Not huge diff imo. I liked it non auto tuned though.

Good rule. Been following it for years without knowing it had a name. Really is so much easier just to try something rather than argue about it....or wind up not trying it and never knowing if the idea woulda made it better.

That thwack sounds like shit. But noise is an old trick, lots of people have been doing it since the 80s at least.

Would you get that similar result that you mentioned before about singing 10 feet away from the microphone by turning your head away from the microphone and try to record yourself singing while your voice is away from the microphone(or your head not facing at the microphone)?

No it would be different.

Great vid. SSL gate trick in combination might add to it (bury threshold, fast-medium release -- parallel). Love the spike sample in the Bogren Digital samples, adds well to most regular samples/real snares.

For the love of all that is holy why would anyone want to do this? What made Diamond Dave amazing is destroyed by "perfection". A big reason that most modern music sucks now is this kind of editing.

Hi Bob. Very cool stuff! Sounds like Kevin Gilbert production (he did a very cool solo album with Nick D'virgilio). Like the song, yet we don't hear everything

Awesome! Love it! I did this a wee while back in a caravan, only about 5ft away from the mic but it did give some very cool character to the overall bgv.. great to see the pros do it too!!! I'll keep experimenting!!! Thank you Doc! Have a fantabulous week!!! Bless 😎🙏🕊️✨👼🤗

Thank you, thank you for this. This is exactly the "smack" I was looking for in the snare, and I've often heard this in latest Starset's albums mixed by Dan Lancaster. I think he's doing this very trick on the snares.

Love your videos. Thanks for breaking things as well as you do. I was in college studying recording engineering back in the late '80's - and we were constantly trying to replicate Mutt's production tricks with analog gear! It's fun 35 years later to have so many of his secrets revealed by you. Cheers!

Do you normally do the compression and delay on the busses? I get conflicting information about this. Spoke to one Engineer who does his major compression and eq only on individual tracks with perhaps only light bus compression and maybe some air with a pultec on the bus. I am going to start doing my reverbs and delays on the vocal bus rather individual tracks. It kinda makes sense as they would all appear in one room. Thanks.

Wow the tuned version sounds stale as hell. It literally sounds like singing into a pipe to prevent the sound waves from ever being free to vibrate.

Hey, I'm new to your channel. I'm not trying to be a dick, but the quality of the audio recording of your voice at the beginning of the video-boomy, echo-y, recorded-in-an-untreated-room-with-a-tile-floor-y-kind of makes me think that anything you have to say about recording is probably garbage, since if you knew what you were doing you wouldn't release such terrible-sounding content. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems a little hard to accept-I can record better audio than that, and I'm an idiot who isn't very good at recording.

Superb Sir. Ive taken so much of what you have shown and added it to my songs. On my £500 PC and limited software, it great to see how its actually done. If i get over 1k streams, im happy! And i bought your Leppard Kit sound.... On the Lepp sound, Did MUTT use MIDI bass? Its sounds too perfect for a picked BASS....

I"m hoping you'll respond to this question. How do you have all the characters panned? I saw you do a video on this a while back but it wasn't as in depth. I've done it for part of an outro of a song and it works great. I realized just now that I should have done a lot more tracks to get my "crowd" sound.
