A Boeing 737 cockpit view of the approach and landing into the Tegucigalpa airport located in Honduras. Tegucigalpa (TGU) is considered by many to be one of the world's most dangerous airports due to; the steep approach required; elevation; short, sloping runway and high terrain in very close proximity.

Indeed. I wonder what the height above terrain would be (lowest) point for a precision instrument approach and how much extra height there'd be if it were a non-precision approach (if promulgated). Bugger all, I would guess.

By the sound of the trim wheel, this is a 737. After several decades, never realized how much trim was needed when power was reduced, or how much easier pitch control one wanted. Great video, and looks like the runway is a bit longer now, still challenging, and turns and altitudes are still probably based on this house, that house, that pool, etc. Watch a 757 landing here, the largest airplane that can safely get in. Thanks for the post.

If they have been burning brush the airport can get closed down for lack of visibility . Thanks American Airlines for all the strict training . There are a handful of guys licensed to land here.

Good memories. The plane has to descend fast enough and in a corkscrew pattern that your gut remains somewhere in the clouds by the time the plane lands. A week after I left Tegucigalpa, a plane went right off the runway. There's a pretty substantial drop at the end.

Also, it is not normal but sometime necessary to straighten out at the last second. If you are landing on a short runway, you want to land as soon as possible, at the beginning of the run way with no excess speed to bleed off. So speed and height are important at any short runway. Hope this helps. Space is limited here. Good Luck. Your info, I have been flying for over 40yrs and have thousands of hours. Happy Flying to you and stay safe.

This is a crazy landing to experience as a passenger because you are flying directly over houses and hills as you make a 180 degree turn to land on the runway. In 2009 they lengthened the runway by removing part of the sandy hill that you see them fly over to make it somewhat easier to land, but it is still amazing to see the precision required to make a good landing.

@idiotfacehead That would be an airstrip in Tibet that brings in hikers bound for Mount Everest. It is 10,000 feet high so there is a sharp decrease in control. Also the runway is very short. It is a no 'call off' landing which means you can't do a go around if you blow it the first time. And yes, there have been numerous crashes as you might expect. I think pilots have to land with a pilot guide there 5 times before being allowed to land solo. It is DANGEROUS.

I've driven trucks with trailers, "tow bar" tandem vehicles, and buses through Honduras 8 times. It has the worst roads I've ever seen, except for southern Mexico (which has rebuilt its roads to facilitate troop movements to suppress the indigenous peoples' uprising.) Honduras has brake smoking looooong downhills, 1st gear upgrades, and we hit a portion of road one time that had invisible "whoop de doos", I was temporarily airborne in my bus along with everything on the dashboard, then BAM we hit something equivalent to a street curb that destroyed both front shocks on the bus, just tore them off of their mountings. It is really a sad place, awful succession of military governments, death squads, it is truly the saddest country I've been to out of 10 nations in Latin America I have visited. It is a nation without any hope for a better future, and Hurricane Mitch (I think that's the right one) completely submerged and devastated the country in about 2006, it did 40 BILLION dollars in damage, which is considerable when you realize there's little of value to damage in the first place. There are literally Millions of Acres of fallow land, but the peasants aren't allowed to plant a single seed, forcing them into near starvation and having to BUY any foodstuffs. Not as bad as Haiti, but then again NOTHING is as bad or sad as Haiti. God bless these long suffering people.

This over two hour 9/11 account.. is not like all of the other footage from that day.. 'Tuesday Morning in September': It is what 9/11 was to many, outside the first ring at Ground Zero. It is in reverence to those who perished, and respectful to those who lost their loved ones on that paradigm shifting tragic day. It is the retrospection that is needed for our time.

"No fun" because this is a totally manual and visual approach. Fly over the airport at about 9000, and make a left spiral following a specific published Jepp chart, and visuallly, "be over this house with a pool at this altitude/DME", "cross this road..." etc. A 737 will fall out of the sky if you cut the power at 200 feet, dude. Their approach was perfect, landing and roll out. You don't want to go over the end of the runway.
@markpeterson3220
@markpeterson3220 11 жыл бұрын
The approach angle looks so high my insides felt like the engine should have been cut at 200 feet! I can only guess that they fly on the lower edge of their approach safety speed so that the last little dip down for the runway brings the speed up to a still reasonable ( not to high) figure. He certainly planted down nicely. The pilots last comment.."Thats not fun..I don't like this one!.."
@warc

Actually they have extended the runway at this airport since this video has been made so that now pilots don't have to be as precise as to where they put the aircraft down on the runway. With that the said the decent is still tricky with the elevation and the visual turn the pilot has to make when lining up the aircraft with the runway immediately before landing. There is very small room for error.

I can answer your question about commercial pilot salaries. When you first start out, you work with small commuter lines as a First Officer making above minimum wage. You work ten to twelve hours a day, and you are only paid for the time that you are in the air. Everything else that you do is on your time. It will take you at least five to ten years to work your way up to a major carrier. And then you will still fly short hauls for their commuter subsidiary.

This is AWESOME footage but something tells me this is not a 737 but a smaller plane... or the footage is speeded up... I dont think large planes respond so rapidly to pilot inputs... they change direction more slowly and deliberately.... its the smaller planes that float down like a leaf responding to every twitch of the controls. Any pilots out there to correct me if I am wrong ??? Thx.

Jesus fucking Christ. That was like watching a suspense flick. You just kept anticipating the runway after each turn he made because they were so close to the ground - and you see a white strip out in the horizon thinking that might be it. Only to see the short runway right in front of them at a still relatively high altitude. I wouldn't risk my career flying into that airport - even if the doubled my salary.

@happyinthelord there are plenty of mountain airports all over the world.. as long as approach procedures are followed, its no more dangerous than any other airport.. in fact, because the terrain is so difficult, pilots wont be nearly as complacent as they will in "flatland" airports. I'm quite sure there's also an overshoot/go around procedure in the event that a landing cant be made. And if there's no ILS, simply close the airport at sunset..
@moonscoasttocoast

@MynistaTv At the end of the one minute leg, you do a procedure turn back on a heading of 063 back toward the 198 radial, but this time, you will be flying inbound toward it. Once the 198 radial starts to come into range, execute a left turn onto heading 018 degrees and descend to 6700 feet. You should be at 6700 feet by five miles from the Missed Approach Point. Then you have the final approach. They're not "lost" at all in this video, you just make a series of turns to clear terrain/line up.

Some of the noises you hear are the gear being lowered. The wooshing noise is the elevator trim. This is mostly automated on the 757 during flight. The callouts (wasn't listening to it very loud..) may have been TERRAIN etc this would be the EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System) altitude call outs ie 500, 50,40, etc would be the radio altimeter... its more accurate than the barometric altitude.. great finals and landing though with the circumstances..
@putman201
@putman201 13 жыл бұрын
@lonzenator It is the trim for the aircraft. As the aircraft configuration changes (flaps, gear down) and the speed changes, the aircrafts attitude (nose up or down ) changes. the trim helps to relieve some of the backrpessure so that instead of constantly trying to pull the nose up, the nose up attitude required for flight due to the slow speed at that stage is easier to control. You can hear the gear go down and the chime is a notification that they have descended through an altitude

I been on planes flying into this airport, I must agree with the pilot (or maybe co-pilot) I do not like this airport either. @robinbrannon1 Actually what caused that flight to go off the runway was having a pilot that ignored air traffic control telling him not to even try touching down b/c he missed the mark and to go try again. How do I know this? I've flown in and out of Tegu many times, and I asked people that we know down there, as well as people at the airport, what caused it, and they all said the same thing...The pilot refusing to acknowledge that he missed the mark and he couldn't stop the plane in time.

Our airline has our own tailored approach for this airport which is very similar to the RNP approach (we are not RNAV-RNP approved) but only the captain has to hand fly the aircraft while the first officer calls out the altitudes, heading, and airspeed and we have a 3rd person in the jump seat for any radio operation and any additional resource/monitoring. It is a pain in the ass to make an approach here. I have been there and done that.

@Angryrnmedic There could not possibly be a procedure to land on rwy 2 at night. They made a complete 180+deg circle to land while descending in mountainous terrain, in very close proximity to a mountain ridge, no visual clues at night, at jet class vrefs. I wonder why they couldn't have just done a straight-in approach from the south and just popped over that ridge and dropped right in. Flying this terrain at night vfr has killed several bands and a few air ambulances.

@general232 It's scrawled on the back of a napkin and kept stuffed in the POH under Emergency Op's. You fly thru a break in the mountain ridge, take a 30 deg rt dogleg over a plateau, fly straight for the ridge line while descending to 1500ft, look for the crop circle, make a continuous 120 degree left turn, missing the ridge line while dropping your gear and flaps, following the dirt road to the pink roof tops. The white patch is your MAP - down in 5 sec. or get the hell out of there

@scvs2, in the FSX yes, but in the real life could be or it is quite impossible, the Tocontin's runway is just 2,163 m long at 1004 m sea level elevation. The shortest runways registered for 747 are Durban International Airport (2,439 m at 9 m elevation) and Newcastle Airport (2,329 at 81 m). The runaway of Toncontin is not enough and the thinner air at its elevation is an obstacle for the lift of so big airplane.

VOR DME RWY 20 Circle to Land RWY 02 is the approach used here. AT DME 5.0 (24 seconds) turn to a heading to enter left downwind for RWY 02, descend from 6000' to 4500' MSL. (1:19) downwind to base turn with the ranger tower in sight (2:05) alt should also be 3900' MSL, sink rate no greater than 1000 fpm. Then base to final using the freeway overpass (2:35). The entire approach the FO is calling out sink rates and speeds. Oh ya.... there is a prohibited area directly east of the airport, lol.

The approach to RWY 20 appears no better - you can find approach plates online Comments for the airport include: "Obstructions to visibility average 27 days per month" (gee, wouldn't this be fun in below V.F.R. conditions) "High terrain in all quadrants" (really, I hadn't noticed all the mountains!) "During the rainy season, touchdown zone is extremely slippery when wet" (just to add an extra degree of difficulty, you understand)

As far as I know, no airport turns it's runway light on during the day on VFR, unless ceiling and visibility get to a certain low level. And no, this is a VOR approach, which is not authorized at night. By the way, the little hill on the right side near the runway is no longer there, and the runway is longer now.

at least in TGU pilots KNOW where are they going to land; as passenger it is simply frightening. I remember that from my seat i could see the interior of a house in the hills parallel to the runway and there was this guy watching TV like nothing. And just wait for the take-off, it is as frightening as the landing...

If coming down through all those mountain passes isn't enough, the first view of the runway on the left is just plain scary. When I first saw the runway, I thought there was no way the plane could land and stop quickly enough in that little space. That is a scary landing. No wonder one of the crew said "That's not fun". I can only imagine.

@mohammeddavis in other words when a pilot lands a plane with no help from instruments or ground equipment the pilot does it visually the air traffic control will put you into a heading with the airport straight ahead usually over 15 miles and the pilot manually lines up the plane with the runway and has to stay on the glide slope. visually with no equipment

@lonzenator That wold be the trim wheel. It auto adjusts according to wind speed, plane speed, etc to keep the plane flying straight, and level, and adjust for the added weight of people and cargo. There's also a manual wheel inside the cockpit for manual adjustment. That is what you're hearing clicking.

I heard that you have to land between the two markers and if you don't then you have to go back around and try again. They say if you have to go around, you might as well land at another airport. The go around is what caused the fatal flight to go off the end and kill 96 people. Oh and I'm sure the "warning terrain" signal is going off constantly!!!

@largeeyes runway was only lengthened about 1,000 feet, and the hill at the start of the runway has been smoothed out (all the white space). So yes, a little less scary than ten years ago, but still a difficult approach. The mountains at the other end of the valley make for a steep climb and challenging take-off, too.

"A Boeing 737 cockpit view of the approach and landing into the Tegucigalpa airport located in Honduras. Tegucigalpa (TGU) is considered by many to be one of the world's most dangerous airports due to; the steep approach required; elevation; short, sloping runway and high terrain in very close proximity." So it is.

This kind of landing procedure we call cubanien hammer eight approach i.e. from downwind to final everything must work and fit homogen. Otherwise you loose ....... plane, pax or license :-) This is real flying an aircraft ......... or to say: Here is the boss cooking by himself ....... everything is handmade :-) and ........ finaky makes a lot of fun!!!!!!!

The background noise that you hear are the trim wheels spinning. Whenever the pilot actuates the electronic trim switch on the yoke, it phyically turns the trim wheel (which, in case of an electronic trim failure, they can manually turn). That's the hissing or maraccas sound that you hear. I almost wonder if the grunting at the end is one of them manually turning the wheel.

@mapduke04 Hardly "sick." Not terribly tricky other than the perception of the rising landscape. The twists and turns are reminiscent of D.C. National. And if you've ever flown into Lindbergh, San Diego, the latter gives you the same terrain phenomenon...short final is BELOW the top deck of an adjacent parking garage.

@TheCannonofMohammed FAA and OSHA are NATIONAL, meaning within the United States, outside from that only country they don't have any right to do anything! got it? good! If it's so impossible or hard to do, the pilots/airline have the right to say "i won't go there", well, do it! but you muslims are known for risky piloting! right?

@TonyTHEponyCONS hmmm, No! well, there are several points of view, the topographical one, shows that there are 6 continents, America, Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa and Antarctica... but in some US schools they teach, that there's N America, South America, Central with the Caribbean Sea, Africa, Not Oceania but Australia, and also they talk about part of Asia as Middle East...
