this is St. Maarten in Caribbean, it has the smallest runway in the world where a boeing lands. i was on the beach at that time with tons of tourist over there enjoying and we witnessed these two boeing planes they actually came too close and KLM aborted its landing

As Robert said. It's a standard procedure that happens at busy airports. Might make the average person a little nervous though. Calling the airport scary is like calling JFK and O'hare scary in the US or Heathrow scary in England. For those that don't know, Sint Maarten's airport is the second busiest airport in the Caribbean region with peak period movements of landing/take-off every 1-2 minutes.

Have you noticed that Corsair has revved up his engines while making a U-turn to rush for take off? Its because Corsair pilots already saw KLM coming in for a landing. Pilots of both planes already saw each other from a distance, the question is: Who was given clearance by ATC first? KLM to land or Corsair to take off? With only one runway for take off & landing, whoever was cleared first should have priority access to the runway while the other should stand by for clearance.

I remember once in Guatemala city, a 4 prop passenger plane was coming in for a landing. As it approached, an air force fighter took off in the opposite direction, forcing the propeller plane to abort.

Being a commercial pilot my self, there's no way that the pilots could've turned around and done a 180 on the runway with out the Tower, and respecting Departure controller giving the go ahead.

No need to blame ATC, the minimums be off time after time, especially with approaching aircraft throttling its knots. Similar incident happened at MWCR, when a Cayman Boeing 733 aborted its landing while on finals, and a United Boeing 738 aborting its takeoff, due to minimums error.
@abeamarra

The situation is like a first-come-first-serve basis. Whichever of the two airline (KLM or Corsair) was given clearance by ATC should have priority access to the runway. KLM was on final approach while Corsair was taking off. There's definitely a failure in coordination by the ATC on which of the two were given clearance first.

Given that perhaps Corsiar has prior clearance to take off before KLM lands, my understanding is that whoever has prior clearance from ATC goes first, and whoever follows, will stand by. Even though KLM was perhaps miles away on his final approach, ATC should not have given him clearance until Corsair has cleared the runway.

in the canary islands, teneriffe (i forgot how to spell it) 2 747's collided on the runway. PANAM couldn't find the exit off the runway and klm started to take off, the FO stopped the capt . The capt got departure clearance and started to take off. This still is not a takeoff clearance, but he took off anyways. the FO was not about to stop the capt again so his silence and the captains arrogance cost over 500 lives when the klm plane slammed into the panam 747 that was still on the runway

This is a totally normal thing, ATC oviously expected the Corsair to have taken off before the KLM passed desision height, but for whatever reason it wasn't, and the KLM, as proceedure, aborted the landing. I've seen it happen twice in the last year at my local airport, which is far from busy, and that was only on about 20 occasions I was up there.

August is the slow season. High season starts from mid-november and continues until end of april. if you come in august however, you will see all different sizes of airplanes. juliana airport handles from one of the smallest (cessna 152) to one of the biggest (boeing 747-400) on any given day.

2) And btw, big plane's like 747's have to make backtrack on the runway of st Martin (st Maarten) because the room, it can't vacant the runway on that point. It seems that the KLM 747 whas a little earlyer than expect, so the only right thing was too abort the landing of the KLM plane and i'm sure there was a good communication between both aircraft and ATC. This things happens every day all over the world.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wake turbulence is only produced when an aircraft is generating lift(ie its airborne). Had the KLM had room to land, it would not have flown through any wake of the Corsair as the aircraft was still moving down the runway and not generating lift. For the KLM to encounter wake turbulence it would have had to land and take off again behind the Corsair.

To be fair to the Corsair, they were already committed and had nowhere to go once given the go ahead to taxi. 747s have to taxi on the runway and turn at the end and there's no slipway for them to exit to. The only option was to turn round and get out ASAP which they did.

that is why the klm made the right turn. That procedure is put there to prevent stupidity from happening. There is always a danger in every activity, and as ATC there is an amout of traffic that has to land and has to takeoff. ATC did the right thing here, and I am happy to be an ATC myself
@stalwart911
@stalwart911 16 жыл бұрын
Nothing unusual though,, seen it happening before more frequently on smaller jets. No crew can take the runway without clearance (unless they are prepared for serious implications). Corsair was cleared to takeoff and they were probably taxing too slowly and delayed the takeoff till that time KLM was already too close. Can happen with small ATC. The command was probably like "KLM XX- follow published missed approach procedure, traffic on runway"

2 of 2 When a plane is cleared for final approach, it is not yet cleared to land. so the pilot is always ready to go around until cleared to land. More likely the KLM pilot was notified since a while the rwy was currently busy and fully ready for go around. So, as impressive this video can be, we cannot say just from what we see that there was a fault from anyone. Everything depends about things we don't know: what where the ATC-Aircraft exchanges before what wa see here.
@abeamarra
@abeamarra 16 жыл бұрын
That's what I've been saying since I posted my comments here. When one plane is cleared for take off or landing, the other one to follow should standby for clearance by the ATC. I came to know lately that there are ATCs who make a 15 second separation between airplanes. that's why perhaps KLM did not dare take that risk and went on for another round. This airport must be under Category 2, meaning, they do not conform with US standards in security and safety in airports and aircraft.

The KLM pilot must be very mad at the air traffic controller for allowing the Corsiar take off first when his plane is already on final approach to the runway. Lack of coordination or negligence of the air traffic controller might have been the cause.

The Corsair plane was already cleared for takeoff its white anti-collision and outbd/inbd landing lights were on when it was on the turning bay. It couldn't just wait for the KLM to land because there wouldn't be sufficent wing clearance. Still, amazing to see both beasts in action at SXM! Coming from someone who likes to pretend he's actually a pilot.

bottom line- pilots always brief an approach. From initial approach to intermediate, final approach, to missed approach procedures. Including the turn off and expected taxi route on the ground. I've gone around cause the runway wasnt in sight at minimums or there was traffic on the runway. It could have been the klm pilot made the decision or he was told by the tower to go around; either way an excellent video. BTW that beach is a topless beach. if he took off without clearance trust me we would have heard abt it. its the towers fault for allowing him onto the active before realising that the aircraft on finals was quite close in. controler did not think far ahead enough or he miss judged how fast the a/c on finals would be coming in. happens quite frequantly and handled as expected.

This is a very normal and frequent procedure near busy airports around the globe. A greater tailwind than expected perhaps got the planes a bit more closer than expected in which case the pilot or the ATC advised a "go-around" . Pretty normal. It would have been not so normal if the plane had attempted to land behind the other jet!!

Probably because the Corsair took longer than expected, and the KLM was a bit early than expected (ATC probably had everything set fine until the KLM came up a bit early). It's just a good thing he was waived off before the minimums.

@BigDaddyLicious
@BigDaddyLicious 17 жыл бұрын
Ur right, cause the problem started since the Corsair got permission 2 enter the RWY... Thats why It had 2 clear the runway ASAP, If She had stayed over at the beginning off the RWY, her wing still streches on the RWY... So in that Point, Takeoff ASAP was only thing she could do to CLR the RWY. Error here was miscalculation by the tower in the distance of the KLM approaching the field!

you wanna know why the corsair didn't hold short ? because there is no taxi way at this end of the runway in st. maarten. there is only one small patch of concrete ground for planes like 747 to make negotiate turns. so for large planes like 747s, part of its body will still stick out in the runway when it is on that small patch of ground, so they have no choice but get onto the runway and take off.

@atworkguy It happens all the time around the world. I would wager a bet that a go-around due to traffic on the runway happens at least once a day at every major airport. So you are right, it does not happen all the time from your perspective in Tower XYZ, but generally it happens all the time. I am a frequent flyer and I have been in many go-arounds as a passenger.

@Flauwer I agree. planeboy737 is saying that go arounds are normal, but at St. Maarten there is a specific situation, where you have a mountain after end of runway, and all planes have to bank right after take off, and this was quite tricky situation, because a plane which made go around, also turned right, so they were really close, and it was not a "normal" go around, but pretty dangerous one.

While not unusal, it would have been best for the corsair 747-400 to hold short of the runway...as a large aircraft such as the 747 requires some time to align(as you could see it looked to be having some trouble getting into position). Really wasnt a saftey risk, these jets have a ton of power, setting for full power and "going around" isnt a problem, some people posting here should see some of those strong crosswind landings(you'll piss your pants)

looks like just a simple timing conflict to me, happens all the time in the industry... the KLM was probably expecting to land behind the taking off corsair, but things didn't go so quickly, so he had to go around: a costly inconvenience, but nothing out of the ordinary.. of course controllers are encouraged to minimize these avoidable go-arounds as they are costly for the airline.

To operate an aircraft to a obstructed area like that there are certain performance parameters which the aircraft should be capable of. For an example B 747 should be tested and should have performance charts for the specific verticle speed when operating in 3 engines..If that verticle speed is less than the reqired ODP( Obstcle Departure Procedure) simply the aircraft can't operate in that airfield.
