Everyone sleeping on Bobby Cochran soaring guitar playing. He seems to always be in the pocket , and his phrasing is on point.

it still amazes me that bob got cobham in this band for a while. wonder if he got even split. not that there isn't a lot of talent in the rest of the band but holy shit cobham is a beast.

I played onstage with this band, this exact line-up, at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco about two weeks before this concert was taped. I was covering the opening act that night for MTV News. After they were done, I took out my tambourine and started playing in the wings by Billy Cobham. He heard me, and motioned with his head to come onstage. I did. And I played my tambourine and danced around Cobham for the entire set.

Yes, he is. No offense to Bobby Weir but why did Cobham decide to play with someone who doesn’t have the jazz chops of the guitarists Cobham typically performed with?
@Shaboobuhwogan
@Shaboobuhwogan 10 ай бұрын
@@written12I would assume out of recognition for their mutual influences? And the potential to sell out every show. Also these tunes were probably a breeze for Cobham to play, he essentially gets to relax lol

I got this on vhs a few decades ago, not near the quality as this though. It was broadcast on MTV (back when they actually had music) , but just a few songs (Bombs Away, Lifeline, I Want to Live In America, & Rock In the 80s) . So cool to finally see this show in its entirety! Interesting to realize how much the MTV version was edited- quite a bit, on the songs they used. They smoothed out some ruff spots...

Was never a huge Midnights fan, but I was at this show and had a good time. Great to be able to watch it again all these years later. Billy Cobham shines as always. I still remember being embarrassed/ mortified by the rudeness of the crowd, which booed the opening Greg Kihn Band off the stage.

Great f#$%ing show. Anyone tells you otherwise is a fool. You'll never ever hear this again by this incredible lineup of musicians. Look at the unbridled joy on Bobby's face during this performance...and his vocals...Tells you all you need to know.

Epic show! Don't listen to the wook trolls that pile hate on Bobby & The Midnites- This is an underrated band with unique songs, diverse players, and solid jams! A Bobby & The Midnites reunion would be way more exciting than a John Mayer show...
@PunchandJudyDuo
@PunchandJudyDuo 8 ай бұрын
A lot of these songs were ahead of their time, in style, sound, structure- forerunners of the 90s jam-band sound. With the diverse mix of world music influences, pop sensibilities, jammy extended solos, and clean studio production many of these songs sound a lot like what String Cheese Incident, ekoostik hookah, etc. were doing 10 years later. Long live The Midnites!

You Bobby haters make sick. You all sound like whiny little schoolgirls. You got the right barbie for christmas, but it had the wrong shoes and the wrong dress. Him and Mayer were great when I saw them two months ago ( June 2022). I completely agree these ain't great songs, but its always a treat to hear him sing and perform. The day you're as good of a musician and person as him, I'll pay to watch you too! Why all the hate? Some of the best nights of my life have been watching him and Phil. Both with Jerry (26 times) and without.

How did Bobby Weir assemble such an impressive cast of musicians? I mean, Billy Cobham?!? Then again, this is a dude who at 16 was roommates with Neil Cassidy, he was surrounded by amphetamines, LSD and beatnicks at an age where most of us still had curfews. I mean come on, lord (or oscar wilde) only knows what happened to a handsome 16 year old boy alone in a room with cowboy neil. He joined what would become the highest grossing live rock band at 17 despite barely knowing how to play his instrument. He grew up to become a man who would excite and titilate a generation with his short shorts and hot pink ibanez guitar. I guess it shouldnt be to surpising.
@esparka
@esparka 2 жыл бұрын
1st thing, 2nd thing, 3rd thing & 4th thing here deserve no response; however, Bob did NOT "titillate a generation" w/ your listing of your personal fetish obsessions, with respect to his style of appearance. No, Bob Weir won over *several generations* by being an ever-hardworking denizen of places housing the cutting edge masters of the music scene on an evolving basis. Such talent as: Tom Constanten, Jerry Garcia, Ron McKernon & Phil Lesh, etc., and by keenly being on the cutting edge of technology & the trends of the day as they evolved, too....

1978 roxy show on Sunset In Hollywood was tight, hot, .. bob weir was tight clear vibe ..background vocals were unreal .. The vibes were holding.. Much different than The band at the wolf and rismiller country club show in the 80s. Roxy show was tight loud holding . 80s shows had more open vibe. Secret. At roxy 78 hippie level was changed- slacks And dress shirts were worn by some..by the 80s Izod. From Drewsy

.It's probably not ignorance.I saw hundreds of Grateful Dead shows between 1973 and 1995.Many Midnite's shows as well.I happen to like Bobby in the context of his own material.Case in point,Ratdog were good in '96 when Bob was still playing his songs.I saw Jerry sing Bird Song too many times to enjoy Bob singing it.That's my opinion.Nice use of palpable to make your statement seem intelligent.Forever Grateful.

I have a very open mind.It's not ignorant to have a differing opinion.Just because I don't like what you like doesn't mean my mind is closed.I always check things out before I form an opinion.You can call it ignorance.It surely does not make it so.

Jordan Kuchukian sometimes at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ , when they were filming ? , they would make everyone sit down. I remember the bouncers , yes I said bouncers! , yelling at people to SIT DOWN. I was in the 7th row on 3/31/80 and saw two deadheads get thrown out for dancing and they were right in front of their seats! You had to go with the flow there. If it was a slow song and everyone sat and you were standing you became a target. Saw a lot of shows there anyway.Check out the early Grateful Dead videos from this place and you'll see the people sitting.

I enjoyed this band, love to hear Weir do the covers but it's true that the original song quality is, with a few exceptions, forgettable pop. I mean, plenty of songs this caliber become hits but not with me. Nor with Weir apparently as I doubt he's pulling any of these out for Wolf Bros...or am I wrong?
