For me it was Donald Caldwell's 1991 book "Top Guns of the Luftwaffe". It was a nice surprise to recently find his 1998 "War Diary" with some corrections and a treasure trove of pilot & aircraft details.

One of my favorite stories from the Operation Bodenplatte was where a ME-109 pilot attacked a US Base and was shot down an Quad 50cal and crash landed near the base , got out of his plane sat down and lit his pipe and waited for the American troops walking towards him to capture him

from Donald Caldwell: III/JG 54 was the first gruppe to get the 190D-9 and was still training with them on 7 Nov 1944 not returning to the front until 25 Dec with first combat on 27 Dec. II/JG 26 was the second 190D gruppe and was doing conversion training in Nov(?) and Dec prior to returning to the front with new 190Ds on 17 Dec. Their first combat was on 23 Dec. I/JG 26 flew their first mission in Doras on 24 Dec. Some of the JG 26 Stab trained with D-9s on 25 Dec and it appears their (Priller and maybe Wodarczyk) first combat was Bodenplatte.

I think there were still plenty of A8 and A9 short nosers around too. But maybe not used for this operation.

Fw 190A-8 and A-9 "short nosers" were used by other gruppen for this mission along with late model Bf 109s. SG 4 flew Fw 190F-8s. KG 51 attacked with Me 262s. Wikipedia/Bodenplatte attempts to give details.

I wondered about that ground unit. There's a photo of a downed Bodenplatte Fw 190F-8 belonging to the III Gruppe of an unknown geschwader. Guess it was SG 4.

Very good video. I usually avoid any video that censors the swastika because it eliminates the reason why Luftwaffe carried them but Army and Navy used the flags with red background for IFF purposes. Garland was hoarding the fighters for one big strike against the bombers and was very angry that they were wasted in a New Year surprise attack.

Good video. I really doubt that Bodenplatte's failings and the squandering of limited resources impacted anything in respect to the Luftwaffe's ultimate fate. Had it not happened and those resources were applied elsewhere it would not made an iota of difference except perhaps extending the war in Europe and hence the suffering by mere minutes.
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet Ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. The secrecy of Bodenplatte may have resulted in a higher loss of experienced pilots to friendly fire in a much shorter time period (months?) than would otherwise have occurred following procedures; like notifying flak units and carrying IFF transmitters. Attacking airbases was not part of the Luftwaffe's normal routine at that time and I'd say shortened the average remaining combat hours for experienced pilots compared to how long they might have lasted fighting near or over home territory.

What I do understand " How do the Germans on the ground not see the planes on the Boldenplatte mission flying over them & alot of them flying low are friendlies ? They shoot down around a quarter of the 900 planes, yeah I know they weren't informed & seeing so many they think has to be allies ( coming from the direction of Germany) right!! Just trigger happy maniacs kindly helping the enemy end the Nazi regime.

@@JeffsAirplaneCabinet: Absolutely correct friend but what I can't understand is " How did ground troops not see they were friendlies as alot were flying low so should've recognised their own birds before they blew them out the sky " which kindly helped the enemy's job that bit more easier. It was some victory 4 x P47's & 12 x P51's against the Germans 4 v 1 advantage. J.C Myers was they say a leader like no other.
@andrewblackie7170

You have a good point friend but I think even if they applied they resources elsewhere it wouldn't have prolonged the war. Most of the fighters would most probably have been used against incoming bomber missions & taken out by P51 escorts, but just an opinion friend.👍
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet 12 күн бұрын
@@andrewblackie7170 It's said the German friendly fire issues were due to flak operators not being used to seeing large formations of their own forces, and the aircraft had IFF removed as it was a surprise attack that only a few people knew about. You'd think the flak operators would have been notified during the hour or so before their own aircraft returned or there'd be some aircraft visual recognition capability. History shows that once one trigger-happy flak gunner opens fire, the rest of the herd often can't resist opening up. In late 1944, there were some in the Luftwaffe fighter arm that were unrealistically hoping to demoralize and stop the Allied daytime bombing with superior technology jets and a large reserve fighter force capable of locally overwhelming and knocking out hundreds of bombers in a single day. There was a German pilot sense of duty to keep on fighting for the sake of the civilian population. Fear of a Soviet Union occupation may have been a factor and Hitler wasn't going to surrender unconditionally as the Allies demanded. Some in the Luftwaffe may have hoped for a negotiated cease fire with other options being: overthrow a brutal regime, defect, continue to fight the Allies, or face court-martial. Very few pilots defected. Indoctrination they received as Hitler Youth may have also played a part. I'm repeating things from Donald Caldwell's books.

I heard Meyer, as Deputy CO of the 352nd Fighter Group, seemed to have a 6th sense about a German attack following New Year's Eve. As I recall, he discouraged his pilots from drinking and set up a morning patrol. He was probably lucky not to have been shot up sitting in his P-51 on the ground when Asch was attacked. Airborne P-47s distracted the attackers so the 487th squadron was able to just barely get in the air.

You forgot about the 2 ME 262s that were launched that were to make sure every pilot hit a target. If they came back without attacking anything, they were to go back and try again. On the other hand, I didn't know about them being attacked by Allied ships.

I heard on another KZbin channel that the claim "following every squadron (presumably gruppe) was a dedicated Me 262 ..." was never proven. There was no mention of 262s in Caldwell's research of JG 26 missions.

One Bren Gunner, and no Number 2?
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet Ай бұрын
Good points. The RAF Regiment had three squadrons at Grimbergen. I don't know how many found access to Bren guns during the 15 minute attack but there were five gunners firing in the video. One of them might have been silenced. All of the German aircraft were programmed to fly in rotten (pairs) in the video but the IL-2 AI don't fly tight formations when the leader is attacking. In some scenes, the wingman can be seen trying to catch up to the rotte leader.

@JeffsAirplaneCabinet
@JeffsAirplaneCabinet Ай бұрын
I also was surprised by the statement by Donald Caldwell that I repeated. There were large numbers of Luftwaffe fighters during the invasion of Poland, the “Battle of Britain”, Operation Barbarossa, the Schweinfurt raids, and Big Week. On the “Biggest Day” 15 Aug 1940, 1149 Luftwaffe fighter sorties took place spread out over much of the day and were mostly flown by 109s having a 90 min avg flight duration, so it’s unlikely more than 900 German fighters were in the air at the same time. Caldwell’s estimate of ~900 fighters (34 gruppen) taking to the air during Operation Bodenplatte presumably includes KG 51 Me 262s and SG 4 Fw 190Fs. Another source lists the Bodenplatte fighters at over 1000. When do you think the Luftwaffe may have launched a larger force?
