He signed with TK Records in Miami. In 1978, after songs for his first album were recorded, executives told him they enjoyed the album but thought it was lacking a hit. Caldwell returned to the studio for two days and wrote "What You Won't Do for Love". TK was mainly an R&B label popular among African American listeners. Executives at the label wanted to conceal that Caldwell was white, so they kept his face off the album cover. When he toured with Natalie Cole to support the album, most of the audience was black and most were surprised that he turned out to be white.[2][3]

All these years I didn't know he wasn't Black, I am a Black woman and I believe in giving everyone their props ,he had Soul and you could see he felt his music Awesome , why he wasn't promoted more, he made this in the 70's and I believe at one point he was under contract with a black record label, but unfortunately the company was faced with a challenge, they knew he could sing, but society Black and White, couldn't handle a White person sounding Black. And Vice versa, if a Black person could sing but sounded White, they wouldn't be promoted as much. Whitney Houston was told she didn't sound Black enough and we know she could sing. Thank GOD Clive Davis pushed forward with her. If you don't believe me read about Bobby Caldwell on wickpedia.But the saddest thing is how he died, we just lost him this year and he proved age is just a number, because he still had his soulful sound. He died because 10 years ago he was prescribed an antibiotic that had partially pulled from the market because it destroys the body. And in 10 years it ravished him, the last five years he was either in a wheelchair or on crutches. Yes if it's our time we are going to go, so he may have died some other way. But he died because a medicine was still on the market, that shouldn't have been. If don't believe this look him up on Wicpedia, he was an Awesome singer!😇🙏☝️

Certain white people were built differently back then : Jon b., Teena Marie , Bobby caldwell, Simply red, hall and Oates, K.C. and the sunshine band, Lisa Stansfield , Michael McDonald , all sound soulful on a few songs .. but for nowadays it’s probably one or none smh
@jodybreezy77925 жыл бұрын
ALL those people you mentioned GREW up listening to Black Music in a time of deep SEGREGATION.... when WHITE people were ostracized for admiring black culture.... it meant more to people like Teena, Bobby, Michael, because they put their lives on the line to do black music EVEN when it didnt seem so to the public. The EXPRESSION black people showed that they admired encouraged them to emulate that same form of EXPRESSION and it shows because their music CANNOT be compared to the new-age blue-eyed soul of today
