Thanx for your great work Bo!👍 As an old time 101-user (had 2 of them yeeeaars ago) I think there's one point that should be pushed a bit, the basic 101-sound wich it does without flaws. Same as the SH-1a but with a very low pricetag. As I'm missing that sound but never thought it was really worth it with the 1a, this is a nobrainer..... They're practically giving that sound away and you're just paying for som nice extras🙂 Roland is really coming back with their new stuff and people (like me😬) who's been complaining about "It's not real analog" can eat their hats because sound and play-/tweak-ability is what counts. And Roland is delivering!👊

An important finding, if you’re a Logic Pro user. Since Roland doesn’t seem to know this (May 2024), I will post this through my favourite electronica KZbinrs. Having owned the S-1 for about 5 minutes I began thinking about how I could integrate it into my UA/Logic Pro set up. USB-C connection to the Mac. First try resulted in the S-1 taking over completely, no access to UA. The Roland “support” site said that it wasn’t possible to use it with multiple audio interfaces! Accepting the challenge I created an Aggregate Device in the the Mac’s Audio MIDI set up, with the UA as master device. Let there be audio! The MIDI part was a brain twister though. Audio still working fine when I started the S-1’s internal sequencer. But no MIDI triggering the S-1. Double checking the MIDI setting on the S-1 revealed that I had adjusted the chorus, Cho, mistaking the o for a zero. The correct parameter is called CH. Why it wasn’t already set to channel 1 is anybody’s guess. Cool box, lousy support site, as usual. Roland, please fix your extremely slow and unhelpful site Thank you for sharing a helpful video.

@@UrbanGarden-rf5op for one because you eliminate USB noise, but most importantly, that was the only way I could get the notes played by the sequencer to be recognizable and recorded onto Logic.
@UrbanGarden-rf5op5 ай бұрын
@@hataproofrecords i would suggest investing in a high quality USB cable. There is a reason why Apple's and certain other dealers cables are so expensive. And it's not (just) about the quality of the wires, there are electronics involved in the connectors. I run the unit through a powered USB hub and have no noise problems. As for recording MIDI, in the setup I described there was no problem with the MIDI from the S-1 through USB. Logic just informed me it had added a MIDI input and output when I connected the S-1. Plug in and play, literally. Take note that the audio output of the S-1 is a headphones output , not a proper line output. I would use it for transfers only if there was no other solution. Sure, you'll get audio, but it's not the right impedance feeding the line input of your interface. And you have to be careful with the level since there is a power amp on the output of the S-1. Furthermore you'll introduce an unnecessary D/A - A/D conversion, which is not optimal. The USB connection is a (lossless) digital transfer. But it's horses for courses. Do it any way you prefer. I still stand by my original posting and method. ✌✌

This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I have a Roland T-8 & J-6 and been meaning to get a sequencer, a mixer and a Midi thru box. You answered all in one video. Please do more videos where you set up, connect all the various Roland Aira Compacts. What setup makes sense? Does a Zoom L6 make more sense than a BlueBox for a mixer? For this setup, would a Torso T1, Korg SQ-64 be good alternatives to the Novation Circuit? I also want to see a set up where it covers the connections for a CircuitTrack, Circuit Rhythm and Launchpad (in addition to the Roland Aira compact devices). Many thanks! I had opted between buying the groove box MC-101, but when I already have the Circuit Tracks, I just felt that the S-1 was a better deal. I'm a guy that doesn't connect anything to my synths and I think this will help me learn to do such a thing, fooling around with it. I like that the save feature is much better than the SH-4D is. My only gripe about Roland as they tend to push out product then not really support it with updates as much as Yamaha or Korg does.

Would you recommend this to a beginner? Guitar player for 24 years - good understanding of music, haven't played keys in a long time.
@thedeepblueskys4 ай бұрын
Honestly for a beginner I’d recommend something with more hands on controls and full sized knobs. Behringer has some really good options that won’t break the bank and offer the full experience. Just think you would learn synthesis better and it would be more fun to not have to use shift functions and menu dive as much. A used Korg Minilouge might be a good start as well because of the synth layout and built in oscilloscope. If you go that route you definitely wanna use your cool guitar pedals with it too. Reverb is definitely a must. Other than that this little synth would still be fun. I have a ton of synths and I’m thinking of getting one because of the portability. Plus it does sound great too. So if you end up getting one, I think you would enjoy it. I would definitely use a midi keyboard with it so I can properly play the thing.

Hello, great demo, my feeling from the very few material that is now available on line is that S-1 sounds a little bit crunchy, kinda dirty sounds, noisy and metallic. SH-101 on which it is based on, was a rough synthesizers, not exactly the type of sound i like more. I'd like to get on of these gears to play and sketch musical ideas, tho with no wasting time in programming the sounds. That's why J-6 is more attractive to me at the moment.

@@BoBeats Yeah, but I am not sure I'd like the 'type' of sound this equipment can make.
