When I had my first experiences with OCD I thought I was some kind of monster because all my life I was told OCD is when you like cleaning and being organized, and here I was having graphic intrusive thoughts about killing people and repeating the number "3" in my head 9 times so my dog wouldn't die.

THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T GET DIAGNOSED UNTIL LAST YEAR LOL. I am 25 years old in grad school 😂 I didn't seek help until finally after a year of a disturbing phrase repeating in my head like a broken record, triggering panic and the need to "correct" it every time, to the point of interrupting my tasks and real conversations on a daily basis. It's still happening, but not to the degree of interrupting my daily life. Thanks to therapy I can kinda sorta manage it lol. But yeah, OCD isn't nearly as trivial as the mainstream stereotype paints it to be 😬 I'm now all for educating people about it so people like us don't have to live for over 2 decades scared of being called a psychopath for the things we don't even choose to go through our heads lol

@cosmic2750 7 ай бұрын
@overlordfemto7523you have zero idea what you're talking about. Hormones are what control your body. In every medical way. Serotonin is a hormone. Oxytocin is a hormone. Imbalance in those both cause your body to fundamentally change (whether externally or internally). The brain is fundamentally altered by mental illnesses, which are caused by hormonal imbalance. Women are "women" because medically, they have higher estrogen than testosterone. If you were to cause that imbalance and make your estrogen levels go higher than testosterone, you would medically be the definition of a woman. The question of sexuality is a different subject, but you are *scientifically* incorrect here. Medicines control hormones. Hormones control your immune system. Hormones literally govern your entire body. As such causing hormonal change by external means DOES change your body in fundamental ways. And...how does surgery not change? It is literally changing the entire body. Do you even know what "surgery" means? Go to a library and read a goddamn dictionary.

Do we also talk about the Vikings ? They are from the medieval ages, not ancient times, sure, but still ! A study by researchers at Stockholm and Uppsala Universities and published in the American Journal of Anthropology provided the first archaeological evidence that women held high-status positions in Viking culture by analyzing an elaborate Viking Age grave in Sweden that holds the remains of a decorated female warrior from the 10th century. Several weapons were buried alongside the body, including a sword, armor-piercing arrows, a battle knife, an axe, a spear and two shields, indicating that the skeleton was likely that of a warrior. Accompanying the wide array of weapons were two horses and a full set of game pieces and a gaming board. The gaming pieces suggest that the person buried was a high-ranking combatant who was knowledgeable of strategies and tactics.

Totally agree on the first mental illness one. I’m really fed up of the mainstream conversation around mental illness focusing pretty much exclusively on depression and anxiety, and specifically on more socially acceptable symptoms. I had a severe psychotic episode this summer, and it was so ugly and terrifying, and it put me in some really dangerous situations. I really feel like we need to start recognising that lucidity is absolutely a privilege, that those who are hospitalised/ sectioned/ imprisoned/ made homeless due to mental illness also deserve to be treated with compassion, respect and dignity, and that medical trauma is often the inevitable result of institutional violence towards mentally ill people. Anyway, I wrote a whole essay, but would be very interested to see The Queer Kiwi explore this topic more.

very much agree with this, and in a similar vein im sick of the vilification of (particularly cluster b) personality disorders. i've got bpd myself and i am neither an "uwu yandere boyfriend" nor an "inherently abusive evil person". im just a guy with abandonment issues and difficulty controlling my anger. yeah it sometimes affects other people. no it's not an excuse and yes i apologise after splitting or raging and try to make up for it when im calm. sometimes people with bpd are abusive. not all of us are and those who are still deserve to get therapy so that they can be reintegrated with society and stop hurting those around them. people will romanticize this idea of being mentally ill, where it's just a sanitized version of depression/anxiety that can be cured with love, and that's harmful both to people who actually suffer from the "acceptable" mental illnesses (bc y'all are so eager to support ppl with depression until they don't wash for a week and their house becomes unhygenic) and those who suffer from "unacceptable" mental illnesses which contradict the stuff we've decided is morally important (people with low empathy spring to mind. literally it does not mean they cant be compassionate they're not bad people what are you talking about). it isnt the job of the abused to have sympathy for their abusers, idc why my mum and my bullies treated me the way they did, i don't want to forgive them and i shouldnt have to. but it is the job of society as a whole to provide help for both the abuser and the victim so that they can live a better life. im not gonna be my mum's therapist bc i hate her but god knows she needs one just as much as i do.

I like this tweet about mental illness symptoms so much. People (somewhat) empathize with you if you have symptoms they can relate to (roughly, sadness or anxiety); but tell them about stuff they have never experienced themselves (in my case, dissociation) and they freak the heck out and suddely judge and/or avoid you. Yes. It also reminded me personally of, well, a lot of animals, like lions. Do you know what they do when the lionesses are in heat? The courtship lasts for a while and they can mate several times a day. It's often short periods, pause, then again, for countless times. And lions can reproduce more than once in their lifetime. It's actually even natural to mate for bonding / feeling good reasons in animals, not just reproduction. Even if does often occur at the same time because animals don't have protection. But need further proof? We have bulls that will attempt it with other bulls, lionesses with other lionesses (on camera), many more cases. It may not be as common but it does exist. So the whole "it's not natural" arguement is bs. They only say that about things they don't like. What about the hyper intelligent birds or octopus? They seem as intelligent as us sometimes. I had life-saving surgery (in the US) that was a relatively simple, laproscopic procedure and it still cost $100k including ER visit, 3 day hospital stay, ambulance, tests, surgery and pathology. That's the total bill, but my insurance reduced it (that's when they tell the hospital "no, you can't charge $X we'll pay you $Y and you can't bill the patient for the rest), then paid about half and I had to pay around $3k. So, what the hospital charges is what they want to get, not what they actually get. I'm not saying it isn't astronomical, it is! It's just the game that's played between the health care system and the insurance system for everyone to try to get what they want. I also have to mention I have very good insurance, better than most in the US.

These people who think you should only have sex to make babies are usually the same people who say men won't stay in sexless relationships. The average person has 1.93 kids (us), and apparently, the average amount sexual encounters before conception is 78 over a period of 6 months. So, doing a lil bit of maths, the average person would only have sex 156 times in their lifetime. Average life expectancy is 77 years (us), minus the average age of loss of virginity (16.9), the average person is having sex 2.6 times a year. Sounds like lots of fun.

the amount of people who think body positivity is "encouraging people to be unhealthy" is astounding. im convinced theyre all willfully ignorant. its not that hard to understand wanting to accept your body as it is. then again these are the same people who think mental health is just "people prioritizing being happy over health" which is oversimplified but its like, mental health IS health. literally half the battle is being mentally well. they go hand in hand.

For all the close-minded and conservative takes my mother holds, I always get happy when I remember her reaction to Luisa, from the movie Encanto. I was preparing myself to hear her say something sexist, but she was like "Oh, totally makes sense. women tend to be pretty strong in reality". I was happy for a moment because, yes, my mother is transphobic and homophobic, and no, she can't fathom how women can express themselves as anything else than petite, fragile and to be protected, but my mum grew up in the ranch. My mother grew up with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. She knows women can be strong. She knows women ARE strong. She just prefers not to show it. She's just so closed in her beliefs and wants (as in, she likes feeling protected, but I mean, who wouldn't?) that she doesn't feel like she can show it. It's both sad and makes sense.

Insurance companies are terrible here in the US. A doctor can say that a person needs a procedure done and they will deny it and claim that their doctor says the person doesn’t need it. Then your doctor has to fill out paperwork and you have to fight the insurance company in order to have it done, if you’re lucky, it gets done. My dad’s doctor ordered a procedure to go in and check on a blockage in his neck ( they won’t know until they get in there if it can be fixed with medication, if he will have to have stints put in or if they will have to open heart surgery). If they have to do surgery, they will do it right away. His insurance company denied it and said their doctor said he didn’t need it ( their doctor didn’t even see him). My dad’s doctor filled out paperwork and fought it and he’s finally having it done, a month later ( his doctor did put him on medication in the meantime, bloodthinners, to try and help keep the blockage from erupting.) Insurance companies suck here.

It makes me think that homosexuality (or let's say people experiencing sexuality with their own sex) must have been a lot more common that it is commonly believed throughout history when no reliable contraceptives were available.

They had ways to prevent pregnancy, also in general they had more kids and in older civilisations they killed infants they didn't want. @@princessconsuela398 Aura is a "health technology" company started by a woman named Lima Jevremovic. The explanation for the technology surrounding their products was unclear the last time I tried to check for a concrete definition, but the best way I can describe it is the "virtual reality" category. Lima claims that bringing people (homeless addicts in recovery have been her main test subjects) back to the most traumatic experiences of their lives through VR, they can then supposedly deal with and move on from this trauma. Lima herself is sketchy and has put one of her sisters, Bam Margera, and countless other homeless addicts under conservatorships (like Britney was in) so she can control their lives. If you want to know more, check out the channel BJ Investigates videos on Lima. edited to add: oh and Amanda Rabb, one of the recovering addicts under her care, died while using Aura treatments. the way i see it, mental illness is an explanation, not an excuse. i often fall off the planet when my anxiety/depression get really bad. like, months of zero contact with friends. and i feel bad! it isn't my 'fault', but it IS my responsibility to mitigate hurting my loved ones. luckily, they are very patient people, but if i just let myself ignore people and avoid them whenever times got tough, and just said 'oh you cant be mad or hurt, it was my anxiiiieeettyyyy' i would be a bad person. i would never blame someone with a mental illness for their struggles and symptoms, but i would be upset if they used those as a reason to invalidate MY feelings without doing anything to try and prevent bad behavior.

Never forget that your thoughts are in your brain, and your brain makes thoughts by releasing chemicals, so "there's a chemical effect caused that makes you more relaxed/calm/whatever" it might be direct, but it also might be "it's fun so you feel better". The opposite is "depression is a chemical imbalance", which is true, and some people do purely have a chemical problem that needs to be directly fixed, but changing patterns of thinking also changes chemicals. It's why CBT helps and why treating it is harder than treating a broken leg.

So that heart surgery one is mostly likely from the USA, where healthcare costs an arm and a leg because they hate taxes and think that the best way to encourage peak health is to make them pay for any medical care. The thing about that is, that in countries with free healthcare, the frequency of having to actually do high-cost medical procedures is actually lower because the standards for what is considered healthy is higher and not based solely on appearance and weight regardless of muscle tissue. For example a skinny anorexic 90lbs 20 year old woman is considered healthy by USA standards, despite needing medical interventions due to being severely malnourished, but in the aforementioned free healthcare countries, a 200lbs 20 year old woman who has quite a lot of muscles due to being athletic is considered healthy, because all their organs function well and they aren't malnourished. The USA just really has such a toxic system, and it doesn't stop at healthcare.

The episofe is pretty comedic but it also analyses the romantization of mental illness, the pressure put on neurodivergent indivuals by concepts like the "savant syndrome", and how they are shunned whenever the symptoms result in them acting in any negative way except sad. I really recommend it.
