The Art of Boat Building

Күн бұрын

In this episode (S2-E44) of The Art of Boat Building boat builder Bob Emser show how the margin boards fit next to the floorboard in the Haven 12 1/2. Installing the margin boards requires several cardboard templates to be made. In wooden boat building the margin board and floorboards make up the sole of the small yacht. The sole is constructed out black walnut board that require re-sawing and surface planing. Once the boards are fitted a mixture of danish oil is discussed and applied revealing the beauty of the black walnut wood.
NOTE:
I miss spoke in the video referring to boiled linseed oil as being heated. Boiled linseed oil gets it's name from the Medieval era, where linseed oil was boiled with lead oxide to promotes the hardening of the linseed oil by reacting with atmospheric oxygen. Heating shorten its drying time. Today boiled linseed oil isn't actually a heating process, but rather the practice of mixing metallic dryers with the oil to make it dry faster. Raw linseed oil can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months to fully dry where as Boiled linseed oil take about 1 day.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”
Bob Emser

When I was sloshing masts on "Drudge Boats " Skipjacks in the Chesapeake we used Boiled Linseed and turps to finish a freshly scraped mast then as we did coats added a bit of varnish to it to harden the surface. This worked well as the mast hoops would scrape the top off but leaving the oil /turps o to penetrate the southern pine/Loblloy masts. We scraped and finish every year so build-up and darkening of the oil was not a problem, and it will darken. Much luck and fair sailing.

In addition to that idea. It is a good idea to use the wax paper and not just a new lid and seal. The lids get glued to the jar if a little of the contains are on the jar. Some times I need to put a glass jar in a vise to get the lid off. The wax paper would prevent that from happening. Maybe your Mom was even smarter than you figured.

That gorgeous floor reminded me of a teak coffee table (very similar color and oiled finish) my parents bought when I was a kid. My grandfather was a joiner and when he saw it he really admired it. Next time he came over he brought a sheet of plywood to take a trace of the (non rectangular, slightly concave) top and made other notes and measurements. The next time we went to his house there was an exact replica of my parents' coffee table in his living room.

I love the attention to detail and the good explanations for us who don't have as much boat knowledge. Also, skipping ahead when needed is nice. Once you see one board being cut out, I don't want to watch another 20 of the same thing. These are great, relaxing videos for when I want to tune out the world and just watch some quality boatbuilding. Thank you for the content.

Nice work, lovely boat . In the 70ts I worked on the original Sadie (N.G.Herreschoff's rethinking of Alerion) at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Just as an interesting note in the Chesapeake builders rarely used Black Walnut in boats as it was used to make coffins in those days, a superstitious lot...lol

Looks awesome. For the technically curious: 'Boiled' linseed oil is no longer boiled, it has heavy metal driers added instead. If you want really boiled linseed oil look for 'polymerized' linseed oil. Perpetual warning: Oily rags can spontaneously compost, dispose of rags properly (in water, in fire).

I made Boat Soup by mixing equal parts Tung Oil, Pine Tar, Turpentine and a couple caps full of Japan Dryer. Smells wonderful. It’s very important to put rags in a bucket or bag of water. Spontaneous combustion does happen when you have oils and solvents mixed and on rags or sponges.

This series is amazing, and I am pretty envious of both your skills and more importantly your patience. Truly gifts. One quick question, when you put wood. Together, for instance the scarth joints, you use epoxy. Why not waterproof wood glue like tightbond iii? Thank you again, it's amazing
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, Thanks for your question. I have used Titebond III in several application. Basically if the joint is going to be in a more constant wet environment, like the hull I use epoxy. If not, like interior trim, topside trim, I've used Titebond III. Sometime if I was concerned with the color of the glue joint I might use epoxy with wood flour from the material to thicken and color the glue, also what I'd use to fill imperfection like small knots. Both great glues! Thanks for watching. Cheers, Bob

Beautiful work as always, and great video and editing work, must take ages to do! I was wondering if there was a means of creating a non slip finish. On regular floorboards have seen people use sand or sugar in the paint, but that would spoil the fine look and not sure how that would work with the Danish oil finish. Perhaps a non slip floor is not needed? All the best Boris

Bob, a few questions about lining-off, although I realize this is not what you are working on at the moment. As I look at the lining-off video, it appears that, except for the wider garboard and broad strake, you divided the planks by equal width starting at the widest mold, and then again on the aft end at mold 22 and then at stern end at mold 4. My question is about mold 4. Why this mold, and not, say, mold 2? And why not at the actually stem? Would this look bad or something. Finally, how did you decide on the width of the garboard and broad strake? Thanks
