Wow! This video is amazing. I was born the year this was invented and have been playing guitar for over 50 years now. And I haven't known about the Binsen Echorec until I saw the T-Rex version or this famous design. I have many solid state delays, but none of them have the warmth and character this device has. I am an engineer and love analog circuitry. Thank you for this video. I love the pictures of the insides of the original designs. I hope I can own a T-Rex Echorec one of these days. I am now subscribed :)

🤔 *I could see a modern version of the **_P.E. 603-Stereo_** unit pictured at the **23:15** mark, with perhaps with two options..., either mounting it in a sliding drawer mechanism for use in industry standard 19" equipment racks, or in a purpose built case with a removable top panel, (to permit access for head and drum maintenance).*

Hello John, to get an idea of what it is, google search pictures for "semprini impianto audio". They were rack mounts for P.A. systems, before 19" industry standard was a thing... at least in Italy 🙂

@BobsToneReview
@BobsToneReview Ай бұрын

Hello Bob, you are criminally under-subscribed imho!. It would be great to see you show off some of the other great Italian gear from the 50's and 60's. Especially the guitars and amps from Meazzi and Galanti. Peace from Scotland!.

Thank you for chiming in with such kind words Keiran! I'm happy that you also liked this new episode, great to have you on board! Your suggestions are extremely interesting. Staying on the Echorec Topic, there are also great Echo units made in Italy by Meazzi and Montarbo. As for guitars, this year I bought a Kroma Galanti, which sounds amazing, despite being absolutely inexpensive. I hope to dedicate an episode to it. I also have something else in the pipeline so stay tuned. 🙂Seasonal greetings to you!

@BobsToneReview Hey Bob, no problem at all, I've been a with you from a few years back, I've always appreciated your content. I had a 1971 Montarbo mod. 112 echo unit that had a magnetic drum like a Binson. That was a great unit, I have a few Italian guitars, a 1967 Galanti Grand Prix, a 1963 Eko 500v4, a 1965 Meazzi Atlas as well as some vintage Davoli/Wandre amps. I love old Italian gear!. Meazzi made some beautiful solid bodies, the baby Jupiter and the Corsair are so cool and the pick ups are fantastic!. Thanks again my friend, Peace.

Not to compare too much, as it is two different approaches, but I got the first version of the T-Rex Replicator tape echo. I am very happy with it. This certain analog echo effect inspires me a lot. And as you say, those machines has "somthing". It is almost an intrument of its own rights. By the way, I am from Denmark and lives very close to T-Rex in Vejle town. I have been visiting them but that was many years ago. They really seem as very competent engineers. Best regards from Denmark

Hello Carsten! Thank you for chiming in with your interesting comment and kind words. I totally agree, the Replicator is an excellent device and, in a certain perspective, has many affinities with the Echorec, even though, as you say, "it is not to compare too much" 🙂 I had only a few email exchanges with Lars at T.Rex, unfortunately I didn't get to meet them personally; please say hello from me if you ever have the chance to visiting them again. 🙂 Have a great Christmas holyday!

Love my T-Rex Echorec and the Replicator. T-Rex got a bad rap on some blogs when a complaint was made about the units noise. There are five internal trim pots. Don't touch the bias one. Don't bother with the two for the Magic Eye. There are two for Output Gain and something (maybe effect level). Those two pots have a lot of interplay, but if you experiment with those settings, the "noise" can be reduced to almost nothing. Also, go ahead and adjust the volume pots at the back of the Echorec.
@BobsToneReview
@BobsToneReview Ай бұрын
Good point Rik, I agree that the Replicator is an excellent device as well. I'm using it, especially in studio, for quite a few years now. As for the Echorec, I would recommend to use the 4 trim pots on the back of the unit for the volume of the single heads, without messing with the internal trim-pots. Also, to reduce background noise, it's important that the Tone knob is not cranked up in "Swell" mode and of course that heads and memory disc are always kept clean and well lubricated.

I was so excited to hear that T. Rex was reissuing this - and I knew you were going to make a video on it! ~$2K for this seems reasonable when you look at what the jacked up price is on a new Fulltone Tape Echo (or the SS one, as the video shows)

I have a WEM Copicat, the tape delay and valve sound is awesome, I stopped using it about 20 years ago preferring my digital delay pedals, but after about 3 or 4 years I went back to the WEM, I guess I must be a bit of a WEM fanboy as I have the WEM Dominator MKII 100W amp. I wish someone would make a 21st century version of the Copicat, just because I love the brand. I might buy the Binson Echorec though, its cool!

Exhaustive.... And exhausting. The good thing is.. There is a lot of information. The bad thing is... There is too much information relative to sound clips. For the first 25+ minutes there are a few clips of 10-15 seconds each. Also, in the clips he has a metronome or click track that is incredibly loud and annoying, therefore destroying the whole purpose of appreciating the sound of the delay. So this was not the best use of 45 minutes. Could have been 10 minutes of pure playing. The guy's playing is great and the units sound amazing. Leave the captions on to help with his accent but his writing & description is really strong. So if you want to spend 40 of 45 minutes reading about tape delays this is for you!! Maybe just FFwd to 25 minutes to hear more playing.

Harvey thank you so much for such accurate review of my review! 😃😄 I wish I could have made a shorter video, you are right; I just strived to cover every aspect for a comprehensive review. As for the rhythmic base (not really a metronome or click track) try to exclude the right stereo channel, you should hear the guitars and effects more prominent in the mix. As for the spiel vs. sound samples ratio, it's a matter of personal preference, I generally tend to favour accurate technical and historical information. Keeping the subtitles on as I recommend at the start of the video is a great tip. Also, the chapter list skips in the description might help to jump to sound samples directly, if that is what you are after. Please feel free to browse through the other content of the channel! 🙂
