I was lucky enough to see these A4s at the NRM, but was not aware of all the effort that went into bringing this one up to this condition. Well done all involved in its restoration.

Great to see how they took a battered and poorly looked after A4 and put some love and attention into restoring her appearance. Great video! What a rewarding experience for all the people who did this. Dave

Agreed, they have the experise in that town to do the job right. I was told however, by one of the NRM staff that there is so much filler in her she can never be steamed again.

+xX_Serious_Gamer_Xx xX_Serious_Gamer_Xx I imagine if they really wanted to steam 4489 again they could just either find a spare A4 boiler (there is an A4 boiler that was used by 4472 from 1977 until 2005), or they could just raise the funds and have a new boiler constructed. However, I doubt that'll happen seeing as the engine is in Canada. The only way I can ever see 4489 and 60008 steaming again is if someone managed to convince the museums who own them to sell them back (which is highly unlikely that the museums would ever give them up). I think someone did try to throw their money around to try to prevent the engines from returning to North America after the Great Gathering but the York NRM refused the money.

Great video. I met the man responsible for the dent in the front. He was moving DOC with an Alco switcher and all he did was wrap a chain around the knuckle coupler and hook it onto the A4's coupling hook. He said it rolled much easier than expected so hence the knuckle being buried into the front valance. I hope they're looking after it better now. David.

Many thanks for commenting and subscribing to my channel, much appreciated. It has been great being able to observe the restoration at close quarters and for that I am grateful to the museum staff. It is only a few weeks now until all six preserved Class A4s go on show at York National Railway Museum to celebrate the 126 MPH steam speed record set by Mallard 75 years ago. Dominion of Canada will be returning to Canada next year. Regards, Jeff.

bobnweaver Don`t now if you`re interested, i worked with a guy yrs ago who was a fireman, and he told me how some drivers used massive amounts of coal, and how he hated working with them, he run out Paddington. ps the A4s used to do a fair old speed (est 70mph) going North through Hornsey.

I have loved trains since growing up in Minnesota in 60s. Most those lines are gone and rails torn up. Various organizations have preserved bits and pieces. I just wish we had trains in the US like in Great Britain and Europe.

+Toolrific Many thanks for your comments. We are very lucky here in Great Britain having so many preserved locos running on charter trains on the main line. Also our heritage railways have grown from hopeful projects started by small bands of volunteers in the 1960s and 1970s into huge tourist attractions. Best wishes from North East England.

At 3:59 , I noticed a black fox. Where did that come from?
@bobnweaver
@bobnweaver 10 жыл бұрын
One of the other in the class had a silver fox on the side. I think the restorers just left a bit of paint on in the shape of a fox as a bit of a joke, when they were stripping the paint off.

60010/4489 was in that unloved state because it was left outside to rot at Darlington loco works for just over 10 to 15 years. It's chimney and whistle were used on other a4s. It was eventually moved after being overgrown with undergrowth.
@bobnweaver
@bobnweaver 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. 60010 was not "left outside to rot at Darlington loco works for just over 10 to 15 years". It was a working loco until about 1963. I seen it outside Darlington shed in an unloved state in 1965 but it received a cosmetic restoration at Crewe before it was shipped abroad soon after. Regards, Jeff.

I was most likely due to them being so used to North American designs that the A4 was almost Alien to them. Also the Museum in Quebec is fairly small with only the barest facilities. British locomotives need a lot of care and detail work like a fine automobile, while North American locomotives are built to be sturdy and functional like a HGV and only need a fresh coat of black paint every now and then. Also considering the weather Quebec has, the A4 was in pretty good shape. It could have been a lot worse.

Hi, Wanting to show this video please, and maybe a couple of your others) in the Archives at Barrow Hill Roundhouse next weekend 8/9 Feb for the East Coast Giants Gala. It will be on a big screen as part of a montage. Your name will obviously be displayed. I will have to edit it slightly and take the sound off as several films will be running together. Is that OK ? bobnweaver That's brilliant, thankyou. I will make sure your name is displayed. The two A4 engines have already arrived from the NRM and will look great alongside Blue Peter. the Atlantic, Butler Henderson and so on. Shame the Tornado is in so many bits! The archive rooms are going interactive with films, searchable photo and film databases as well as the video display and some of our many artifacts. It's going to be good! Regards, Mike
