when i got older, (i'm 77 now) i had a minor traffic violation. i don't recall what it was, but it was something along the lines of not stopping completely at a stop sign, or something equally silly. the cop asked me to get out. he was eyeing me up (i'm a big guy) and as i was getting out, i told him, _"I'm too smart to fight, and too tired to run. Don't worry about me."_ after i got out, i handed him my car keys and stepped over to the ffront of his cruiser. he relaxed a lot when i did that. after my ID check, he gave me a warning and wished me a safe night.

As a corrections officer I always get nervous when a guy refuses to lock up and go to his cell or won’t come out of his cell or takes a little too long to come out….9/10 it’s a sign something is about to go down. When a guy won’t follow a simple command he has already decided he’s got nothing to lose….even if it means his life. Cop had great reaction time considering he drew from his holster. Hope he’s ok.
@justforever966 ай бұрын
I mean he was on 10/10 guard at that point, the situation was clearly dangerous and the guy was up to something. I guess it depends on how you want to classify reaction time. Yes he saw and reacted to the threat, but it's but quite the same as a guy reacting to a sudden threat, recognizing it and taking action. At least I would measure them under different standards. Notice how he not only drew and fired but he also stopped firing when he saw his partner run around the front of the truck into his crossfire. That's easy to mess up when in reaction mode and you get tunnel vision on the threat.

@Craig Wooldridge I got the wrong term, I actually meant Hispanic, a lot of Hispanics Americans refer themselves as Latinos as a short for Latin American, which include Portuguese spoken Brazil. About double negatives, in Spanish are meant to reinforce or strongly remark a negative expression rather that creating a positive due to language structure and Hispanic culture but there are exceptions

This is why i get a little annoyed when people are always like "we need to have higher fitness standards for officers, we need to just mandate that they all stay in perfect condition and fire anyone who doesn't comply" like we have a vast pool of recruits waiting to take their places, like an experienced, trained officer is something you can just discard and replace with a new recruit (who will now need to be expensively trained and still take years to become as effective as the veteran you just fired), and like it's perfectly reasonable to demand that officers not only work long shifts sitting in their cars, mandatory overtime, but they also need to use up hours of their own time in the gym for the privilege of keeping their jobs. This guy doesn't look like a trim, fit sprinter. but that doesn't mean he isn't a valuable officer or he can't do his job. Foot pursuits are like a small footnote to police work. Mostly it is patience, observation, verbal authority, even temper, etc. I have even seen officers who are valuable just because they are good communicators, they relate well with the community. As long as they aren't grossly incompetent in a fight they are worth keeping as officers. It takes different kinds of officers to make a well rounded department.

Hesitating while doing this job is the difference between living and dying. It's that simple. If cops reacted the way that people want them to, than there would be far more police deaths than there are. We are driven by instinct. If you saw what looked like someone getting a gun to shoot you, your first instinct would be to defend yourself. But people don't want to deal with reality. They just want to scream and throw tantrums and dictate to you how they think things should be, instead of how they actually are. And it's unfortunate for me to say, but I have some friends that do believe all the bullshit about how "Cops are just out to kill people." "They abuse their power" Blah blah blah. Just regurgitating the same bullshit that everyone else says, when they have never been in these positions before. Never had to make these types of choices.
