Here's another perspective. Everyone keeps telling me 2023 was some great year in gaming but I didnt experience that. There were many good games...too many but each aaa one I played was broken at launch. Even stuff like spiderman 2 had so many more game breaking bugs than the prior 2. Or jedi fallen order which is still a mess. And the overall quality of these games though tech impressive didnt justify the jank. Even some Nintendo titles launched janky which I'd not seen before. I have a fear that after so many jpeg apology letters from every dev under the sun that industry wide post cyberpunk it's now normal to release unfinished games and the exception to not. And i have greater fears post leaks...that game prices are going up and we might even be charged extra to finish the game we've bought as its cut into parts and sold back piecemeal. 70 is too much for a worthless digital hire. 150 is the death or division of gaming. And we know that money ain't going to the people who have breakdowns crunching our games...:-/

Bobby Kotick leaving will change nothing. It will be business as usual, period. As for The Finals, I feel like an insane person for not enjoying it. I find the gameplay boring, I hate the AI game show voices, all of the customization is hideous, the glasses are unbalanced and the art-style is lame. The multiple teams thing is also stupid, and the lack of a straight up deathmatch mode led to me uninstalling it after an hour or so. But I'm glad people enjoy it. I am definitely looking forward to a Hogwarts 2 though, here's hoping that learning the Unforgivable Curses actually has a consequence this time.

The only thing holding down the original Dragons Dogma was the accessibility and Quality of life. smoothing out those edges would sums up this year RPG of the year since it already has a gameplay that's ahead of its time and the sequel already has cutscenes for better narrative presentation

I loved Hogwarts Legacy. I wasn't even a Harry Potter fan. I just enjoyed it as an open world exploration game. I'm happy it sold so well. Would have loved to see story expansions, but they'll likely just wait and make a full sequel instead.

@@slayer4932 hot take, I don't think RE4 deserved to be nominated for GOTY. Remakes should have their own category and GOTY should be limited to all new experiences that have come out. Not saying RE4 isn't fantastic or that remakes shouldn't happen, but it did already have its time in the spotlight. I think it needs to share that place to highlight all new pieces of work, especially so when it's as great as a year as 2023 was for gamers

The amount of morons thinking that Kotick was an effective CEO these past 5 years, claiming "no he's not a nice guy but he's the CEO" is baffling. Dude ran Blizzard completely into the ground, and let CoD stale into irrelevance. Overwatch was a smash hit, a money machine, and then an endless stream of stupid decisions flushed that potential down the drain, and plenty of them from Kotick and his cronies. Diablo, WoW, CoD, most everything in ActiBlizz's library is either a fading shadow of its former self or a complete trainwreck from mismanagement. Good riddance. Get rid of the other cronies afterwards and maybe one of these teams might be able to make a good game for once.

True that majority of actiblizz is worthless. Suprisingly the only games they ever made in recent years i liked and done well was the crash bandicoot Spyro trilogy remakes crash team racing and crash bandicoot 4. But that’s only because the devs behind the game vicarious visions and toys for bob are really passionate about bringing those franchises back.

Hopefully they are allowed to return to roots after a good clean-out. Blizzard's roots were always in good programming, creative re-imaginings of things that may already exist, and community tools that kept their games relevant. They were never the first, but they were always the best - and became THE name for RTS, Isometric ARPG's, and MMO's for decades. They will probably just continue death spiraling, but there is a small chance they can get back to their late 90's greatness again.

Microcrap has its' own demons. All of them their own making. I have ZERO confidence in microcrap owning so many software companies. Look at their history of buying companies in the past and it didn't go well They ended software/hardware/services companies and did nothing with the IP. Their console dominate will grow at the expense of the PC gaming market like it always has. Look how fast their prior support for say their sidewinder joysticks fell... You have two option for gaming Nintendo and Sony, if you ignore that Valve steam is basically the only one keeping PC indie dev alive, don't count on EPIC.

I personally count on GoG, thank you very much. To me, there's no difference between game renting services of Valve or Epic otherwise. Nintendo do their own Nintendo things - it's a bit of an Apple of gaming. They don't really do anything I'm personally interested in. Sony is definitely the worst out of all of this. If I had to choose between Microsoft and Sony, I would go with Microsoft as a lesser of two evils. Both consoles are equally crappy, though.

Alan Wake 2 got torn apart by them for being 'woke' because one of the main characters was a black woman. The game flopped financially despite being arguably the best game of the year.

He'd run it better in the sense that it would make more money, but it would be considerably worse for the people actually playing games. He'd monetize everything and focus everything on yearly releases of stuff like Halo and Gears of War. Each game would be a focus-tested mess of ideas that they know is going to generate the most money rather than anything made with passion or care.

Honestly... a post coming from someone who uses pronouns standards in his name is always a sign of wokeness. Overwatch 2 crashed because of the infamous greedy live service model and the recent wokeism controversy. I'm sure the woke community sees OW2 as a beacon of hope, but please leave body type 1 and 2 and neo-pronouns out of our games and concentrate your development resources where it matters. Woke culture has only added confusion to the already established scientific study of human anatomy and suddenly we're facing 100's if not 1000's of new genders thanks to these people.

Part of me isn't shocked that Hogwarts sold like gangbusters. Who doesn't want to go to magical boarding school and kick off their life adventure in a fantastic other world? But the part of me that actually played this game is shocked/horrified/insulted by its critical and financial success. Calling the game atrocious would be unfair, since the game has barely any gameplay to speak of. It's just a massive never-ending collectathon for little blurbs of trivia and non-existent rewards. Other than that you wander an empty world with like 4 enemy types and engage in crappy cumbersome combat. I forced myself to keep playing well past the point that I could refund it, but eventually I was so bored and disgusted by the game that I couldn't even hate-play it to completion. It just wasn't worth it. It was that bad.

It's a pretty good game. It did very little that was original, for the most part it's a mix of Dragon Age Origins and Breath of the Wild, so it's certainly not bad. But it's a videogame for non-gamers.

@@YourPalHDee It didn't really have much in common with Dragon Age or BoTW. It was much closer to your standard, Ubisoft clone open world. It reminded me a lot of Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

I think Microsoft should’ve made Kotick the head of Xbox. He’s clearly more equipped to run a company like that than Phil Spencer or at least Matt Booty. He may be a jerk, but we’re talking about massive corporations - being a good dude is one of the last priorities on the list.
