Hi Joy Thank you for your wonderfully explained tutorials.For me, On commercial patterns the chest needs to be reduced by about 2" on the half pattern 4" in total. Yes I have narrow shoulders and my straps fall off, hence I sew my own bras. Could you tell me, does your gapping neck line adjustment alter the with in the chest at all? I need your advise, I need to do all the adjustments in the back as you have kindly demonstrated. I need the sway back adjustment and the length added to the shoulder blade height, as I have a deep arm hole. I Only need about a quarter inch removed per side in the neck as this is the only round or curve I have there. However, there is still something wrong with the shoulder, I assume. As my dresses ride up and try to choke me. I like your draw your shoulder on the wall, how do I transfer this to my paper pattern and how will I know how much to adjust my pattern. Further I have a straight on the fold pattern. I cannot work this out!? I hope I have explained properly. Thank you Lynda
@lyndaschuch81024 жыл бұрын
Narrow chest sorry!
@Joy4650B4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure you have enough circumference around your chest? If the garment is too small there, it will try to ride up to a smaller area. You hold your pattern up to the shoulder drawing. Line up center front or center back and compare the paper pattern shoulder to the drawn shoulder on the wall. If you move the shoulder tip down, you will need to lower the armhole area equally. Hope that makes sense.
@lyndaschuch81024 жыл бұрын
Joy Bernhardt Hi Joy thank you for your reply. I shall double check. It literally feels like I should put a weight in the front hem of my dress (like a Chanel Jacket) to hold it down. I will compare the shoulders and measurements. It's rather difficult fitting myself as nobody I know sews. My husband tries, I might add unsuccessfully. Lol. Love your tutorials. Enjoy your day.
@lyndaschuch81024 жыл бұрын
Joy Bernhardt Hi Joy So We did the shoulder drawing. My front pattern is correct, but as suspected the back needs to be changed. I have chevron drag lines wth a point at my CB neckline going down to the side waist seams. Which the shoulder angle adjustment will fix. I need to increase the height of the neck point. When I increase this and adjust the pattern correctly at the neck and shoulder angle, which looks wonderful. It distorts the rest of my pattern. It looks all skew! How do I redraw this? Do you have any advise? I am battling because I need to do every adjustment / tuneup but cannot work out in which order to do them? Please be so kind to assist thank you Lynda

Thanks for showing this way to correct the gapping problem at the neck. I do have a question, though. Why does it follow that if you correct the gap at the neck that the side dart should be changed? Just trying to understand. Thanks in advance.
@carolmorris1516 жыл бұрын
Just so the pattern will lie flat.
@livianicolae20376 жыл бұрын
Joy, you are filled with joy!😊Great method. But what if I have a french dart in the front? How should I manipulate that neckline gap? Thank you so much!
@Joy4650B6 жыл бұрын
exactly the same. Slice to the apex and make the french dart a little bigger.
@livianicolae20376 жыл бұрын
+Joy Bernhardt Ok, thank you! English is not my native language so I'm not sure if I made myself understood. I have a dart starting from the waist and going to the bust, but it doesn't have a pointy edge at the waistline, the pattern is sliced on a 90 degree angle. So when I cut " to, but not through", I mess up the existing dart and create a void under the armhole. 😞

Joy you do such a good job explaining the adjustments to patterns. I make patterns for home decor so when I teach someone how to make patterns it’s not that easy to explain what’s in your head. How did you figure out how much to take out of the pattern. Is it trial and error on every pattern.
@chrismurphy50135 жыл бұрын
Joy, thank you so much for your willingness to teach. I absolutely love they way you explain the methods. I have a question on bustlines, I have none! Lol , although, in have very broad shoulders so often times I can cross my arms well but the front of the shirt is to big in the just, I look awful. Can you explain how to reduce the just or darts. After you have made these adjustments, do you then need to make adjustments to the bottom hem? Looks to me like the front and back will not match up for the hem.
@Joy4650B6 жыл бұрын
If your hems are not correct after those adjustments, you did NOT need them. If the adjustments are required, there is too much fabric or too little fabric and the hem is off if you do not make the corrections.
@joycehayhow85 жыл бұрын
Joy, I just found you a couple of days ago have been binge watching your videos. I’m learning so much. Thank you! I have all of the same sizing issues you have...bony top, rounded back, sway back and sloping right shoulder. The sloping shoulder has always caused my clothes to hang off center because it pulls my neck area to the right. I’m still confused about how to fix it. You said you cut your pattern out the same for both sides then lower the shoulder and arm hole on the right side. I don’t understand how that would work after you have cut it out. Do you have to trace your pattern as a full front & back, lower the the right side then not cut on the fold? I hope this makes sense.
@Joy4650B5 жыл бұрын
It is easy to fix the shoulder AFTER the fabric is cut out. I come down 1/4" on front and back (that makes 1/2") below the seamline at the outer shoulder edge and draw a diagonal line from there up to the original seamline at the neck shoulder edge. Then I cut the armhole down 1/2" at the side seam edge and angle it smoothly up to about the notch to nothing. I will show it in my next video.
@joycehayhow85 жыл бұрын
Now this makes sense to me. Thank you! I was thinking that I would need to cut a square around the arm hole and lower it down. I wasn’t recognizing that it automatically would be lowered with shoulder adjustment and then I could cut fabric at the bottom. You are so generous with sharing your knowledge. I hope I get proficient enough to play your kindness forward someday.❤️

I just came back to watch these tips again! They are soooo good! I was going to ask if you do these changes right off the bat, no matter what? Thanks again for this info! I’m thinking I need all these too! 😉
@Joy4650B6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do do them right away in every commercial pattern. since they are all the same,and my body is always the same. That is why I sew. I like things to fit me.
@ppuyle16 жыл бұрын
Joy Bernhardt Thanks Joy! It’s great you have all these little tweaks figured out!
@ppuyle16 жыл бұрын
Joy Bernhardt I meant to ask too....do you find all the commercial patterns similar in sizing? So you’d pick the same size across the board? (Most of the time)
@Joy4650B6 жыл бұрын
Yes. And I buy them by my upper bust size. Pants: my hip size.
@janetdupree63536 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your alterations demo. I have a question. When adjusting for the front neckline, you increased the size of the bust dart. Doesn’t that increase the fullness (space for bust)? I thought the breadth of bust dart in the side seem was relative to the fullness of the “bump”! Small bumps need small darts, and big bumps need big darts.
@Joy4650B6 жыл бұрын
No. It doesn't do that at all. It is just absorbing the "dart" that was in the wrong place -- if that makes sense.
@janetdupree63536 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying. I will work on absorbing the concept. You explain things very well.

I am new to really sewing like you do. This was a great tutorial but can I do this even if the pattern does not have a bust dart? Like I said I am new to this. I have only sewn simple stuff.

Depending on your shape, you may need to put a bust dart in it. You could cut the front neck over to the armhole if there is not a bust dart.
