I have a 2000 Johnson 150HP that having the same issue with no spark on one complete side of the engine. I have replaced the spark plugs and wires, the power pack and optical sensor, and all the coils. Still have no spark on the same side of the engine. (left side when facing the engine standing at the rear) Is there something else I should check. I bought a new stator to replace but now I'm just throwing parts at it.

It sounds like a ground is not connected shutting off the bank. There are three wires going to the shift interrupt switch. One positive and two negative. I would try and figure out if something is wrong there. Or the switch itself has shorted out.
@keneykkk3 ай бұрын
It in fact the shifter switch. I did change the power pack, optical sensor, coils, wires, and plugs. Did not fix the problem. I was about to change the stator before I came across your other video about the shifter switch being an issue. As soon as I removed the ground wire all three of those cylinders had spark. I wish I had found that video first before I spent all the money on that other stuff. But a good lesson to learn.
@bobbygfl3 ай бұрын
Having all that stuff replaced is probably for the better anyway! Such a great motor as long as you keep the oil mix. Mine is still going strong. It’s a 1996.

Good video. I have a 96 150 Johnson Oceanrunner. It runs great, plenty of power, idles well, but has a random miss, any mid to high throttle position. Its like someone turning off and on the key for a split second. Any ideas. Thanks.
@bobbygfl3 жыл бұрын
Sounds electrical. I’m not a mechanic but the power pack controls the spark, coils amp up the power, optical sensor controls the timing. I’d start with power pack. It’s an easy swap.

i know this is a old video but i have the same motor and had the same symptoms so i changed the power pack and starts up good but will not idle i have checked the shift switch rebulit the carbs new powerpack new optical sensor new plugs the only thing left that could keep it from running would be the stator any ideas?
@bobbygfl Жыл бұрын
I would rebuild the carbs again. My problem was a tiny piece of plastic curled around one of the high-speed jets from cross threading it. Do a complete bowl replacement.

I'm having the same issue, The thing is a few years ago when I bought the boat I couldn't get it to start and did some shot gun trouble shooting and started replacing things. Well I replaced the power pack because I didn't know how to test it but my starting issue was my optical sensor. Well now I have one bank not working / spark so I thought it was the power pack so i used my good know power pack that I replaced for know reason and it switched sides, from the side that was working is now not working. I've swapped them out a couple of times and with one power pack one side is bad and with the other its bad. Not sure if i should buy a new one
@bobbygfl3 жыл бұрын
Try the shift interrupt switch. I made a video on this. If it goes bad half the cylinder banks will go out.

I would check the shift interrupt. I have a video on this if you search my channel. The shift interrupt switch shuts off the left Bank to make for easier shifting. Seems like it could be that

I have a 1999 Johnson looks like the same power head you got there. did this fix your issue? the left head/bank is not firing on mine at all. my symptom was not building power, would not get on plane, would idle rough, ultimately overheated, because of all the strain on right head/not enough power to properly operate the water pump at full capability. I pulled plug wires while running and did not change anything, so I pulled plugs and no spark, test light does not show anything either. I assume you did not need the optical sensor then? thanks a lot for the video.

So I’m having the same problems and I have that exact setup. Can you show me how to test my power back to make sure? I have a meter what should I check?
@ct17624 жыл бұрын
shift interrupter switch shuts down a bank of cylinders (port or starboard depending on year) so it could be a cable out of adjustment or going to ground. get a DVA adapter for your multimeter and start testing the stator . there is no direct test for powerpack as it's a process of elimination. check ground kill wire at the pack to see if shorted to ground.
@bobbygfl6 ай бұрын
I’m not sure how to check voltage or if it’s worth the effort to do so. Just replace the power pack and coils would be my advise

Hey, I have the same exact motor as you. I've had it since 09. Rebuilt the carbs twice (last time was in the summer along with spark plugs). I've always had this on/off knocking. It's not the foot it's the power head. But I doubt it's the cylinder because it's not constant and doesn't show any signs to be the cylinder. It starts at around 4000rpm when the boat is in gear. Doesn't do it in idle. And it's not in a pattern it's at random and uneven when it does it. It will always do it if I go from 5000 down to 4200 until the engine slows down and the boat reaches the speed the engine does at that rpm. Any ideas? I am going to check out the power pack and make sure all my cylinders are firing. Also does your have this sneez in idle every now and then? Mine does.
@ct17625 жыл бұрын
Yes the loopers will all have a slight lean-sneeze at idle, but when you did the carbs did you also clean out the throttle bodies? Also, no mention of doing the link n synch procedure... gotta make sure all throttle butterflies are COMPLETELY CLOSED at idle. Sounds like you might have a timing issue or weak magnets under the flywheel.

Rebuild the carbs first.

Great video. I purchased a 1998 90hp Johnson OceanRunner. I replaced the power-pack and just ordered an optical sensor. It doesn't have any spark and was told that will take care of the issue?
@ct17625 жыл бұрын
I know this is super old, but it could also be your senor and/or charge coils on the stator which is why you need the FACTORY service manual and a cheap DVA adaptor/multimeter combo to pinpoint. the last thing you want to do is blindly replace parts!
