And he went on to do a second list, all of them great songs, and none of them (except for a couple of the Soundgarden songs) stands up and screams "Hey, I'm in 7/8! Get it?" These are all songs in which the signature antics serve the song value, not make you sound like Genesis. And in all this, he forgot Get Closer, by the flower child Linda Ronstadt, which is in a solid, unmistakable 7/4. It is by far the most pop-oriented song in this category. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKOUpKBvpamXbdE&ab_channel=LindaRonstadt-Topic

Was surprised not to hear "Living in the Past" on this list until I checked to see that it only reached #11. Not bad for a song that was intentionally written in 5/4 time as a reaction to being requested to write a hit single.

In 1968, when White Room was written, Holst's composition was 49 years old. Today, White Room is 56 years old. So The Planets was closer in time to White Room than we are today.

i didn't hear a mention about "changes" inspiration to compose it. you may be just young enough to not be exposed as I think the toy was not as popular and less ubiquitous in your age of awareness. that intro musical as well as the odd time signature is originally a musical box feature that was built into the toy jack-in-box that boomers and genX are very familiar with. this is actually the main reason that the songwriter felt it would work as an amusing riff many of us recognize immediately . well, iam assuming as such . btw, heart's barracuda would be a great measure exercise. And tool's 46 and 2 return break when drums solo locks in with main lowend full melody . by band always had difficulty knowing when to land together . i didn't . but i know by feel . i don't count...ever. i have an inner metronome and counting makes things too mechanical for me. but i can play their instruments too. this is me on bass.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/enXIfmesrbx-pNksi=qCdtAk6tl0Ba58l6

I'm a classical singer, the wackiest thing I've ever performed is by Britten, rejoice in the lamb. There's a movement that alternates every other bar, 5/8, 7/8 a couple of 3/8 ad nauseum... Also Alan Parsons had some funky passages in his orchestral stuff!

You really need to visit Burt Bacharach's back catalogue for dozens of other examples of major hits with odd time sigs. A surprising number of Burt's most famous songs feature individual measures with a different time sig to the rest of the song, including "I Say a Little Prayer" ("before I put on my makeup"), "The Look of Love" ("so much more than just words could ever say") and you can take a deep bath in the complexity of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" which has uneven measures in the verse, and (as Dionne Warwick pointed out to him during its recording) has a coda section in 13/8.

Unusual time signatures always tickle my ears, which is one of the reasons I love prog-rock so much. I get a nerdy pleasure out of working out the phrases for myself. I remember figuring out that riff from "Rusty Cage" and getting all excited about it. No one in my house shared my enthusiasm, sadly. Also, I miss the days of DJs. The need for corporate micro-control over everything has taken so much creativity out of the musical creative process. I'm probably about your age -- I know they say that people fixate on music from their youth, but honestly I just find very little out there today that grabs my interest. So much of the good stuff happened in the '60s and '70s (and some into the '80s). Nice video. New subscriber.

It's definitely a good feeling to crack the code on one of those riffs, even if your housemates don't share your excitement.

There's a small section of Live Dazed and Confused on Song Remains the Same where Zeppelin definitely uses that riff and time signature from Gustav Holst's Mars also. It occurs right at the 23 minute mark of that 29+ minute song.
@beenaplumber8379Ай бұрын
You keep talking over the Holst 5/4 rhythm, which is way too quiet in the first place. I'd kinda like to hear that actually. Without it your comparison wasn't meaningful to me.

That’s very easily done. Go to the streaming platform of your choice and listen to the song, as many times as you’d like, while silently counting in your head. You won’t have to deal with my voice distracting you.

Regarding counting vs feeling I have a question about the longevity of music that can't (effectively) written down. In a few hundred years or so how much late-20th century music will still be accessible compared with the music of, say, Bach, Beethoven or Joplin? As different media come and go and as file formats and operating systems change, will older recordings become lost to time? Already we see old computer games vanishing because their native hardware is gone and we don't have the source-code, so can't re-impliment them on modern hardware. I'm worried that without sheet music to 'preserve' it in a 'written' format virtually no music past the 1950's will survive more than a hundred years or so. I hope I'm wrong.
