I worked with a man in the 90's, who claimed that his neighbours lawn(back home in Glasgow) was sowed from a turf of soil, stolen from Wembley in 77. He claimed, it was sacred, and would not allow anyone to walk on it. Don't know how true any of it is, but it is a great story. Seasons greetings, my auld enemy.

Get this true story....It was just after the third round FA Cup Draw when I was sitting in the kitchen having breakfast before going off to school when my Dad joined me at the breakfast table. "Son", he said, "I had a dream last night that Sunderland are going to win the FA Cup". Well, I nearly spat out my cornflakes! Dad wasn't a big follower of football and would have struggled to know Sunderland had a football team, and I, like most 11-year-old boys of the time, thought I knew a lot! "No chance dad," I said, "you may as well back Gateshead". Then he said something which stunned me: "Well, the dream was so crystal clear, I'm gonna stick a hundred quid on them to win" I couldn't believe what I was hearing! A hundred quid was a large amount of money back then, but what was even more scary (in a good way) was Sunderland were 66/1 in the Third Round! Cutting a long story short, and watching Sunderland progressing through the rounds, I couldn't watch the second half of the final, the final-whistle brought pandemonium to our house, except (typically) dad, who sat there quite calmly and said "I told you they'd win." £6,600 when a three-bedroom detached by us was about five-grand! Happy days.

@@garethrevell5873 Cheers Gareth, I really appreciate that. I have another story about my Dad that you might like, again, totally true: Moving on six or seven years from then, I was about 17 or 18 and my brother was about 20 or 21. Well , my Dad came home from work one night to find me and bro lounging about (in the lounge, funnily enough) and he just came out with..."Right you two, who wants to come and learn Karate with me?" Well, me and bro looked at him (Dad was 49 at the time) and we said "WHAT?" Karate at your age, do me a favour!" or something like that, anyway, the whole thing was forgotten there and then, well it was until two years later when Dad came into the living room again one evening, dumping a sports bag in front of me and my brother who were still lounging about and said..."You remember a couple of years ago when I asked you two if you wanted to learn Karate with me and you said I was too old to be doing things like that?" We said "yeah" he said "look in the bag" so we did...inside was a Karate kit and a black belt attached to it!! He had been going to private lessons (with my Mom's knowledge) for two years and had not only achieved his black-belt but had started his own 'Dojo' at a nearby school!! We were gobsmacked, but so proud. I went on to be taught by my Dad at his own Karate School! RIP Dad.

Getting to the FA Cup final has always been my dream. Watching it in the 1970's with all the build up, the fans on terraces with huge banners, the atmosphere, the whole day looked brilliant but I'm 60 soon and my team haven't made managed it despite several heat breaking semi-final defeats. I doubt it will happen now because they tend to insult us by playing the reserves even if they get to the latter stages.

I understand where you’re coming from in that there’s always going to be more passion in players coming through their academy, but you still see a lot of that. Look at teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool; big teams fielding considerable amounts of homegrown players. A lot of foreign imports have brought the Premier League its finest moments. Thierry Henry, David Ginola, Zola, Didier Drogba, Luis Suarez, to name a few. Players who would’ve died for their clubs when they played for them. If you watch the end of the 1989 LFC v Arsenal game @ Anfield you will see KD shaking hands with his team on the touchline assuming the title was won only for Michael Thomas to score a 92nd minute winner to win the League for the Gooners! The big omen for Sunderland was that their only FA cup win prior to this was in '37, the reverse of '73. Bob Stokoe managed 2nd division Sunderland to this cup win. Three years after this game the similarly named Bobby Stokes scored the winner in the final for 2nd division Southampton, another mildly uncanny coincidence. Cloughie wasn’t a big fan of Bob Stokoe who was playing for the opposition when Clough suffered his big injury on a frozen pitch Boxing Day '62. While Clough lay in agony Stokoe was suggesting to the ref that he was feigning injury.

Not very often one of Sunderland greatest ever strikers was wrong, if he was around Wembley on the day he wouldn't have been so sure. We didn't just take over Wembley, we took the whole of London over. To this day people talk about Leeds massive support & it is & its great support. Compared to what Sunderland are & were capable off getting fans wise they're on another level to Leeds. Sadly consistent failures have been normal for Sunderland since then with a few highlights. Roy Keane will tell anyone the potential & the passion of the club. After he took over, we played Barnsley away in a league game in the championship. The team & Roy came onto the pitch to see both sides & one end of the ground totally rammed full of Sunderland fans something like 12 to 15 thousand for no other reason than winning a few games in a row. We could of done the same on any away match if given the chance of tickets. Down south they don't understand how we can get as many fans. The thing is Sunderland isn't just Sunderland team it's County Durhams team just as Newcastle is Northumberlands team. So both clubs have a full county of support not just their cities. Clough wanted to manage Sunderland he ended up at Forest. If he achieved at Sunderland what he did at Forest. Sunderland would have been a powerhouse to this day. We're far from that but hopefully now with our very wealthy young owner we might just have half a chance.

Clough must have had very conflicted feelings during this interview. He strongly disliked the managers of both teams, Revie because of the type of football Leeds played in the late 1960s to early 1970s, Stokoe because of the cruel jibe he made at Clough when he suffered his career-ending injury while playing for Sunderland in December 1962. As an ex-Sunderland player, he probably felt some allegiance to them still, although he was (briefly) to become manager of Leeds just over a year later. Complicated eh?
