brilliant point by bobby to say the theme is the new owners of star wars saying to everyone that "hey, anything can happen, it's not all going to go the way you expect".
@trencher7

Exactly. It's a nice way of saying "Oh you were expecting something good ? Nope!" The problem is anything did happen and the writers chose the lamest scenes. We get animal activism and the evils of rich people instead of learning about the Knights of Ren. Huge wasted opportunity this movie was.

I still don't understand why this wasn't perfectly clear to fans after seeing TLJ. RJ as the director couldn't have made it any clearer....well maybe he could have. It was spelled out for us 1st by Kylo Ren when he reaches out his hand out palm up....very important that the hand was palm up.....to Rey and says forget the past, the Jedi, the 1st order etc......let's start a new etc. Why the hand being palm up is important is that had it been palm down it means bow down to me......palm up means come along with me Kylo even says that. Luke Skywalker brings it all home by saying this is not going to go the way you think. If RJ would have had someone use a Jedi mind trick on saying.....this is not the Star Wars you are looking for would that have been clearer? Yes but that would negate leaving the past in the past and moving on.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this anywhere but I find it very relevant. The stuff on Canto Bight for me really was about Poe. Leia spends the whole movie trying to teach Poe how to lead instead of just being a hero. The entire Canto Bight mission was Poe’s idea and it absolutely failed in every way. He has that moment where he thinks Finn and Rose didn’t make it and he literally loses hope at that point because in his hotshot mind there was no other plan besides his that could possibly be in play. So after failing twice, the 3rd time is the charm for him on Crait where he realizes the need to retreat and find another way. Without the failure of the dreadnaught asssilt and the failure of the Canto Bight mission, I don’t think Poe makes that call on Crait.

It def had an importance for Poe's character. Absolutely right. Tho Canto bight was arguably more important for Finn's arc. There he meet DJ who symbolizes the devil on Finn's shoulder that tries to teach him to live a selfish lifestyle, and there's Rose who's the angel and wants him to fight for the light.

@@Yoda-wf6bu I agree it had a huge impact on Finn as well, I just think it had a really strong impact on Poe as well. I think it’s such a well done piece of storytelling because it is the catalyst to developing two different characters. Pretty dope in my opinion.

Latham99 - Uhuh ~ Yeah! The perfect amoral character for the entitled millennial target audience to sympathise with, you mean? Moral relativism is cancer to Star Wars because Star Wars IS built on mythology and fairytale! It's those good versus bad decisions that give it the dynamism and make it ageless and timeless. Rian Johnson is writing nihilism and doesn't understand the genre one bit!

Beware with the broom kid. People are gonna start making crazy theories again, but the movie seemed to show him just as symbol of things to come, of hope rekindled, new generation rising. It wouldn't be surprising if we never see him again, or he ends up being just a background character. After reading the comments from "fans", I think JJ is better off doing the same thing he did with Force Awakens. Just rehash Return of the Jedi and just for good measure make Rey's horrible dad end up being boba fett. Then start with the first order being in a state of civil war with military leaders not following Kylo and that a new leader, named Thrawn, has taken over and is building a massive new weapon. This way everyone can predict everything and be able to comment online about how awesome they are for having known the movie's main plot all along!!!

It is clear you didn't actually read any comment, you are just venting for the sake of it, no one is saying they want everything to go the way they want, we just want something instead of literal nothing. There is a relationship between Star Wars and the fans, they acknowledge that fans of Star Wars has thought of, theorised and discussed huge amounts of lore and speculation and thus have alot of expectations, but instead of upping us with more intriguing lore, they've decided to tell us all we did is literally for nothing, Snoke is nothing, Rei is nobody. All the canon that is set up in the expanded universe felt like nothing but a marketing ploy to drive hype and push us to watch movies, which then tells us that everything we cared for is nothing, the expanded canon and lore does nothing for the movies, no pay off and everything old is cast aside.

The problem with what they did with Snoke and Rey's parents is that J.J Abrams in the Force Awakens built them up to be very important. Why else would they show that flashback of Rey as a kid. And Snoke was built up as to be more powerful then Vader and the Emperor! and they kill him off like hes nothing.... I am starting to think Ryan Johnson decided to ignore much of The Force Awakens and decided to do his own thing.

I agree woth Bobby about Leia using the force. It was so beautiful. And his point about Anakin wanting to bring back life is so poinant. It really hints at the level of power Leia could have had had she chosen a Jedi life. If her force powers had been used the way Kristian said, with her using it to move rubble, it would have been generic as hell. And it's already done with Luke in the very same movie.

I don’t think Leia brought herself back to life, I think she simply shielded herself with the force. You can see space debris floating around her as though there’s some Forcefield protecting her. Also, Benecio DelToro’s character is named DJ. It stands for “don’t join,” which is what he tells Finn (and is also written on his hat in Aurebesh).

I seriously don't get why rey's parentage is so important. I thought maz kanata had put an end to it when she told rey to focus on what's ahead and stop looking for who she is in her past. basically telling her: forget about it. it's not important. the same was repeated in this movie and still fans go on and on about it.
@davidmayberry3190
@davidmayberry3190 6 жыл бұрын
Ricardo Silva It's a big deal because both movies make it a big deal, they ask the question repeatedly. I can almost guarantee that JJ Abrams had completely different ideas about her parentage but they were abandoned in favor of her parents being "nobody's" just so they could have broom boy at the end and explain how in the future they can make a million more movies with new force users who aren't Jedi, it's all about the next trilogy, and the next paycheck. If they had just brought up the question once and then not again ok we probably could handle it, or if they had answered the question quickly, but they purposely let it hang out there as a Abrams "mystery box" for fans to endlessly debate, and then re-asked the question over and over throughout TLJ only to have a completely anticlimactic answer, that's why people are disappointed. Plus you mention Maz? How about a few other scenes with Maz like when she says "I've seen these eyes before" hinting that she has the same eyes as one of her parents. And why did the Skywalker family light saber call to her? Why did she have a whole vision when she touched it? Even the light saber was given an unceremonious death in TLJ.

I really liked the way Luke came at the end. Not as himself But the legend people thought he was. He projected the myth version himself The one that can face armies. It calls back to the start where he says "what did you think I was going to take on the 1st order on my own with a laser sword." He learns the old ways are unnecessary, But he can make way for the new hope. He stares out in the vision of twin suns as he did when he dreamed. And he felt that dream again as he died I thought it was a really well done ending for luke.

Everything Luke does is to taunt Kylo and goad him into confronting him. Luke exits the force projection hurt but rights himself and seems to heal but passes anyway leaves me thinking - he's ready for the next horizon. I thought it was beautiful and although the Luke fan in me wanted to see him be the legend and crumple star destroyers, I completely get the story. I get the failure, as an old person now having grown up with Luke staring at horizons I choked up when I realized I can now identify with Luke even more. Passing is normal and we're prepared. We hope for our children to surpass us, teach them about our strengths, success and failures.

Olly George I wanna know what Luke's backup plan was had that scene not played out as he intended, especially since he did such a poor job conjuring up his force-hologram thingy (he gave himself the lightsaber that Rey and Kylo just broke, his footsteps didn't create dust clouds, he made himself look a lot younger). I mean honestly, I don't even see why the FO decided to just stop in their tracks instead of continuing the march towards the base. But whatever, it's insane to even speculate on this foolishness.

Seeing her take out guards with what seemed like short training just seemed unbelievable. 2. Where are the Knights of Ren? 3. They missed many opportunities to kill off Leia honorably. 4. Don't like how they killed off Ackbar. 5. Flying thru space Leia seemed out of place. 6. Flynn and Rose going off in an adventure. 7. Rose- I really didn't care about her, her love line, or that kiss. 8. Snoke- hate that he was killed off without feeding us a back story.

So you think Rian and disney looked at all the theories and said let us do the opposite or not fulfill any theory out of spite? Why not decide ahead of time where you are going narratively and not let others predictions dictate where you are going. Btw we as an audience did not start theorizing. TFA was setup with several questions leading to speculation. Now I basically do not care cause it had no predetermined outcomes

All the scenes with Rey, Luke, Kylo and Snoke are great. One of my favorite scenes is the throne room with Snoke, Kylo & Rey too. I love all the Force stuff, the struggle between light & dark, conflicted characters & relationships, and lightsaber fights... and all of that came together in that scene, so that was great. Generally all the twists & turns worked for me, from Snoke's death & Kylo continuing on the dark path to Luke's final stand (I like the new Force powers they introduced), even the twists with Del Toro's character. Very cool reunion moments between Luke & Chewie, Luke & R2, Luke & Yoda and Luke & Leia. Most of the humor was fine too. But yeah, the Canto Bight scenes were the weakest for me too. I don't mind the storyline itself, but I think the execution and details of the mission is lacking. That could've been done in a more clever way. Also it would have been good if the fight with Phasma would been a bit harder for Finn. I guess Episode 9 might pick up a couple of years after The Last Jedi and start with Leia's funeral where (now) General Poe Dameron is giving a speech... Rey has received a couple more lessons from Force ghost Luke and has been training a group of Force-sensitive teenagers (Broom Kid among others) while Kylo has his Knights of Ren on his side (a few surviving Luke students who believed Kylo's story about Luke).

It was made abundantly clear in The Last Jedi that Rey and Kylo are headed for a love match of sorts. Rey will end up pregnant with Kylo's child, carrying on the Skywalker line that way, the first by two Force-sensitive parents, and more than likely, will be the chosen one who is the one to fulfil the prophecy who will bring balance to the Force. The issue of Rey's lineage was not addressed in Episode VIII and I'm still certain she'll be revealed to be Kenobi's granddaughter as the surprise in IX in 2019, with the Obi Wan movie coming out in 2020 to show the audience how this happened. My bet on the title for IX is "Prophecy of the Force."

I'm with Ken. Holdo's jump to lightspeed was absolutely breathtaking. I had the same reaction both times I've seen it: the audience gasping. Probably the most iconic scene, visually, in Star Wars since Luke staring at the twin sunset in 'A New Hope'.

Grayden - Great effects...pis poor writing! That should have been Ackbar doing the heroics and Holdo left to help command the rebel forces and give her some character time with Poe...much more interesting! But no...Holdo is a woman and thus nobly sacrifices herself to save the rebels...and then has that immediately undermined by Rose stopping Finn from doing exactly the same thing at the cost of all her comrades lives? She had no idea that the Millennium Falcon would come or that Luke Skywalker would buy them time to escape...so her actions against Finn were just DUMB!

I loved the movie. I love newness, the writing, the emotions it invoked in all of us all of it. It made so many of us sit and think about what just happened to "our" universe after we exited the theator and went back to our lives. Any movie that can have that big of an impact on you as a person in the real world is fantastic. I like most that we, as the audience, were added to the movie. There were so many ways it spoke to us without anyone even realizing until after it happened: "this isn't going to go the way you think"...."let the past die..even if you have to kill it"..." it lures you with what you want most". The movie spoke to us as an audience and we didn't listen. As Master Yoda would say "Never our minds on where we are, or what we are doing" "Cannot see what is right in front of our nose" We wanted to badly for our theories to be correct, to predict what was going to happen, who was who and what was what. We took the bait from the trailer saying "oh, now I for sure know what is going to happen" then going through each scene in our minds as we watched, waiting for that perfect moment for our theories to be justified that never came. "The signal has been received in multiple locations, but, no response". The audience were heard, the audiences were considered, but the writers did not come to our aid. We were left helpless as they took Star Wars to a new place. A place we did not plan on going, a place we did not chose to be, a place we all may not want to be, but a place where Star Wars still survives and will continue to go on. A great parallel to the resistance at the end of the film. This movie, and all Star Wars movies take us takes us to a galaxy far, far away the moment we see those big yellow letters fill up the screen. We leave this world for the 2.5 hours it takes for the film to come to a close. That is why I love Star Wars and rewatch these movies time and time again. The Last Jedi will be no exception. It was a fantastic film that has added more depth, more value and more story to the Star Wars universe.

Scott Margetan: Would've been nice if Rian Johnson showed us the Knights of Ren in that Jedi temple flashback then. And here's the weird thing: so I guess Episode IX will have a ton of force ghosts to train Rey? Or is she going to magically become a Master Jedi after reading a few books? See, this is why we have problems w/ this movie. It doesn't appear that they sat down and worked all this stuff out beforehand. But hey, maybe I'm wrong and J.J. will resolve a lot of these things in IX. We'll see.

What the movie felt for me is that they acknowledge that fans of Star Wars has thought of, theorised and discussed huge amounts of lore and speculation and thus have alot of expectations, but instead of upping us with more intriguing lore, they've decided to tell us all we did is literally for nothing, Snoke is nothing, Rei is nobody. Instead of bringing back the original heroes and let them have a last adventure together, we instead have burnt out shells of characters die out one by one, literally everything in the past has to die, so that they can cash in on new original IPs. I was about to mourn when Leia seemingly dies but then they did a double take and completely pulled me out of the moment, all I can think now is how long are they going to drag out her death and put Leia and Carrie Fisher to rest? All the canon that is set up in the expanded universe felt like nothing but a marketing ploy to drive hype and push us to watch movies, which then tells us that everything we cared for is nothing, the expanded canon and lore does nothing for the movies, no pay off and everything old is cast aside, I feel that all the time I spent on Star Wars has been a waste of my time and money. Because of this I no longer feel attached to Star Wars and have no anticipation for any new Star Wars media.

My problem with the fandom as a whole is TFA NEVER implies that Rey herself doesn’t know who her parents are. She just wants them to come back to Jakku.
