Aside from the obvious admiration for Bobby Van, I'd like to add two things. Tremendous stress on his spine for all that jumping, can you imagine? Also, the clip was filmed in 4 continuous camera shots, which was amazing work for that day technology, especially the last shot from above to close-up. Cameramen so rarely get any recognition. It was staged so great with all the extras, cars, bicycles and the dog -- what a fantastic piece of cinema.

Glad you mentioned the long takes. I do love the final shot, where it reveals the entire neighborhood was following him like the Pied Piper, all the way to the final curb.

Ditto on mentioning only four takes and the camera work. I’ve heard it took Van six months to recover from this. After seeing it, I can believe it. Not enough people know how strong a dancer he was. He was in the movie version of Kiss Me Kate, sharing screen time with none other than Bob Fosse. More than holding his own. And with Fosse, that’s saying something. Plus he was married to the scrumptious Elaine Joyce. He did all right for himself, didn’t he?

It really is unfathomably insane, how incredible this is. Most people couldn’t do this as well for 10 seconds let alone as long as Bobby did it here. It is mind blowing.

This is an amazing scene. This is right up there with Fred Astaire dancing on the walls and ceiling scene. Bobby Van had such a young and friendly face. Sad, that he died of a brain cancer.

Thank you for uploading this. It's wonderful the way he keeps the rhythm even though he's doing nothing but strenuous jumping which really fatigues the muscles quickly. I don't remember seeing this, but I probably have on " That's Entertainment. " He always reminded me a lot of Donald O'Connor in his dance style and smile. Very fun dancer to watch, with so much vitality. This was a joy to watch and they did a great job coordinating all the complicated elements all timed to perfection. Back then people had to actually do the things on the screen. No CGI then. LOL

Agreed. I bet each shot took many days of staging and rehearsal. Add those hops to the final take here. He was young. Pain was part of the art, like ballet. The film is the final product. Marvellous.

This 'version' of the dance number was taken from the film "That's Entertainment" the 1974 compilation film, so I would assume for the purposes of that film, it was truncated. You can hear Gene Kelly doing the intro for the segment at the beginning. So it's not taken from "Small Town Girl" itself.
