Hey Dave, great instruction. Spot on! Not many people get those chords right. That was totally improvised when we recorded the track. We did about 52 takes of the song. The last take we did had that solo and it was the one we kept. Thanks for your attention to detail. ;-)!

Well hey there, Joe! Thanks for chiming in and the insight. Wow, 52 takes. It was worth it though to get that iconic bass solo! I never would have guessed they flew in the chord slide when it reappeared later. The wizardry of Shelly Yakus. Thanks for confirming the chord type. Going forward I will teach this with authority knowing it has the Joe Bouchard Stamp of Approval!

How cool is it that Joe responded to this?? You're an awesome bass player, Dave! Looking forward to seeing you at future gigs (maybe tonight).

One more thing. The second time you hear that sliding seventh chord in the vamp, it is just a re-record of the first lick. No samplers in our studio in 1977! It was done with a second tape machine that recorded just that sliding bass chord, and then the engineer had to "wild sync" the part back into the track. Pretty tricky. When we heard it our we were amazed that they got it to fit so well.

Joe, you and BOC have been favorites of mine starting way back in high school. I used to draw the BOC logo all over the place. One of the best concerts I ever saw was when you headlined the Capital Centre in Landover MD back in the 70s (don't remember what year, I lost my concert ticket stubs). It was called the Holiday Spectacular. Opening for BOC: Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, and Rush!

I've only recently started playing by ear and that last bit had me scratching my head. Just a power chord felt too neat, but an open string felt way too dissonant. Glad I found this little clip

EXACTLY --when Joe went to Alembics like many discovered chords were articulate, clear and in tune. And he POPPed the hell outta those strings.on the first lick

Dave Demarco, I came across this video by chance and I'm glad I did, thanks so much for opening my eyes to the correct way of playing the chords in this bass solo. I've been playing it wrong since the late 1970's! That was an excellent lesson.

You're welcome Dave. I'm looking forward to some more of your lessons. I also forgot to mention, very cool that Joe Bouchard commented on this video! I'm from Long Island, New York so BOC were our hometown heroes back in the day, still are!

How about that, eh? I was stoked to hear from him as well. I will have some more lesson-related videos at some point. In the interim (and forgive the shameless plug) but if there's anything you'd like help with, I do offer lessons via Skype/FaceTime. 1st lesson is FREE. More info at www.MarylandBassLessons.com
