I used to live in San Bernardino, that mall has been issue for so long… I left 14 years ago and even in 2008 it was dead and already had no open stores, I’m surprised it’s still there.. it’s sad what has become of San Bernardino..

It cost $15.00 a square feet to demolish a mall. Which means whoever wants to build over it has to pay and the mall is 43 acres big, which means it's gonna cost $30 million, just to get it demolished and flattened.

There was a "Demolition Ceremony" this morning hosted by mayor Helen Tran. And now demolition can finally commence. And as a San Bernardino native, it makes me sad that our storied mall now starts her final chapter, bringing the Carousel Mall story to an end. And the fact is is that the city has long had the resources to save and redevelop the building, but the city never did. And that inaction caused Carousel Mall to become an eyesore, an embarrassment, an attractive nuisance and a death trap. Carousel Mall didn't deserve this kind of ending. Thank you Carousel Mall. You will be missed. I will treasure my lifetime cache of memories and remember you fondly. Even in your decline. And you will always be a part of San Bernardino's heart and culture. And today officially marks the start of the end of the Carousel Mall story.

He chose to take this risk, based on what he thought he knew, not what he didnt know. This location had no public liabilities, so they cant be sued, based on B & E and the motive. Plumbing isnt dangerous, if you shut it off prior to removal. Wouldnt you think, power should be off for stripping wiring? He had no idea, I hope it was fast & he didnt suffer when it happened.

I remember going to this place as a kid. With the arcade down stairs and KB toys up stairs. The circle round white seats in the middle and the fountain. What killed this Mall was the inland center mall and ontario mills.

Yep and remember different events used to happen a lot across the street from the inland center mall and it wasn't too far from the restaurants, best buy and all that. Also I remember a lot of people used chill by the carousel mall during route 66 as well. I remember IMAX or AMC(can't remember) built a movie theater like really close to the carousel mall and I think that closed too. Once Ontario Mills opened in like 95 or 96(I think it was), it was a wrap.

It's not uncommon for malls to stand for decades after they close. The costs of demolishing them is prohibitive, and there's always some investment group dreaming of re-opening them (and conning people to invest in the venture).

@@xaenon I only know Dixie Square, where Blues Brothers was filmed. Open 15 years, extremely profitable the first 2 or 3, but crime moved right in almost immediately. The area, Harvey, IL is a cesspool. Nobody wanted it because it's a sh*thole. Also full of asbestos. It's also quite a ways from lovely Park Ridge, where they got pulled over.
@xaenon
@xaenon 2 жыл бұрын
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 I was going to mention Dixie Square. I know they renovated and stocked a portion of the mall just so they could destroy it for the film, lol. It stood vacant like two more decades after the film was made, IIRC. And being a product of its era, OF COURSE it was full of asbestos. In Detroit, the Packard factory is STILL standing, at least as late as last year. They haven't made Packards since the Eisenhower administration. I know, not a mall, but basically the same set of problems. A large, out-of-date structure, an area riddled with crime, too expensive to bulldoze, lots of grand plans to renovate or preserve, and nothing being done as it crumbles into rubble.

that mall was so lit when i was 5. i used to love going there. now that place is just a memory, and probably going to get demolished. i believe it could be a good mall again, but it’s neglected. last time i went was when i was a teen, and it was sooo dead, the only thing my mom and i did was eat chinese food and most of the stores were closed at that point.

Come on, thieves get what they deserve. Anyone could walk into a city college and get into trades/college FOR NOTHING. Did it, that's how I know. FAFSA grants or whatever grant covers the trades. You pay 0. No excuses. If people want assistance, they shouldn't get to mooch for all their illegitimate kids brought into the world to pay for drugs or support momma being lazy. They'll put them all together and buy drugs/prostitute/whatever, and leave the kids with nothing. See Anthony Sowell. How those kids lived. If you want cash, you should HAVE TO be getting an education or working on trades. Or you get ZERO. Shouldn't pay you to be a disgrace to society or your family.

Used to work at a High School....one morning during a walk around campus by the football field discovered they had stolen the power cables bringing power from street to distributing panel....cables were 1-1/2 in diameter...high voltage going through them. Scavenging for copper....how they did it without getting fried I don't know. But it sure wasn't worth the risk in my opinion.
