They measure holes for all sorts of things....concentricity, edge distance, perpendicularity, not to mention size (interference fit....or close tolerance and so forth). Like they told us, "you aren't adding material back into the hole as you run the drill bit through it a second time." And the ever popular, "The customer is buying a new product, not a repaired one." @brodieboy33 жыл бұрын
Why do you 'need' A single seater? Having the 2nd seat means that every plane has the option for a second operator if the mission calls for it .. and lots of A2G missions do as evidenced by the Strike Eagle. There's also a benefit to having a few command/control, navigation, & communication guys and some planes may get.optimized for EW operations by adding Growler jamming pods. I also see UCAVs/ loyal wingmen becoming a bigger part of most every mission. EXs accompanied by stealthy ucavs will likely become the norm for 1st day strikes and taking out enemy air defenses where you don't want to risk losing pilots and even stealthy F35s will become more vulnerable and they don't have sufficient on-board fire power by themselves to take on enemy fighters reacting to the initial attacks. F35s will, however, be valuable as they silently lay in wait along side EXs to attack any fighters that do respond .. at which point more EXs loaded up with cruise missiles and other A2G weapons can proceed further forward to take and command & control, air base, infrastructure & enemy troop concentration targets.

A huge difference is Northrop was trying to sell to the USAF an aircraft it didn't want (the Air Force was happy with the F16, they didn't really care too much about the costs increases over the years). On the other hand, the Air Force is not completely happy with the cost (procurement & maintenance) vs. performance of the F35A, plus once we have enough stealth aircraft needed to suppress the air defense and dominate the airspace, stealth requirement is no longer critical for most missions.

Fairchild Aircraft is now defunct. It's been taken over by Elbit Systems. I'm not sure they're interested.

@@sid426_ has the the B52 been in continuous production for over 50 years? It is up to each individual to express an opinion and I have expressed mine, you don't have to agree.

@@michaelsalt4565 being in production doesn't always mean production of whole new airframes. I meant to say that first of all, the B-52 has an estimated life Span of 100 years. And yes it's parts are still in production, even all of its aluminium body panels for the fuselage which need to be replaced. Moreover, new retrofit programs are being run specifically for the aircraft to modernise it as per the time requires it to. Therefore, although it's not in series production, it is in production in some way.

I'm glad the USAF is purchasing the F15EX. I suspect its going to be a sucsess and they will replace all the existing F-15's with the EX. I certainly hope they do. Imo we need a mix of stealth fighters and fast, reliable fighters like the EX which can carry a variety of weapons the F35 and F22 cannot.
