Wow! Dogs are so amazing. I taught school at a Juvenile Detention center in TX and we had students in a program called P.A.W.S. I don't remember what that got but Inmates that had worked hard to improve behavior were paired with a dog from our local Humane Society and they trained the dogs. There was a gentleman who visited periodically to teach the girls how to train their dogs. When the dogs were trained to pass a rigid test and become certified, they were adopted out by the humane society. It was generally a win-win situation. The dog's life was saved and the girls learned many life skills as well as possible training to help them find jobs when they were released.

These videos are really helpful! I am training my pup some of these skills at home. He's not training to be a service dog as I don't have a disability and he's a little "high-strung" for service work, but I wanted to build some new skills to keep his mind sharp and work on overall obedience. So far, he's loving it!

re watching your videos it still really hurts to try but i will do it we miss you so much but your not suffering anymore. youve left a huge impact on so many people including myself if it wasnt for you and this chanle i would have never found out about eds and would have kept ignoring my symptoms. now im waiting on genetics to find out what type of eds i have. you also intrudused me into the wonderfull world of service dogs.you tought us to always keep fighting and were not in it alone. Im getting my prospect in a month hes a gsd. ik it prob didnt mean much to you when you would anwser my coments but it ment the world to me. i love you jaquie even tho we never met and iv only seen you online it still hurts really bad i know us fans dont have much of a right to miss you as badly and most of us to but we do anyway. thanks Jacquie I've been following you and Harlow on ig for a while I get lots of tips for your training and add it with my training for my service pup. I also like how you always educate people on disabilities and how they are not always visible I run into a lot of issues when I go out to the store or wherever with my pup and I don't have his vest cause legally he doesn't need to wear it even though he is really well trained and still training. ppl in California are just not as educated when it comes to ppl with disabilities or how to approach them. so thank you for educating

This video has been super helpful for us! Coco's biggest issue is to try to turn around or jump up while backing, but we're getting there with these exercises. She already turns and starts and stops with me well. Backing has been our hurdle.

can you show us in more detail how you got harlow to follow you around the stool going in the opposite of your normal turn? (sorry if that is very confusing) we are working on rear end awareness to help with her feeling and we can do right turns very well because she is on my left but when I do a left turn with her it doesn't go very smoothly 😅

I don't know how big your dog is, but I used a laundry basket and had my SD get in that and had her tuck. Because of the way the basket is shaped, her tail is tucked naturally. Practice, oh, 200 times, and she finally started doing it on her own while out in public.

Just having a chronic illness does not by itself make one automatically eligible to have a service dog; there have to be specific *functional* impairments that trained tasks a dog can perform can help ameliorate. This could also include alerting to things like altered blood sugar levels, impending seizures, or other types of medical conditions. If that describes you, then you can either try to get a dog from a "program" like CCI (Canine Companions for Independence) or you can get your own dog and train it yourself. There are a number of online resources and books for helping a person learn to owner-train, including several Facebook groups. Hope this helps!

My SDIT is a Chihuahua. She already knows 50+ commands, but she's always been shy of feet. (Which makes sense, she's 7lbs!) But it made it hard to help her gain confidence. So I used some high quality treats, and whenever she didn't react to a foot movement, I rewarded her. I have since moved on to touching a foot to her side, and it seems to be helping. Is this the right way to be doing this?

Aw bless her! It sounds like you're doing a very good job of gently desensitising her to foot movements using positive reinforcement. Desensitisation is absolutely fine and a brilliant thing to do, you just need to take it at their pace in order to ensure you're not making anything worse. Again, it sounds like you're doing everything right! If you're touching her with your foot, just keep a really keen eye on any stress signals she may be making, like licking, paw lift etc. If she does any of those, take a step back, little pause and try something a little easier :)

My girlfriend has a brain injury and we are trying to train a mobility service dog ourselves. We tried the exercise where you back up with the treat but she just gets behind her when she walks toward her because she is used to moving out of the way when my girlfriend comes toward her. Any suggestions?

You will have to corral her in an enclosed area that is narrow enough that she *can't* get behind your girlfriend. This may mean a narrow hallway, perhaps with a box or table set up, or between two tables, etc., spaced so that there is only room for the two of them side-by-side, and no room for the dog to move in any direction but back. Start with one step at a time, though, just like Jacquie demonstrated here. You may have to retrain what she does when your girlfriend approaches, though. *Why* does she do that anyways?

Sparrow Highlyf and you can use any treats, I use the dollar coin sized treats and break them into thirds or quarters

It's a clicker made for the purpose, but if you find it difficult to use one, you can also use your voice with some distinctive word like "Yesss!". The point is to be able to cue the dog *immediately* that it has just done what you want it to do, faster than you could ever get a treat to it. It will then learn that the treat follows, and learn to wait for it. The overall idea is that the dog learns to associate the two well enough that eventually the clicker can be phased out - and the treat phased out as well.

I have a client with low vision who uses a wheelchair. She has many disabilities and wants to have a service dog instead of a Guide dog. I have left messages and emailed many different schools across the country and I'm having a hard time getting someone to respond. Is it because I'm not the one wanting the dog? Also, we are looking for ways to raise money for her because we know it's very expensive to have a service dog. Any suggestions? Thanks, big fan.

I would try and go through a regular dog trainer who has lots of certifiable service dog training work. That's what I'm doing since all the service dog training programs that only focus on training service dogs in my area are for either guide dogs or dogs for veterans with ptsd

there are many nonprofit organizations that train service and guide dogs for anywhere from $300-4,000 which is often much cheaper than paying for weekly training or buying a service dog from a breeder. because your client is disabled and I am assuming this is their first or second service dog, i would not recommend that they train they dog themselves simply because of the many training hours needed that can be difficult with their health. I would also recommend having the dog do some guide work in addition to whatever mobility work they may need. There are many nonprofits all over the country its just a matter of finding one in your state that you and your client like and feel comfortable working with!!! Good Luck!!

I am a huge fan. I would like to know however what some of the purposes are to the training that you did in the mall. It looked to me like you had a dog stand between your legs. I couldn't tell if it was you and the other girl because I'm legally blind but I knew it was one of you. Also, why was it important to switch dogs?
