Catching up several years after you made this video. Great stuff, and very interesting. I don't know if that method of dealing with the floor timbers is standard, but it's a very clever trick, effectively suspending them in mid-air at just the point they will need to be when all the scaffolding disappears. Bingeing my way through, having seen you make your first video on the Victoria/Arabella tender, should join up with you in a few weeks time. Many thanks.

Just found your youtubes. I love your choice of boat. You cannot go past Herreshoff for beautiful lines, in my opinion. Here in Australia, we have a lot of Herreshoff 28s and a few H36s, but we do not seem to have any of the smaller ones, although my late father had a 25 ft yacht which he believed to be Herreshoff design but had no proof. Keep up the good work! Colin

Lovely work Bob. Meticulous and methodical - how to build a wooden boat. And your video production matches, but no surprises there. It’s always a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work. Oh and I’m very envious of your workshop, complete with gantry crane no less, and lots of room to move! No doubt to fit your sculptures and the larger boat you’re yet to build ; ) Cheers from New Zealand.

I wonder if it would be a better idea to support floor timbers on stations and cut them and install them at the same time as stations. Thank you for making these videos, they are truly inspiring to set on to build Heaven or Herreshoff.

Wonderful channel. My wife is both incredulous and envious of the cleanliness and organization of your shop. Sadly, she has never seen such a setup around my workspace! I understand the ribands are being used to set the pattern for your soon to be steamed ribs. However, I am not exactly clear why you used them to set your plank spacing on the previous video since the planks will not lay directly on them. Could you not line off the planks directly on the ribs, once installed, using a batten? Perhaps I am missing something. If this requires too lengthy of a response, particularly with your pending boat show appearance, I certainly understand and will await the answer in a future video. Your progress is amazing - great work!
@TheArtofBoatBuilding5 жыл бұрын
I lined off the ribbands to match the planking so that it will be easier to line up the planks and be able to use the ribbands to assist in clamping. And it looks good!

I don't understand the floor timbers seem to protruding way out beyond the hull. What am I missing?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding5 жыл бұрын
Majoofi what I’ve built so far is the mold for the hull. This mold will shape the frames and the planking of the hull goes on top of them. The mold is not a part of the finished boat. The frame will be attached to the floor timber. So the frames ( 13/16”) plus the planking (1/2”) will be over 1 1/2” wide. Thanks

Dear sir, I thoroughly enjoy your channel, very well done and professional. Thank you. As a professional wood worker I just cringe every time I see you use your table saw without the use of a push stick. Hopefully a kickback never happens to you but if it does the injury to your thumb can be quite horrific.

Some of those center floors seem like they stick out a bit far to have a fair bottom. I guess we'll see when you start bending the frames. Can't wait. Hope you have a grand time at the boat show this weekend. I so wish I could be there too, but up from Kentucky is a longer drive than fits my budget at this time. Maybe some day I'll be able to build a small-ish cruiser and go down the Ohio river to the Mississippi river, through the gulf, around Florida, and up the coastline to the shows up there. Way to far to row, and the fuel would likely be about the same under motor power as driving my big old van over land, but I guess we'll just have to see. Have fun for those of us that can't make it this year.
@MemphisApplegate5 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that you tilt your blade on the table saw away from the fence, which means of course moving the fence to the other side. The way you are doing it now pinches the wood between the fence and the blade, and on those small pieces can mean trouble. Woodworker and boat builder here, but not nearly the quality boat builder you are. Fine work.

Why do you allow such high volume ads on your channel. That's so disturbing to other persons in the household, and as well to neighbors, for viewers that live in condos or apartments. Other than that, I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos.
@ThePbird15 жыл бұрын
Joel White calls for the frames to be bent directly onto the moulds. Mdf is not the right material for the moulds so the time consuming process of using ribbands was needed. Cannot see the advantage to this method.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding5 жыл бұрын
Paul I guess we will have to agree to disagree. MDF is a great material for mold frames. Maynard Bray stopped by and saw my boat mold this past weekend at the Wooden Boat Show. I ask him his thoughts on MDF. He said if it was available in the 1980's they would have used it. If fact The Brooklin Boat Yard, Joel Whites Boat Yard, build all their boats using MFD molds. Comes in straight consistent sheets that is easily CNC cutout. Maynard mentioned that he believes the North West School of Boat Building used ribband on several Havens they have build over the years.There are advantages stay tuned as they will be revealed in future videos.
