1:24 "That was a really solid low note" Me: Grabs popcorn and settles in for the REAL low note. I always love seeing other people discover the things I love, but seeing people find VoicePlay for the first time is something special. You get hooked by Geoff's insane low notes but stay for the amazing arrangements, beautiful harmonies, and VP's "unique brand of dumb." The members clearly enjoy doing this and it shows in their work. Addition: I have not seen anyone else mention it, so I will. Santa is being played by Geoff's brother-in-law, but the Santa voice is done by Eli. He's really good at character voices.

One of my favorite things is to see someone react to Voiceplay for the first time. They (you) always are astounded when you hear Geoff's first low note, and I just giggle knowing what's coming. The beatboxer Layne Stein, Geoff and Eli Jacobson (short for Eliezer, pronounced to rhyme with jelly) the bald tenor are still with Voiceplay. The bearded high tenor was a founding member with Geoff and Layne in 1997, they sang under the name 4:2:Five then, left for personal reasons in 2020. The other singer, left in 2021 to join the US Navy and will be singing with them. They have replaced one position with Cesar de la Rosa and feature other artists on a regular basis. To see something non-theatric, try Can't Help Falling in Love (same lineup as this song). Then to see how much fun they are, We Don't Talk About Bruno, new lineup . Geoff Castellucci started a solo channel during the pandemic and has 13 or 14 pieces. He also has dramatic readings on his channel. I would recommend that you start with his House of the Rising Sun. He also has a new one coming in a few days. Thanx for reacting to this and please come back and do more. They have a loyal following who will be here for you every time.

@@bobcieslinski the Dream On arrangement is 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
@Aurora-cv5to2 жыл бұрын
So glad to see you covering VoicePlay. This one was arranged by Layne, the beatbox. These wonderful, full-on theatrical pieces are recorded by each singer individually in their home studios, then rough edited by the arranger. The video is planned and edited by the arranger. Eli (L-EE), the bald tenor, did the lighting. It gets a final vocal edit by Ed Boyer. When the pandemic hit they doubled down on their youtube/patreon/ theatrical productions and they just keep getting better. Do check out their latest - a cover of Aerosmith's Dream On - it's stunning. You might want to watch Warriors first - when planning Dream On they saw Warriors as the prequel. (I've loved them from the first song I heard, but Warriors tipped me into obsessive fandom.) Hoist the Colors, Halo, Dragonborn - all stunners. The guy with the beard is Earl - he left for personal reasons in early/mid 2020. J. None (black leather jacket over skeleton shirt) left to join the Marines in early 2021. So you'll see a lot of faces as they bring in others.... don't worry, you'll sort it out in the end and we'll all jump in with a who's-who. Their ability to feature new voices and make it sound like they've been singing together for years is just mind-blowing.

The line-up here has changed over the last year as two members left. The black singer, J.None left to join the navy, and Earl, with the beard also left for reasons of his own. Bald Eli (said like ellie) is still with the group as of course are Geoff and Layne, the vocal percussion, as they are the bones of the group, percussion and bass. So more recent videos won't be quite the same, in terms of members but they are still growing and improving with every video. They are extremely versatile and Geoff has his own channel of low bass covers which are brilliant. He's been working on his bass range for years and uses subharmonics, not growl. The other thing about VoicePlay - you can always hear the lyrics, something you can't always say of singers today.

Welcome to 'the theater nerds' of a cappella. They definitely will record videos with costumes and sets, but not all of their videos are quite as elaborate as this. I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions, but I'll start off with "Little Mermaid Medley", "Moana Medley," "Wicked Medley", "Queen in Five Minutes", "Boy Bands in Five Minutes", and "Hoist the Colours". That last one takes the snippet of a song that was heard in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie and transforms it into an epic sea shanty sung by a group of scarily deranged pirates, LOL. Most of their arrangements are done by either Layne Stein, the beatboxer, or Geoff. For simpler, less theatrical videos there is "True Colors", "Man in the Mirror", "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Tennessee Whiskey". Geoff also started doing solo work during the pandemic. If you want to check out great bassiness, his "16 Tons" is awesome. His solo works aren't a cappella, as they have some instrumental accompaniment, but they usually figure 4 or 5 Geoffs singing together, helping to showcase his incredibly wide range. Plus he did some videos talking about how he has developed his lower notes and answering question on various techniques, etc. Yeah, it's all prerecorded, the lights are an LED inside a plastic mouth-guard type insert. With the elaborate things they are doing with the set and lights, with usually only one camera etc., you can understand why they just lip sync when they do these videos, it takes them hours to do this, with going back to get different shots and angles. But if you search, you will find that they have performed Oogie Boogie's Song live. The last note Geoff hits is a subharmonic E1, here's a small clip of him doing it: kzbin.infoUgkxkwWSmPep4QUJxoFdb0FVjBF2IGUrnceF

Geoff's one of the "holy trinity" of acapella basses: Geoff, Tim Foust of HomeFree, and Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix. I see you're familiar with all of them. Geoff does some amazing "solo" stuff, where he multi-tracks himself and does amazing harmony - with himself! His cover of 16 Tons is probably his most popular, and I think his cover of Blackbird is an increadible display of his range. Also, Voiceplay is well known for their showmanship in many regards, but their Wicked Medley is outstanding if you like musicals. The Dragonborn Comes if you're into Skyrim at all, and it's an amazing display of both arangement and vocal talent. They have a lot of great content. Voice Play was one of several really worthwhile groups that were eliminated from season four (or was it two?) of The Sing-Off, which was won by Pentatonix in season three and Home Free in season four. And there were others as well. The Sing-Off was the finishing school for the world of "popacapella," the modern acapella. Fans of these groups usually have their favorites, but admit, sometimes grudgingly, their debt to Pentatonix, for leading the way. I follow PTX myself, but also enjoy and acknowledge the work of Home Free and Voice Play. And just a bit ago, I caught up with another group from the Sing-Off, I think it was season two, called Face, and they were brilliant too. There's so much to admire and love!

Excellent reaction! I see that you react to Home Free and Pentatonix quite a bit. Well now that you found Voiceplay , buckle your seatbelt! You have a lot to catch up on and you will have so much fun doing it! They are by far the best of the top three a cappella groups, in my humble opinion. You have a new subscriber in me and I hope you continue down the VoicePlay rabbit hole. And do check out Geoff Castellucci‘s channel, you will be blown away!

OK, left to right, there’s J.None and Earl, both of whom have left Voiceplay in the last year or so. Then the guy in the red is Eli (ELee) Jacobson, Geoff, and Layne Stein, the beatboxer and arranger of this piece. Basically, from what I understand, the vocals are done in studio. The guys then sing along while playing their parts for the video, so it’s all kind of lip synced in the video. Geoff is known for his subharmonics-it’s a particular way to produce notes that your natural voice can’t get to. He’s actually gone quite a bit lower (Bb0) in Halo Theme. In chest voice he gets down to somewhere around G1, maybe down as far as F#. These guys just released a version of Aerosmith’s Dream On that is really excellent. As always, they take the original and do their own thing. Lots of music to enjoy with these guys! Welcome to the rabbit hole! Thanks for doing this! Looking forward to seeing more!

Geoff has a few videos on his own channel where he sings harmony with himself, you should check out Blackbird to see his range, currently an impressive 5 octaves. Voiceplay go the whole hog in most of their main productions with set, make-up, costume, lighting and all. They all have the ability to get into character for their videos, so the songs sound very genuine.

As to the LED in the mouth singing, it can be done, Til Lindermann of Rammstein did it for a while on live stage performances. Though he is insane, and has performed with flamethrowing wings strapped to his back.

I just love it when i see the look on faces of reactors when they hear and see VP.. They have a very solid bunch of people fans... They have soooo many excellent songs with old and new members... Geoff of course has his own channel too. This is one of my favourite videos.. But I think I say that about most of them... I am/was a lifetime metal fan and nothing changed my mind... My playlist consisted og 70' onwards heavy metal and rock ballsds... But since came across VP while searching for Disney music for my 6 grandkids..... My playlist has expanded to include VP... In fact I listen more to tgem now than the other. Loved your reaction.. Am subscribing so I can carry on going down this Rabbit hole. 😏

Thanks Allison for the kind words and for subbing! I like metal too. There are so many great songs and genres of music. Voice play is great and I am glad I’ve discovered them along with many other groups. This ride should be fun for us all.

For me, what sets them apart is their harmonies, their transitions between songs and keys, and just a sense of fun. They do have serious pieces, but a lot of times they just are goofballs while they’re performing. As a band teacher I’m going to assume that you’re around kids all the time, and you may be pleased to know that they are very very family friendly. I do not have any musical training, so I’m always pleased when someone with that training can give some additional information or reactions, because I enjoy some thing but I’m not sure why. I tend to think of their productions in a few different categories medleys, Disney covers, pop/rock, theatrical, and their minis are so often under watched and they are usually really good as well.

A bit late to the party, but since I can't see it mentioned, The Charismatic Voice did an interview with Layne about how they arrange, record, layer, and mix their songs. It's pretty interesting.

I think it helps too for theatrics that Geoff used to work for theme parks. Including Beetlejuice Review where he met his wife Kathy. Geoff is definitely a great actor and singer. Very amazing and talented.

They all did, for Disney and others, I believe. That's also where they met most of the people they feature, such as Rachel Potter. The girl that was featured in a couple newer ones, Ashley (can't remember her last name), worked with Cesar at the parks.

Geoff Castellucci's range is unbelievable. I love groups like Voice Play and Home Free because their voices are right out there, front and center. There's no instrumentals to carry them . . .it's just their pure vocal talent.

Dunno if you caught it (a lot of reactors miss it), but at 2:39 when the beatboxer (Layne) had his only line, Geoff did a low rolling series of notes in the background to bridge the gap before the beatboxer picked back up.
