had bruising and bleeding in the brain. Like Bobby, I have no recollection of the crash, the ride to the hospital or admittance to the ER. My first memory about an hour post-crash was seeing my wife and the neurosurgeon on my left, and the plastic surgeon on my right stitching my face up. Yet apparently after I regained consciousness at the crash site I was able to give my riding buddies my wife’s number, and speak to a friend who lived 2 doors from the location and came out to see what was going on, AND ask the other riders to take care of my bike……. it’s wild how our bodies protect us from trauma memories!!

He and Davey visited our local upstate New York track the weekend of that race on a Friday night. Accident at Pocono that Sunday. I can't remember if they ran a few laps or not. They did autographs and both my boys got signed pictures. My youngest boy was elated as the sun rose and set with Davey Allison. After leaving the track mid program they got to their plane at a nearby small airport and buzzed the track before heading south. Was deeply saddened to hear of his terrible injuries on Sunday. In my opinion the story of the Allison's is one of the saddest in not only Nascar but just plain sad. Judy divorced Bobby at one point but they fortunately remarried.

For all Bobby's Wheelman greatness, somehow he's still underrated! I know he only won the championship one time, but it was only bad luck that kept "The Leader of The Alabama Gang" from winning 4-5 championship's, nobody ever out drove Bobby Allison & I say that as a lifelong Richard Petty fan! The hardship this Man has endured & the fact he is still kickin just speak's volume's to just how tough an individual he really is 💪 If you happen to read this Bobby, thank you sir, thanks for all the great memories of your epic battle's with my guy Richard Petty, they were truly a sight to behold 🙏

Underrated indeed. It was a different era. In 1967 I saw Bobby tow a car he had built with his own hands into Birmingham International Raceway (1/2 mile track that he cut his teeth on) and beat Richard Petty in a Grand National race (today's Cup Series) using his neighbors and cousins as pit crew. He was a mechanic, engineer, businessman, and of course an expert driver. When he finally got a contract with the big boys (Holman & Moody/Junior Johnson) he really shined, finishing 4th overall in NASCAR wins.

I was there as a kid. This was at a time when scanners were still in their infancy so people basically had to rely on what they saw, felt (it was clear it wasn't good), and the PA announcer /MRN to provide basic updates. The fact it happened in the tunnel turn, literally about a mile away from the main grandstand (which was much smaller back then) made knowing what was going on very difficult. The quiet and then watching the helicopter flying away still resonates 35 years later. I grew up in the Lehigh Valley and wrote Bobby a get well letter.

Anybody ever wonders why they have those goofy-looking extensions off the seat cradling their heads nowadays, this is why. It reduces the potential impact forces in an accident like that immensely, and lowers the chance of head injuries this severe. Personally, I'm really glad we have those sorts of safety devices these days. I applaud the bravery of race car drivers, but I don't want anybody needing blood-squirting holes drilled in their head, going wall-eyed, cross-eyed, and every-which-way-eyed in between while they urinate on themselves from loss of bladder control.
