Greece is one place that I always feel at Home, there is never the feeling you are being "tolerated" as a tourist.. So many times I have sat drinking well into the night only for the bar owner to wave me away when the bill was due to be paid. If you are visiting Please try to book a family owned Taverna / Hotel, you will have a way nicer experience than a Chain Hotel. IMO.

My first holiday abroad was to Crete in 1983, on landing at Heraklion we had to walk from the plane to the terminal, such as it was. Such great memories, Crete was so undeveloped back then, hardly any TVs, only a few phone lines off the island (which you had to queue for) and very few cars. The busses were good and very cheap though, as was the food!

We are currently in Crete with the family. It has been very beautiful and warm weather for a week. The children have had enough to do: adventure, swimming, all kinds of fun and in the evenings they have eaten delicious food in taverns. The people of Crete are very hospitable and love children. This is our third trip to this island, but I think the children will always want to come again and will probably come with their own children in the future. It would be nice to come to Heraklion for a change sometime. Our two youngest sons were very excited about the flight, especially the landing in Chania. I'm sure this great video is a must for them. :) Bye Crete❤, today back to Finland! [CHQ-HEL] 🇬🇷🇫🇮

Perfect, smooth landing. I have been many times on Crete; it is my favourite European holiday island. But the sidewinds on Heraklion airport are always a thing to concur. A few times the pilot has to break off the landing because of to strong N winds from the sea or to strong S winds from the mountains, otherwise he simply would have missed the strip. And taking off in W direction will always cause a sound blast in Heraklion itself.

As a retired pilot I've landed at Crete many times. I don't know what it's like now but my observation over many years is that the actual wind crossing the threshold on RW 27 is often more that the ATC reported wind. Because of this I've some "arrivals" there since adjustments to Vref are less than they should be. If you look at the topography of the airfield you can see that when the wind is in the northwest it's accelerated as it hits the terrain. Based on this it was always one place where I'd carry an extra 5 knots on the approach above the normal add ons. Great video thanks! I see you made a comment in notes about wind additives on RW27.
@DutchPilotGirl9 ай бұрын
Absolutely, you couldn't have explained it better than what you just did. :) They recommend Vref + 10 instead of + 5 with a maximum of 15 knots.

So I'm doing my PPL training at the Herklion Aviation Academy, and they've told us students multiple times that RNW 27 is a really hard runway to land and due to it being an upslope, constant changing crosswinds and due us students being in little DA-40s (little mosquitos as the instructors call them), so we also have to deal with wake turbulence from the Commercial planes.
