There was a "Demolition Ceremony" this morning hosted by mayor Helen Tran. And now demolition can finally commence. And as a San Bernardino native, it makes me sad that our storied mall now starts her final chapter, bringing the Carousel Mall story to an end. And the fact is is that the city has long had the resources to save and redevelop the building, but the city never did. And that inaction caused Carousel Mall to become an eyesore, an embarrassment, an attractive nuisance and a death trap. Carousel Mall didn't deserve this kind of ending. Thank you Carousel Mall. You will be missed. I will treasure my lifetime cache of memories and remember you fondly. Even in your decline. And you will always be a part of San Bernardino's heart and culture. And today officially marks the start of the end of the Carousel Mall story.

It's not uncommon for malls to stand for decades after they close. The costs of demolishing them is prohibitive, and there's always some investment group dreaming of re-opening them (and conning people to invest in the venture).
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr28232 жыл бұрын
@@xaenon I only know Dixie Square, where Blues Brothers was filmed. Open 15 years, extremely profitable the first 2 or 3, but crime moved right in almost immediately. @xaenon2 жыл бұрын
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 I was going to mention Dixie Square. I know they renovated and stocked a portion of the mall just so they could destroy it for the film, lol. It stood vacant like two more decades after the film was made, IIRC. And being a product of its era, OF COURSE it was full of asbestos. In Detroit, the Packard factory is STILL standing, at least as late as last year. They haven't made Packards since the Eisenhower administration. I know, not a mall, but basically the same set of problems. A large, out-of-date structure, an area riddled with crime, too expensive to bulldoze, lots of grand plans to renovate or preserve, and nothing being done as it crumbles into rubble.

Used to work at a High School....one morning during a walk around campus by the football field discovered they had stolen the power cables bringing power from street to distributing panel....cables were 1-1/2 in diameter...high voltage going through them. Scavenging for copper....how they did it without getting fried I don't know. But it sure wasn't worth the risk in my opinion.

Even though the guy was probably homeless I find it disturbing that the news didn’t even report on who he was or if you had any family or if anybody even cared for him. They completely figure out about the human factors. The only want the ratings

SAD, THAT HE HAD TO GO OUT LIKE THAT & ON HIS OWN TOO, YEAH THAT'S BAD. HE MAY HAVE BEEN UP TO 'MISCHIEF' IN AN ABANDONED BUILDING, BUT IN ALL FAIRNESS IT'S BEING DEMOLISHED ANY TIME SOON! AT LEAST HE WASN'T OUT ROBBING PEOPLE OR HOMES OR WORSE? IT'S JUST SADDENING HE LOST HIS LIFE DOING IT. MY THOUGHTS & COLLEAGUES GO OUT TO HIS FAMILY & FRIENDS, THEY'RE THE ONES LEFT BEHIND. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THEM ALL. GOD BLESS YOU. 🙏🏼

When do we get housing for people that WORK, again? You should have to be in mandatory drug treatment and college/trade school. No free rides! The programs are FREE, though.
