Although not the same species of cactus, here in Mexico is really common to see Opuntia cacti or Prickly Pear Cactus, colloquially named "Nopal". A lot of the times its grilled to give it a better flavor but it can also be eaten raw (without the spines of course). Good source of manganese, vitamin C, antioxidants and calcium.

In the mexican desert, we have a ton of variants, most of them, highly toxic, at very least, you'll get really high if you happen to gulp in a cactus if you dont know which ones to pick, a mexican cactacea know as "nopal" is non toxic and very rich in water, but you're soon to need a very intense dose of sugar, since the cactacea species tends to capture both lipids and sugars, so, its basically... youre gonna be fine waterwise, but yourre going to start going nuts or die of low blood preassure if your body isnt used to having low levels of sugar in your blood stream. I once ate an entire kilo of nopal, ended up having the shakes for sugar about an hour later. think twice before feasting in any cactus.

I don't think it's about defending life or even seeing it as important. It's about recognizing the structures life takes and how those structures are built up from non-living substance. We all are all built of similar substances and all came from either a singular cell or a multitude of singular cells of which only a few prospered. It's not about whether or not something that is alive knowing what it is or if it can name it's origin. It's about the time it took for that living thing to be brought into existence. That cactus linage is so much like your own. Time let it become a cactus. And time led it to it's demise. Just because it isn't born with sapience doesn't mean it isn't real. That it doesn't know it exists. Plants may not be human, or even animal. But they live. Death comes in many forms all of which are beautiful. It's not about respecting or loving plants or nature. It's about acknowledging the forms in which it will exist for a brief time, and afterwards we all go back to being the same non-living material upon death. Just like how before you were born your matter existed unknowing of itself. We all go back to that when we die. You, me, and yes even that cactus. We get to live our lives and go back to that solemn yet sweet darkness. But the question you asked I can answer. Can that cactus tell if it's alive or dead? If it couldn't before it can now. It's been eaten and turned partly human. So yes, the cactus became a small part of Bob and some of those calories he got from it acknowledged it's old form as in patterns of thought inside his brain. Is it the same as the cactus knowing itself? No. But its more than most give it thought.

It's easy to remember the bad things. I'm sure you've seen a few non toxic disagreements but just didn't notice them because they were rather dull. But thank you. And if it's true that you haven't seen any non toxic disagreements in years then might I suggest visiting other forums with slightly more mature individuals like yourself. Maybe you speak with many people or you notice many conversations where they either value their opinion to much or even just don't feel like backing down because it's only some random person they are talking to that doesn't matter or w/e. I'm a genuine kinda guy. If someone makes a good point, and I value it then I win by agreeing with them. If I argue a point just because they are generally disagreeing with me then I gain nothing from that. Just more of a yelling match. I value conversation and exchange of information.
