Body found in wheel well on United flight from Chicago to Maui

This is a stupid, irresponsible report. I am a professional pilot for a major airline. If you are contemplating jumping in a wheel well to get somewhere, don’t. This is suicidal. The wheel well is crowded and nothing to hang on to. What you can hang onto moves and will not hesitate to crush you. The oxygen isn’t just low, it’s nonexistent, unpressurized at 30,000 feet is not survivable for more than a few minutes. And the cold, can be 70 degrees below zero easily. For HOURS. Crushed, wounded, no oxygen, and then frozen. Then the gear comes down when you have no idea it’s coming, even if you are still alive you’re likely to fall out and the last few thousand feet to the ground. Then the “reporter” here goes on to tell stories of people surviving multiple passages as a “stowaway”. But that was INSIDE the cabin as a passenger. Completely unrelated to this story. Leading people to believe the two stories are interchangeable, and that the wheel well is survivable. This is very poor reporting, trying to turn different news into a story for lack of substance. If you are going to do a story, research better and focus on facts versus hype and emotion. The real story here is that someone was either really desperate, or they were really stupid, or both. Gained access to something that got them killed. Do NOT do it! And stop making up these stupid ”reports” and trying to sell yourself as an expert. It’s just for views. Everybody wants to be a KZbin star. You’re not….

So not a good way to save money. I had an uncle who used to save money by shipping himself as a dead body to relatives, who would open the coffin as soon as they got away from the airport. It was really cheap, but one time they got his coffin mixed up with somebody else's, and we didn't find out until it was too late. The funeral was the next day, and uncle was inside the coffin, banging on the lid, yelling, but nobody was brave enough to open it. The undertaker said it was "reflex action", and they buried him. So that ain't a good way to save money either.

Stowaways normally get into undercarriage after the aircraft have taxied away from the ramp and post pre-flight inspection.

Pilots do the pre-flight not maintenance in most airlines so unless they had a mechanical issue of some kind Line Maintenance won't usually look until a night stop.

Bigtime. There is a ramp mech channel called “Stig” he takes you through ramp checks on American Air in LA. He definitely does the checks.

The inspection is made with the plane standing on its wheels, on land, a while before the flight. Presumably, the person managed to get into the space right before the flight.

I remember a similar incident happened in Massachusetts about ten years ago. A 16 year-old boy from North Carolina climbed into the wheel well of a plane flying from Charlotte to Boston. On approach into Boston, the pilots lowered the landing gear and the boy's frozen body fell from 3000 feet and landed right on the front lawn of a home in Milton, MA. There's no excuse for why this type of thing continues to happen.

I can remember several of these incidents over the years. Same thing, they find someone DOA when the plane lands, or they fall out frozen solid when the plane lowers its landing gear. The only thing that kind of tops this, is those people in Afghanistan who held onto the outside of the plane (which was evacuating people to the US). As the plane took off (and gained a fair amount of height) you could see a few folks fall to their deaths. It was a very sad and scary sight, I was actually surprised that some were able to hold on for those seconds after "wheels up."

Not only is there no heat to survive at that altitude, not only is there no oxygen to survive that altitude, even if there was oxygen there isn't enough air pressure to put the oxygen into your lungs at that altitude. But the wheelwell is a place where the pilot is supposed to check when he does his walk around so once again we see pilots not doing their due diligence. And this doesn't even begin to mention an unauthorized person giving themselves access to the apron of an airport.

Desperate people do unusual things. The stowaway would've been absolutely needy. In 2015 a man walked 31 miles to Britain from France through the Channel Tunnel dodging trains travelling at 100 mph. He had fled from a war torn country and was arrested on arrival in the UK but later released by a judge at Canterbury Crown Court in 2016. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else but admired him for walking all that way in a dark tunnel all by himself. 🇬🇧.

With the technology at hand, why is the Airline Industry(especially the FAA making it mandatory)not putting cameras in wheel wells and any other part of the plane where a person could hide? Yes it's understandable that every extra ounce of weight adds up to the total weight of the planes. But we're talking about High - Tech cameras that are small and weight very little compared to someone who stowaways on a plane(Average U.S. female weight is 170.8lbs./Average U.S. male weight is 199.8lbs.) The safety concerns outway the extra camera weight significantly, example being an airplane wheel well stowaway who is a suicide - bomber 💥, I think this question is quite obviously a very ansible one. What say the FAA and Airline Industry if not already in place(and if it is why hasn't these wheel well stowaways been detected) But if not been implemented, WHY NOT!?!

The level of professionalism by maintenance and operations at US based carriers is simply superb. Literally walking down your own sidewalk puts you are far more risk of an accident that being in an aircraft. Statistically the safest place on this planet is sitting inside an aircraft at 39000 feet going 600 mph. So I think your rationale is in question. The individual probably climbed in in Brazil and the body wasnt found in Chicago. Quite a long flight with a lot of movement that didnt dislodge the corpse. I feel sorry for the trauma of the person in Maui who found it.

Happens at Heathrow often. Stowaways think the area around the wheel will be OK to travel in but do not realise their bodies will freeze & when the landing gear drops so do they. They have fallen in gardens & on roads, last on the roof of an office building near a High Street. Clapham & Richmond mostly. If their frozen bodies were to fall on a person, a child....
