I know it's hard to sell a 4-engined plane these days but I would've liked to see them replace this with a 747-8i. I know a 787 is much cheaper to run but it's a lot smaller too and IIRC the 787 and 747-8i use the same engines
@katedawson85247 жыл бұрын
Good point Robbie, they both have same/similar engines. Makes a lot of sense for Qantas to get the 747-8

Kate Dawson it sure does, there's no way any 787 can replace a 747, the size difference is just too much even if it was a 787-10. I think the 787 is a good replacement for a 767, the only Boeing replacement for the 744 in my opinion would be a 748 or at the very least a 777-300
@speedbird15987 жыл бұрын
I think you guys need to understand that a lot of airlines (Including Qantas I assume) bought the -400 not for its capacity, but its incredible range. A lot of current -400 routes like BNE-LAX-JFK don't need the capacity of the -400, and as such are being replaced by the 787. The A380 is the 747s replacement for high density routes.

I noticed something about Qantas's 747s: The 747 is a plane many passengers complain about due to its age. Most airlines often keep their 747 fleet in atrocious condition, with poor IFE, seats, and cleanliness. Not once have I EVER heard anyone complain about flying Qantas's 747s. That is a testament to how well you keep your aircraft maintained.

The 787 is Not a proper replacement for a 747! No upper deck, no nose seating. The 787 though a great plane is a mid size plane. Qantas should supplement the 787 with the new 747-8i which has all the positive 747-400 attributes that Qantas passengers know and love combined with 787 tech engines that give much better fuel economy than their a380. Go on Qantas Get the 747-8i. Your facebook a380 v 747 poll proved Qantas passengers prefer the 747, with many comments wanting the 747-8i

I was disappointed to find this video is an ad for the 787; I have flown on this particular 747 (OJM) on many occasions; it was on regular Brisbane-Singapore duties a few years back (before they downgraded the service to a two-class A330.. which was really bad news because I could usually stretch the company travel policy to cover premium economy on the return red-eye but not business; so back to economy for me..) when I was travelling to there often and I always got this one.. It will be sad to see them go...
@ashtonc17 жыл бұрын
People are saying that the 787 isn't big enough and can't carry enough passengers but the truth is that we are moving toward a system where we have more smaller planes flying long haul flights instead of less larger planes. Having more smaller planes fly these routes means that airlines don't have to fill up such a large plane. This means that they can run these flights more frequently. It also means that airlines will be able to fly more direct flights from smaller airports because it isn't as hard to fill up a flight.

Ashton Cofer .
@jrheathrow20407 жыл бұрын
Ashton Cofer Yea I understand what you are saying, but there is still need for bigger aircraft to transport low frequency and high concentration of passengers also the 747 I believe is better than the A380 which is set to “replace” the 747. Additionally the 747 is still a profitable and cost effective aircraft and could make more ,only than a 787 because it carries more passengers and cruises faster and for longer also the 747 or the A380 are safer than any twin engined aircraft because you have 4 back up engines and seeing that the 747 and A380 have 4 engines they would be perived as safer aircraft, I also believe if Qantas does retire their 7474’s the mid-range seat market would be lost and they would have to operate more aircraft on certain routes which would be more costly and weirdly be more costly on the environment.
@michaelzilkowsky29366 жыл бұрын
I am no airline expert, but I have always enjoyed the argument that 787s are more fuel efficient than 747s and therefore are "the wave of the future." Well, yeah....take an airplane and reduce its size, passenger and cargo capacity, then lop off two engines.....of course it is going to be "more fuel efficient." Any long haul trucking company could increase its fuel efficiency by going to day cabs and pup trailers, too ....... On the other hand, the 747 is the 6 ounce Coke -- the perfect combination of style and substance, passenger and cargo capacity, which is to say an airplane that can generate far more than twice the revenue per flight than some new fangled POS that is only being bought so that airline CEOs can have ribbon cutting photos of themselves. The 747 is the only plane that has ever mattered and will always be the only plane that matters.

Jerome Graham-Record the reason why airlines like Singapore Airlines order the A380 is that it allows them to make premium products better my guess is that one a 747 it is harder and it is good for airport which have very expensive slots like LHR and it is better for a country like Singapore since it is a small country which means the A380 allows pilots to fly one or two flights day for Lufthansa and Korea my theory is that if they their A380 have an issue they can temporarily replace it with a 747

Its shame that 747s are slowly been replaced, 747 truly is the queen of the air, and i doubt that companies couldnt retrofit them, to make them more fuel efficient. 747 is only plane that can carry over 600 passangers (747-8 - 700) so why retiring such magnificent planes, for cheaper smaller 787 and A350's, fuel is main reason, but new fuels can be created which would allows 747 to remain in service for decades, at least 747-8 will remain for decades.

Qantas doesn't have as many long long haul flights anymore as they used to have 12 years ago. Back then, Qantas operated the route Frankfurt Sydney twice or thrice a week in a 744 with a 5 hour refuelling stopover in Singapore (QF6 back then and QF5 return). Now they only have a direct flight Frankfurt Dubai operated by emirates. And even any of the US bound routes are a lot shorter. Fact is Qantas just doesn't have the need for that many that big long haul planes. Heathrow Dubai is one of the only, if not the only connection that qantas flies themselves in Europe and I'm sure even that is never full. And if we look back again, 12 years ago, routes the length of Frankfurt Dubai were operated by 767 back then already. Every second an aircraft stays on the ground costs you money, so you rather get smaller aircraft and should the need rise you fly more often than have a bigger aircraft and it not being even half full flying twice a week (2005 the FRA SYD wasn't even half full... basically me and my parents could each occupy a for seat row to get some z's without disturbing anyone on the plane)
