Well after 3 years of doing this I have botched my first surgery!! The info I have given in this video is mostly true except... The compressor WILL compress ALL frequencies even below where the detector is set. What the HPF does is keeps the compressor kicking in when your kick drum/low end hits. SO...the HPF removes the frequencies from the compressors sidechain detector so frequencies below the HPF setting won't trigger the compressor to start compressing. I was always confused at this because the compressor never showed GR with the low end so I thought nothing was compressed below the detector. TODAY I was the student and YOU all that commented were the teachers. I'm always grateful for the comments and special thanks to Dan Korneff and Mike Clute for their tutoring! There is still VERY good info in the video so please watch and I'll see you soon. A bit embarrassed, Doc

Fam!!! you saved my life with this explanation! Even if you made mistakes you were able to show me in an easy way how to fix the main problem with ALL my mixes… the Muddy mix!!!! Thank you! I’ve been listening to every tutorial and explanation for years and every so called expert weren’t able to help me with the ONLY thing I needed help fixing! So thank you 🙏🏾 liked and subbed

The language you use makes it sound like you’re describing multi band compression rather than high pass filtering the side chain. The high pass filter on the side chain simply means that low frequencies are not triggering the compressor’s detector. Other (higher) frequencies are triggering the compressor and on a broadband compressor like the fg-grey that means that *all* frequencies are getting compressed.
@PrimalNote
@PrimalNote 10 ай бұрын
That was my understanding of that feature on a master bus compressor as well.
@DarrellSt.Blaine
@DarrellSt.Blaine 10 ай бұрын
@@PrimalNote yeah, a better way to describe side chain filtering is that (when using a high pass filter) the low frequencies have less influence on how much compression is being applied (to the entire frequency spectrum).
@mihneazoican2479
@mihneazoican2479 10 ай бұрын
Exactly what I was going to say. Let’s say you’re dealing with a solo kick - it’s gonna be compressed as a whole, but only the “click” will trigger it, not the high-energy boom, thus resulting in.. less compression, usually
@DarrellSt.Blaine
@DarrellSt.Blaine 10 ай бұрын
@@mihneazoican2479 right. And if we’re talking about compressing the master bus a prime example of its usefulness would be to keep the kick from causing the compressor to pump too much (though in some genres kick driven pumping/sucking bus compression is desirable).

This was a poor tutorial. I’m not sure if he doesn’t understand the function of the side chain filter, or if he just didn’t explain it properly.

I think these are two different things. The High Pass Filter (it’s not a High Pass Frequency thingy) in the compressor only controls the side chain so that the low end does not trigger the compressor. All of the frequencies, including the low end, are still compressed. It has no effect on the compressor frequency range. Adding an EQ before the compressor does eliminated the low frequencies, son they aren’t even passed to the compressor. So I think you are still not understanding how this works.

Great info! Have you ever tried Taking the Sub mixes of Drums Bass and Guitars then run that to a another Bus and Apply a SSL Bus Compressor EQ Limiter etc. Then Take the Vocals Submix and Send that to another Bus and Apply a SSL Bus Compressor EQ and Limiter. Then Take those two Submixes to the master Fader. It's a cool trick I learned from someone. This allows the Vocals to sit out Front without being effected by the Music bed. But it still can be done the traditional way. Rock on Always enjoy watching your videos.

I have to say this is explained in a very poor way Bob. The compressor is not a multiband compressor and when it triggers it compresses across the full frequency range. Adjusting the high pass filter changes the detection only so that low frequencies don't trigger the compressor. But once the threshold is reached by any frequency the compressor will trigger - and across all frequencies. It should be clear that this is not multiband compression.
@xanderpills
@xanderpills 9 ай бұрын
Yep, this is exactly what I though. You're simply not allowing the low end of the spectrum to trigger the compression circuit. It's not necessarily leaving those frequencies uncompressed, although I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case in some compressors. If you wanted the above to happen, you would have to split/route your bass elements and "everything else" separately, then compress the "everything else"-buss. Or use a multiband compressor that sounds good, although they're not usually made for sounding heavy on a master bus, more like a correction tool. P.S. : Some DAWs allow more extensive routing on the track level, making the abovementioned easier.

That's not the way it works. The HP on the detector circuit eliminates everything going through beneath a certain frequency ON THE DETECTOR. The frequencies are still being compressed. It just helps your compressor to not react as much to the subs. You don't want your highs ducking insanely every time your kick drum hits.

If you high pass most of your tracks in your mixing process properly and you're careful with your low-end tracks too, should you have to worry about low-end crap coming into your master bus? Or will low-end crap come in to the master bus anyway through the summing process even if your individual tracks are all properly EQ’d?

"There ya go, I didn't understand that" yeah you still don't understand what the side chain HPF does on a compressor. I'm not sure that you said anything of value in this video unfortunately. And I usually like your videos but this is all just complete misinformation that will send people down the wrong path.

@@DarrellSt.Blaine There are literally hundreds of videos on the topic of side chain filters. They simply filter the audio passing through the side chain of the compressor which affects what will trigger the compressor. Note that the filter is on the side chain, not in the audio path and it does not affect what passes through the compressor without being compressed. What has been described is some kind of multi-band compressor as if the HPF splits the band going through the compressor and then sums the signals. I also am not sure why you would ever want to put a 30hz filter and cut out all the sub lows from a dance mix. Like I said, I usually like these videos but with 36k subscribers, some more research should have been done on this topic.

The video is still useful information. Using an eq before the compressor achieves Bobby's goal, which the sidechain HPF does not achieve.
