How to Turn Over/Flip a Boat Hull by Yourself and Building a Boat Cradle S2-E34

The Art of Boat Building

The Art of Boat Building

Күн бұрын

In the episode (S2-E34 )of The Art of Boat Building we see how to turn over a boat hull by yourself. Small boats are built on a mold upside down. Once the hull is finished the boat is flipped so that the topside can be completed. Once flipped over the boat must have a place to firmly rest. The best solution is a boat cradle. Building a boat cradle is covered in this episode. To Flip a Boat Hull by yourself will require lifting equipment.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”

Beautiful! I like the two-hoist system, rather than rolling it in a sling. It seems straightforward. When you were lowering, I noticed a peg in the ballast keel to align it with the hull. Maybe there's not too much to say, but can you comment on the alignment? Seems like it could be tricky, and once it's sitting on the keel, there's not much you can adjust.
@4englishlies875

Great to see the boat this way. Just out of curiosity how much do think she weighs without the keel ballast? And what do you think the final weight will be when all said and done?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 3 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing that she weighs about 300-400 lbs as of now. As I mentioned in the video the designed displacement weight is 1400 lbs. So as Archimedes taught us her weight is equal to the displacement. It is great to see her upright thanks! Thanks for watching and you continued support. Cheers, Bob

I have to flip a fiberglass car body. This came with the kit I bought and the seams are so thin I went through the body itself sanding down The parting lines. I'm pretty sure I have to reinforce all the seams from underneath and you can't lay fiberglass upside down plus it needs to be sanded to get a good bite or connection. I don't have an overhead hoist and I envy the fact that you do! I'm thinking about putting plywood or attaching plywood to each end cut into a semicircle and just rolling it. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them you're obviously a master Carpenter and have a good ideas.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, I think, as you suggested, that the best approach is the plywood circle. A few days ago my friend Lou from Tip From a Shipwright posted a video of him flipping a 23' skiff with that method. Here is a link if you haven't seen it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaLWZ5dtfd2rhpo He shows and interesting roller system as he had limited space. Take a look and let me know how it goes. Cheers, Bob

Very interesting and useful as I'm about to do my first flip! Could I ask how the temporary transverse boards were attached to the boat? They obviously take a lot of strain and weight during the flip but looked as though they were just attached to a frame - is that correct? Thanks for your help.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 5 ай бұрын
Yes, they are attached to frames. The hull without decks, interior fitting and a ballast keel is not that heavy. They are quite important to keep the shape of the boat at the widest part of the beam. Best wishes on your flip. Exciting milestone!
