Tim Henson, the guitarist that wrote the majority of this song and did the intro guitar riff talks about this a lot in his videos. It started with him learning music by copying a Jayden Smith song and then taking the piano parts and adding his own melody over it then just "flexing" his chops to that riff with a trap beat which was adopted to live music

I love the disconnect between regular people and people who are involved with making music when they react to polyphia. Regular people are like "umm that was cool?" and music people are drooling. Another band that gets the musicians to react a lil spicy is doll$boxx. Very different, but extremely talented none the less

We just know how hard it is to play something like this. Or at least we have an idea. People like Tim and Yvette that can play a guitar like a piano are the nth degree of the nth degree, but to people that haven't at least tried to play... It just sounds like weird keyboards to them. As Bob points out, their rhythm section is just world class, too. Thank god for people like them that make music for us to geek on. PS... Does anyone else want to give their drummer $500 to go buck wild on Buddy Rich for 15 minutes? I want to hear him swing. I bet it would be worth 2x the money.

Thanks for your reaction to this. I am 38 and haven't played in a traditional band since grade school. But when I heard this song, my music ear tuned in and I had to listen to this song on repeat for about 20 minutes because of all the complexity. I shared this song with friends and no one could appreciate the complexity in the song and how much skill is needed to have this kind of timing. I have seen some videos of them playing live and they hold this mastery even on the stage.

@@bobcieslinski I'm curious if you've seen sour looks from, for lack of a better term, the old guard of band directors when they see music like this. I've come across more than I'd like who immediately say they don't like it for a myriad of reasons like "it's too complicated", "It's too fast", "I just don't like rock", and even the eye-rolling excuse of "this sounds satanic" 😂 You should react to the guitarist Plini! He's an Australian guitarist who is an absolute virtuoso. I recommend starting with his song Pan from the album Impulse Voices. And make sure you check out the album version. It features an instrument solo that a person wouldn't immediately expect in a progressive rock song. When I first listened to the song it actually made my eyes sweat a little.

And no one steps on anyone else's sound. With everything that is going on, all the complex and insane playing and they are so in time with each other that no one steps on or plays over anyone else, they play along instead. That takes some serious talent. You should watch Rick Beato's interview with Tim Henson. I was about ready to just toss my guitars in the fire pit out back after he told Rick that it took him quite a while to get his solo's for GOAT down, maybe an hour or two! Seriously? It took me an hour or two to be able to listen to the entire guitar part. But then Tim never stops playing his guitar in every interview I have seen him on.

This recommendation is for something much heavier than this but still wonderfully complex. There's a live version of the band Ne Obliviscaris performing their song And Plague Flowers the Kaleidescope. It was the last song of an hour long set, and they perform it flawlessly. You might call the genre symphonic metalcore, and this band is studied for their compositional abilities in the Sydney Conservatorium.

Good question but if you watched the video right before that comment I mentioned how I thought the effect was cool that they had the soloist moving to the new soloist and of course they showed thr bass player after Henson walked by him.
