That area in Joliet is ridiculous to get around in with the road construction, one-way roads, bridges raised, barricades, dead-end streets. I’m not familiar with Joliet and had to get across the river to visit my LO in a nursing home. A 30-minute drive each way took me 90-minutes each way due to all the confusion. My GPS wasn’t working one day in May and I’m glad it was daylight because I could have easily ended up in the water had it been night. It was a horrible and aggravating drive and I felt trapped.

@@TiredEmpath that’s sounds awful. I always read my map before following gps because it is not always accurate. I’ve been through there but not enough to recall. But I do know it can get congested. Prob what happened in his case. There should be lit up signs.

@@skchrist1st704 Great points about lit signs and reading the map before you go. I did to “know” my route but the closed roads and raised bridges threw me off. There are still detours everywhere including some ramps for I-80 (if you can even find I-80). In my case I would take 53 straight south and head west across abridge, any open bridge, but with the closures and detours and GPS out that particular day, forget it! 😬

There was a similar situation last year with a young lady driving in an unfamiliar area in the suburbs, at night and ended up driving into a pond. They had stories on the news of her family looking for her. After a couple of days her car was found completely submerged. There was a couple of incidents a few years ago of cars that drove into the Chicago River off of a dead end street. Driving at night in dark unfamiliar areas requires being extremely observant.

The most horrible story I recall happened over a decade ago in Traverse City, Michigan. An anesthesiologist was taking her 7-yr-old daughter and three of the little girl's friends, to a show in the city. It was dark, cold, and raining that night. Dr. Gillooly did not see the sign indicating "boat ramp" and drove into the lake, killing all of them. Tragic accidents such as this one are really not that uncommon.

My condolences to his family and friends. 🙏 I think it’s an unfair leap that he was suicidal or intoxicated. Here’s why: I’ve had to drive around raised bridges, multiple closed roads, one-way streets, and barriers, completely lost in an area (Joliet) I’m unfamiliar with in May/June. One day, my GPS wasn’t working while trying to visit my LO in a Nursing Home. I HAD to cross the Des Plaines River to get there and get home. What SHOULD have been a 30-minute drive each way was a 90-minute drive each way. I was going in circles. It was so aggravating. I hate driving into Joliet with all the road construction and dead end streets. If it were nighttime, I could have easily ended up in the water and I was totally sober. That day was the worst driving experience I’ve ever had in my life. 🧐😬

The news played the interview of his friend he visited in Joliet stating that Rev. Beard did say it was getting late and time to get going. He went to the bathroom, left the friend, returned thinking he forgot his phone, and left again as his friend watched him pull off in his car. His friend and pastor said Rev. Beard was his regular upbeat self. Why then would his friend have to follow Mr. Beard home? If something was off, wouldn't the friend notify his wife? Why would Rev. Beard not call his own wife, pastor or older sons? How did the friend or any one else suspicious get the car through all those barricades and into the water without being seen in the footage yet with Mr. Beard in the driver's seat! You think the offender/s were that desperate to play around in dark dirty cold river water to switch his body into the driver's seat and then swim away!?? Of course this is not adding up-. a church man in a murky river for 7 days is unbelievable and confusing to everyone!?
