the worst thing with Q is that it can change the sound of the instrument. VH played together in the room most likely

I need this song- great job! What’s the name, and who’s it by?

Good ideas. My first instinct for an even bigger section would have been a pedal tone at the top holding down the root, sustaining over the chord changes. Some pad or synth keeping the tonic always makes things sound cool. You could even side chain a gate to make the note pulse rhythmically like a 90's EDM/trance beat.

Bob, I'm absolutely knocked out with all your lessons. Absolutely amazing techniques really clearly explained. Phenominal! Thank you!

Hey Bobby, surprising video. Thanks! Hey you should do a little showcase video of some songs you've been working on and using as examples. I mean, once the songs are out and you can share the final version with vocals etc. Would be nice. Cheers!

Automate the sub bus going into the master bus to push an extra .5 db on the downbeats.

Yes. In mix mode for sure but this is in programming/arrangement mode so I can’t use that technique.

A few other ideas that might work: Enter high droning strings a half beat before the section. Modulate a half or whole step!

In an earlier video, you demonstrated the power of adding very focused (even non-musical) sounds underneath drums to bring them forward in the mix. For example, you added a heavily gated high-passed whack to a snare drum to give it just the right amount of definition to cut through the mix. Taking that approach a step further, I started doing what seems to be what you’re advising here. For example, I’ll add a foot stomp from a percussion pack behind a kick drum, and it makes it bigger in a way that layering more kick drums cannot. There is great power in layering percussion instruments to widen instruments in the mix.

Great video...., BUT...remember, that it is all in the dynamics...., so if a producer wants to get it bigger...,from the top.... then strip it down..to the bare bones..and start to build...., or else your contribution will get lost....
@gisellechacon70816 күн бұрын
It's really surprising how much energy the right percussion can add especially when the track is really packed full and moving already. Great example of effective percussion really bringing it home. ☺️

Every hit moves forward with mini hooks. Sing a third or octave higher, phrase on 1 +, double up phrases to steamroll it into a big chorus. Push & Pull.

The technique and point of the video is solid... good one. I would have liked to hear the verse split; I missed the space. And going from space to losing the gap would in itself build momentum. As it ended up, we lost the Beavis and Butthead head shaking air guitar and now it's just wall-to-wall vocal lines. I had a hard time telling the sections apart a bit on first listen, actually. Anyway, nice singing and playing. Thx for sharing!

Do not agree. The new version feels rushed to me. Or like a pre-chorus. But I’m old, I don’t get bored by a good verse.
@rocnathan12 күн бұрын
First version is classic The Sweet, for the second version they brought in Jeff Lynne. :-) Shame they don't give you time to build your verse anymore, but that said, the second version is tighter and more fun. Would love to hear the whole thing! And I totally agree - if in doubt, cut out every other thing, and most of the time, surprisingly, it'll work just as well or better.

When I wrote a new album back in 2000, I imagined standing on a stage before a huge crowd... Then I wondered what do I have to play to entertain them. This is a great way to write rock songs, imagine the crowd! BTW, do you know the "Invisible Counselor" technique? Where you meditate and imagine having a personal meeting (or songwriting session) with your hero's alive or dead. Magically, they will start to advise and help you. It's amazing! Google it.

Really good improvement to the arrangement! I love the dirt on that lead vocal. Would you like to share the chain for the lead vocals? The whole song sounds great!

Thanks so much! The dirt on the vocals is the Korneff Talkback Limiter in the vocal chain at about 30% wet.
