Paro is a beast. OF the world’s most dangerous airports for sure. Special license required. Excellent crew.

There is no special license required. Also, it’s a challenging airport, but that doesn’t make it dangerous.
@bobboberson202411 күн бұрын
@ Maybe license was confusing. A pilot has to be certified for this airport. Most airports like this do. Like Lukla, like Kai Tak used to, Toncotin, etc.
@rtbrtb_dutchy418311 күн бұрын
@@bobboberson2024 still don’t need to be certified. You are allowed to simply practice the approach in a simulator. There is no exam. There is no certification. And if you did not have the sim session, you are allowed to bring a local pilot or navigator to help you out. I understand that people think this is a “big deal”, but it really is not. It’s pretty straight forward and any pilot has the skills to get the sim session done. Now, for instance, in Juneau Alaska, a pilot can get certified to fly in there at a lot lower weather minimums. That’s a lot harder to do. Not the regular minimums, that’s pretty straight forward. It’s the lower minimums that make it hard.
@bobboberson202411 күн бұрын
@ Sims have opened up a lot of instruction for pilots. And very true - helped familiarized strips that have needed certification. There are several that still do. But I’m sure the computer generation will negate the need at some point.

Wow again! The cool, casual competence of that pair was as breathtaking as the terrain. Bhutan neighbors Nepal to the east, so these are the "lower" Himalayas. I cannot believe that an Airliner is supposed to clip the top of a mountain range, dive into a valley, bank into a turn, barely miss the mountainside and almost taking out houses to line up at 135-150 mph on the runway is astonishing. What a beautiful runway though, the mountain walls on either side make you notice the speed far more than fields, and the spectacular cockpit view is a reward. The expressions on the two's faces told all. They saw everything, did all at the right time, but especially the pilot behind the beach-girl sunglasses looked dead serious despite her relaxed demeanor. I sure wouldn't want to run into her as a fighter pilot, she'd be formidable! I'd be more than happy to have that team in the cockpit, they could dodge cars landing downtown, then parallel park it & pay the meter!

Approach: Fly directly towards the mountain. As soon as your aircraft feels that it is getting close, turn to starboard. Follow the mountain and look for a path towards the valley above Anwar's house. When you see the small temple on the port side of the side window, this would be the time to say a little prayer to your personal deity. Once there, try not to break off the TV aerial at Salim's house. When you see the village road - do not land, this is not yet the airfield! Follow the course of the river and behind the next bend, the straight thing, that's your airstrip. Great respect for this achievement!
@SYDAirlineEnthusiast12 күн бұрын
Once you hit the airstrip, you need to flare enough to not crash, but also not float too long as it’s a short runway at high altitude. When you touchdown, you got to punch the brakes to ensure you won’t overshoot the runway.
